    Yes, it's natural & I doubt there is a better cover crop with so many benefits. I have a quarter acre that I planted too thick with forage radishes & kale. Right now the turnips I also put in there back in mid-August took off & right now r 6" 6" tall with bulbs. Never had volunteer Buckwheat but now I can't plant it with volunteer turnips in there! It's been a weird past 6 months up here in MN.

    This is a good idea never thought of it. I guess would be better than just leaving your plots bare and having weeds grow in it

    Thanks for sharing your working experiences and observations with buckwheat. Im interested in history through landscape. The little details paint a big picture. Plus I grew some buckwheat to understand why if people rarely bother harvesting it as a crop, do they grow it? Some plants aren't for humans directly. I get it now

    This is JUST what I've been looking for! I am starting new plots in SC. Terrible soil, 4.72 PH. I limed and want to plant buckwheat and crimson clover to start building my soil. I have set target of 2025 to hunt on property so have time to make improvements. My question, should I plant a perennial (clover, chicory) with buckwheat/crimson this spring, or wait until buckwheat/crimson has had a chance to provide some soil improvement and then add perennials? Awesome videos, thanks for sharing great knowledge base!!

    I just got my buckwheat planted yesterday ahead of a great rain last night. It looks like tomorrow and monday nights will be very cold, but from then on, cold is behind us in the South. I know buckwheat is not cold tolerant. My question is will these next two cold, cold nights impact germination, or is buckwheat sensitive to cold only after germination???

    I planted BW for the first time 3 weeks ago- it's doing great and is already 1 foot tall. Should I just leave it alone and let it flower and seed since we're 6 months away from our first frost here in South Georgia?

    • @morrismonet3554
      @morrismonet3554 Před 3 měsíci

      I would think that depends on what you intend to plant for the next crop. Corn? Soybeans? Or else it seems like you have time to let it go to seed, mow it down and get a second buckwheat crop, then you could terminate before it sets seed and then plant a fall brassica food plot. I'm up north, so one buckwheat plot, then kill it before it sets seed, then the fall-winter brassica blend goes in.

    You mentioned discing in your 1st buckwheat planting, than seeding in a 2nd planting of buckwheat. When ya do this, do you have to spray it with glyphosate first b4 discing? Or are you killing it when ya disc?? Thx

    Love the videos man. I have a plot from last year that was brassicas in one strip and then radish, rye, oats and some peas in another strip. All of that is growing back this spring. I want to plant some buckwheat as a cover crop and also to help build the soil. Would you recommend spraying and disking all the old vegetation before planting the buckwheat, or just disc and plant? Also, do you fertilize when you plant your buckwheat? I have already limed and I will fertilize with triple 19 when I plant the fall crops. Ty for the help brother. 👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻🇺🇸

      Thanks appreciate it. I try not to use chemicals if I don’t have to. When you kill a plant with chemicals it drys it out. People always talk about if you disc the ground you loose moisture we’ll sure. When you kill
      The plant weeks ahead of time with chemicals and then disc it in there’s no green manure anymore and no moisture. If it was me I would disc what’s there now and plant tour buck wheat also fertilize. Come time to plant fall plot I would do the same thing. Disc the buck wheat in and over seed a little and also fertilize again.

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      I would recommend that for sure. Many different ways you can do it. You can put them on the edge or even in the plot. They are a great compliment to a food plot. A lot of times if they are on the edge they will hit that first then move into the plot. They can be a great staging area

    Re watching your live podcast. Guy had a question about rocky clay soil. I had an idea of going to a landscape company a buying or maybe getting for nothing old pallets of sod that died and laying it out. But it has an inch of top soil attached. If not to large an area an layer old sod. Could work for getting top of plot back to a better condition. Just a thought.

    So does it matter sending in mud for soil test. The ground is a mess here. Its rain or snow it seems like. Sad thing is its already starting out like last year. In southern il thousands of acres did not get planted last year because it just never dried out till it was to late. Are farmer wasn't able to plant 1200 of the 3000 acres he farms. That included my farm.

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

      You can do the soil sample just let it dry before you send it out. Last year was very wet where I was then it was dry for the longest time. Never have the perfect situations

    I'm trying to do some research on this for a foot plot on my hunting property. Is this a good plot for the whole season? Seems like most say to have this until the fall and then plant something else in its place. Does this withstand the colder weather at all?

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      Buck wheat loves heat. It will die at first frost. Mainly it’s used to build organic matter and prevent weeds. Planted in the spring or early summer it matures in about 70 day’s. This is not good for a fall plot. For the fall you’ll need something such as brassicas wheat oats and rye.

  • @jean-pascalmailloux7957

    If I use it only for a summer crop and switching to brassica in the summer, do you know if I can plant buckwheat year after year in the same location? I know that they say it's better to do rotations with our plantings, but does that apply also to buckwheat plantings considering it will become something else in the fall(brassica one year, cereals the next year)?

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
      @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      Most times with buckwheat broadcasting is good enough as long as you had soil to seed contact. Always best to drag in but you should be good

    • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

      All plants need a decent ph to grow and to become palatable. Soil for buckwheat needs to be above a 6. Closer to 6.5 would be best.
