The story is the polar opposite of this, but still has a lot of misunderstandings that make it funny-a high school boy has such a frightening face that everyone around him assumes the worst of him, but he actually has a heart of gold. Ex: He accidentally gets into a gang war while trying to return the opposing gang leader’s lost wallet.

I mean, that's just real though, literally me. If you kept being bullied in the past by people pretending to be nice and complimenting you, to then laugh and making fun of you for believing that anyone would actually think that, especially if they pretend they want to be your friend to then go and bully you after, you start to think that any kind gesture or compliment or attempt to be friends is a scheme to bully and humiliate you, and you won't fall for it anymore so you really just put up these walls around you that won't ever come down, thinking that no one's ever nice to you for real, it's only because they're making fun of you, so no matter what they say "no, I actually mean it" they're still lying trying not to get caught so they can still humiliate and make fun of you, so you don't ever believe what anyone says regarding being nice to you. So I get it, everyone around you could be really nice to you all the time, but in your head they're all bullies, mean people constantly making fun of you. Like compliments that aren't actually compliments but mean insults in disguise.

This anime is a prequel spinoff to Barakamon. I haven’t seen a comment that has pointed this out yet.
Both good stories, but this one is supposed to explain Handa's social awkwardness in the main series and also is more a koma theater than to be taken so seriously. Indeed, everything is done for a gag/punchline... especially at the detriment of characters' feelings.
So that is why Handa is familiar.

It’s somewhat refreshing, because of the premise being that of kids/teenagers generally being idiots instead of just the Mc or his general group.
Because he develops social anxiety due to his so-called best friend being a young jackass. While his would be new friends, are slightly more innocent for not realizing how creepy they’re being while just trying to help him etc..
God, watching this is both funny and frustrating
The recap doesnt do it justice, its one of the funniest anime i have ever seen. And this show is extremely realistic, many popular guys have a hard time realising they're popular because it feels so unreal especially if they're introverts
