Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala Milan,
    Conductor: Tullio Serafin
    Chorus master: Norberto Mola
Recorded: 12-27.VII.1957, Teatro alla Scala, Milan.
    Libretto:
    TOSCA
    Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore,
non feci mai male ad anima viva!
    Con man furtiva
    quante miserie conobbi, aiutai.
    Sempre con fé sincera,
    la mia preghiera
    ai santi tabernacoli sali.
    Sempre con fé sincera
    diedi fiori agli altar.
    Nell'ora del dolore perché,
    perché, Signore, perché
    me ne rimuneri cosi?
    Diedi gioielli
    della Madonna al manto,
e diedi il canto agli astri,
al ciel, che ne ridean più belli.
    Nell'ora del dolore perché,
    perché, Signor,
    perché me ne rimuneri cosi?
    English translation:
    TOSCA
I lived for ar t, I lived for love:
never did I harm a living creature!
    Whatever misfortunes I encountered
I sought with secret hand to succour.
    Ever in pure faith,
    my prayers rose
    in the holy chapels.
    Ever in pure faith,
I brought flowers to the altars.
In this hour of pain, why,
    why, oh Lord, why
    dost Thou repay me thus?
    Jewels I brought
    for the Madonna's mantle,
and songs for the stars in heaven
that they shone forth with greater radiance.
In this hour of distress, why,
    why, oh Lord,
why dost Thou repay me thus?

This is magnificent, but I think her 1951 live recording is even better.

THE INFORMATION GIVEN HERE IS MISTAKEN, THERE IS NO RECORDING OF TOSCA MADE BY CALLAS IN 1957. CALLAS recorded Tosca in 1951, under De Sabata, with Di Stefano and Gobbi, and in 1964, under Prêtre with Bergonzi and Gobbi, from which this "vissi d'arte" was taken. In 1957 her voice was in great shape, though in some recordings one hears the fatigue of it, given the incredible demands she imposed upon her voice. HERE IS THE LIST OF IT, in chronological order: Barbiere recording, Sonnanbula recording, Bollena at La Scala, Ifigenia at La Scala, Lucia in concert form at Rome, Sonnambula in Köhln, Turandot recording, Manon Lescaut recording, concert at Herodes Atticus (Trovatore, Forza, Isolde, Lucia, Ophelia) Sonnambula in Edinburgh, Medea recording, Dallas concert, (Entfürung, Puritani, Macbeth, Traviata, Bollena), Ballo in maschera at La Scala, ....THAT WAS HER SEASON 1957.
