Thank you for posting what an incredible singer exemplary diction, tone and the emotional sincerity with which she sings. What a wonderful human being she had to have been. How fortunate we are to have recordings like this to revisit her generosity and genius.
We are the music makers. The first and last words. The closing phrase sung by this choir is simply beautiful. I'm saddened to learn though, that only 2 years after this performance Lorraine died. Rest in peace Lorraine - music maker -thank you.
Broke my heart to learn that Lorraine had died of breast cancer - what a beautiful tribute to her this recording is.'A singer who sings no more'- so appropriate.
This 2004 Prom was my introduction to the incomparable art of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who was taken from us far too soon. Quite aside from the beauty of the voice, she had a remarkable gift for communication and made the art of singing as natural as speaking. She was also a superb actress. I treasure every single one of her performances now captured for posterity, and wish only that I had seen her at least once live.
I came so close to seeing her live. Not sure what year (2004? 2005? 2006?) she was scheduled to perform at the Kennedy Center. She canceled days before the concert. I'm sure it was because of the cancer. It breaks my heart that such a wonderful singer left us so early. She was a remarkable artist.
I haven't listened to/watched this for a while - more fool me. It fills me with happiness and sadness simultaneously - exquisite music, a consummate professional, how desperately sad that we have that voice and passion no more. RIP LHL
Love it. Love the way the chorus stretches out the last note. The Artist is set apart - for sure our beloved EDU was - who himself is a "light which shall not depart" till British Music is revived and returns to its expressive roots: Byrd, Purcell and Elgar.
Hello: I'm going through a mad Elgar passion right now and would love, love, to see and listen to the first part of this performance. Thank you Tony Sayer for posting this part but please (Please!) do not forget to post first part of this performance/
Sarah Walker yes, I too noticed that. How wonderful to see, as well as hear her. She so obviously knows what she is singing (not always so, even amongst those singing in their native language!), and is enjoying the act of singing itself! Brava, Lorraine; we miss you . . .
I find this video very moving for several reasons: above all, the music - Elgar at his best. especially near the end, when he quotes from "Dream of Gerontius": Lorraine Hunt Lieberson: a great singer but sadly I never saw her perform: the BBC Symphony Chorus; several choristers in this video, are people I know personally; and Leonard Slatkin, proof that you can be Anerican AND a great interpreter of the music of Elgar.
If you want part one its at this location. It has a short Interview with Lorraine:) There is a short bit missing of the end but thats all i've got. Enjoy thanks. czcams.com/video/EixX7n3QAjg/video.html
It will have to wait a little while as yet as its on a broken hard drive on the one part of that, and a damaged DVD the other however I'll do my best patch it all together;!.
Thanks. It would be a very meritorious achievement because it would be the only filmed performance of this overwhelming but unfortunately rarely performed piece on YT!

One day, after the passing of much time, I will be able to listen to this without tears in my eyes. Miss you so Lorraine.
My God, She herself was music supernatural a mystic of sorts in short informed by the celestial, universal and timeless.
A singer who sings no more.....such a great artist.

Yes I agree she was an outstanding singer, all to rare these days. It's great to have this recording of her art in such good sound.

One of my favorite recordings of Lorraine. Mesmerizing.
What an angelic voice. What a beautiful voice.
A truly uplifting but heartbreaking, precious memento of a beautiful lost angel to match Janet Baker. Thank you so much for sharing this unique jewel.
Beautiful Lorraine! Love her voice! We miss her!

Don't forget Tallis and Britten

How do you describe singing of this quality? Actually you can't, just listen and your ears tell the whole story.
