@@MrCastIron I bet you are one of a few people that understands my concern for what is going to happen to my cast iron after I'm gone. I like the old stuff a lot because it's old. I've had gatemarked stuff and those don't appeal to me but, the pretty things I know were made before I was born (1954) hold a place in my heart. The stuff you post gives me hope there will be people that appreciate cast iron in the future.

@@MrCastIron It's the people that try and fail, not due to lack of effort on their part, they work at it much harder than I do but, they fail due to the advice they're given. There's all kinds of advice on how to get a coal black and shiny pan if you want to look at it and use it occasionally. There are a lot of new people that want to use cast iron. It is not hard but, very few people will teach the basics. You're about the best, we don't always agree 100% but, you get a lot of people off to a start where few of them will fail and quit.

When I got my first Lodge a few months back, I binged on 'how to' videos. I heard lots of different techniques on everything cast iron. I was lucky enough to end up in the master class and here I am.
I light wash my cast iron with little or no soap, basically the soap that is left in the sponge, throw it back on the heat to remove any water then season it again every time.

I do wash CI once a week or when it needs it. Although, for omelets, eggs, vegetables etc., anything that is cooked on low heat, I don't wash them, only wipe bits of food out. If something has a flavor I don't want in my eggs/veggies, I will rinse the pan, other than that, the flavors are mixed and add a nice touch to eggs and veggies. Same with meat pan. The egg and the meat pan are used every day, twice a day sometimes. The egg pan is slick, shiny and cooks like a well seasoned pan. The meat pan gets sticky after awhile and is rinsed a couple times a week usually.
This is what I do, but each to their own as always:)

I suppose the soap thing comes from the days of lye soap, and I can see how that would be hard on iron, but I don't think that most dish soaps today would do much to hurt it.

It helps me to work with cast iron knowing cast iron is porous. It doesn't seem as bad now as it was a few decades ago but, dishwashing liquid used to have a lot of fragrance in it. I'm not sure I'd get a blind taste right but, I think I've tasted that fragrance before from cast iron. My habit is to wash my other dishes first, put a little tired dishwater in my pan, put it on a burner to heat it some, scrape around with a metal spatula and clean the pan with a stainless steel scouring pad and a dishrag. Rinse it well and heat it up to get the water out of those pores. The only seasoning I have left is what I don't scrape or scour out and that is plenty. I don't keep oil on my pans and they aren't coal black. I admit they don't look as good as a oiled up, black pan but, I can wipe them out with a dry dishtowel before I cook in them so I don't eat dust and dirt. I have a lot of stuff, some sits unused for weeks, I never have rust.

I don't like to see new people putting in a lot of time and effort, end up failing and giving up on cast iron. I probably spend more time looking at my cast iron than I do cleaning it. If people would look at their websites, Lodge and a bunch of the newish artisan cast iron producers say it is ok to use a mild soap like Dawn.
I'm pretty sure most of the automatic dishwashing soaps and pods have caustic in them. Which is also why you shouldn't put anything aluminium in them, like Al pots or pans with aluminium handles etc. They can come out pretty discolored, and caustic slowly eats aluminium.

No one can argue - DO NOT SOAK your cast iron unless you want to see how fast rust can attack your wonderful skillet! So wash it, sure, but then put it on the heat again immediately so that all that moisture evaporates quickly.

If your cast iron pan is seasoned correctly you will never have to wash your pan. All you have to do is wipe it with a paper towel and put it away...when you wash a pan with water, contrary to popular belief, it's not the dish soap that becomes the problem...dish soap is actually helpful because it has water softeners in it...its the water itself because most kitchen faucets are plumbed with hard water regardless if there is a water softener in the house...the residue from hard water then makes the pan stick and the more you wash and reseason the pan just compounds the problem
