    ‘If we’re getting to the point where you’re asking questions I don’t understand, something has happened’ is such a great line, I hope I live long enough to use it someday.

      @@eomoran true, I could see this line just used as banter between friends though, and I think it fits perfectly to what Lee said

      I’ve never been clear on this line. The intended meaning is: you couldn’t ask a question complex enough that I wouldn’t understand it? But what if Lee (or someone) asked a nonsensical question- which Miles wouldn’t understand? Or was the original meaning that ‘something would have happened’ to make Lee ask even less coherent questions?

    As a veteran [American] hitchhiker (in my youth), I line up with Lee on Jo's story. It's better if you have a sign. Many people who picked me up said they liked the fact that I had gone to the trouble of making a sign. "ATLANTA" in red-white-and-blue got me picked up in an almost impossible place for anyone to stop. "Nice sign!" said the driver. Another sign for EAST COAST got me a ride though the driver said, "I'm not going that way, but I'll take you to a truck stop to get a ride with a long-haul driver."

    • @thomasyates3078
      @thomasyates3078 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah, hitching in the UK was different. Most people's car trips are rarely more than 20 miles. Hitching is nearly always lots of short rides. The only time I've ever hitched with a sign in the UK is leaving festivals when there's long lines of people hitching, so everyone has a sign, and people pick you up if they're headed to the same town. The route I used to hitch 3 or 4 times a week in the 90s was 26 miles and would usually take 4 or 5 rides.

    • @montyvierra2678
      @montyvierra2678 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@thomasyates3078 Thanks! I should've specified "American" in my comment. I've added that now. Also, I'd forgotten about hitching in Europe. When I hitched from Frankfurt-am-Main to Copenhagen and across Sweden (and back) I didn't use signs at all. (Paid for the ferry rides, though!)

    • @thomasyates3078
      @thomasyates3078 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@montyvierra2678 It's kind of interesting, because I can totally see why you'd need a sign in the US (I've been here 11 years now). I hitched in Australia in the late 90's, but no sign was needed, as there are much fewer highways than the US even though they're both huge countries. I miss hitching. I think it's kind of sad no one does it anymore. Especially as I have a car now, but never see anyone hitching to pay forward all those rides kind strangers gave me in my youth.

    The first story is really weird. Hitching from London to Hastings in only four rides in the early 70s is just humdrum everyday stuff. The thing that would have made it weird would have been if Jo had invited the farmer in, which Paul seems to think would have been normal.

      I agree. He is too quick. Sometimes... in fact... most of the time... he should stop to think "is this 'joke' tedious?" Quality over quantity. Unfortunately... Macks confidence outweighs his charisma. Ya don't see Brydon or Mitchell or Bob shouting over the audience because they're desperate to get a joke in before someone else thinks of it.
