- We completed initial testing of the @SpaceX Starlink in Kingston Jamaica and so far, performance has been impressive, when compared to home service. Next we will be doing a remote test, however, we will need portable power to complete these tests. Keep posted.

I'm in Mobay, and when I saw the other day that Starlink is here. I decided to run a Flow test and noticed an increase in my FLOW speeds from 46-50mbps ish, to now 100mbps+. So competition is good for us all.

@@glenfordwilliams5716 Yeah man, not everywhere in Mobay has equal speeds. Because some time ago while living in Salt Spring the speed was ok, in the 30s, and when I moved to Rosehall I got low 40s to 50s.
Could be how far you are from their transmission tower.

I ordered mine Nov 21 and it was supposed to ship by Dec 5 but the date passed and they removed the expected ship date. Anyone knows what is happening or anyone experiencing the same?
I just got my Starlink and put it on the roof today. 140 down, 20 up. Low latency. One test I just ran was as low as 13ms. After it’s up a day or so and gets totally locked in I understand the speeds could go higher. I got the Ethernet adapter and bought a small unmanaged gigabit switch on Amazon. All is working perfectly. I anchored the mounting stand to cement blocks on my zinc roof. 😂 I’ll probably get a real mount once I know the perfect spot for it. Loving it so far, and so fast. That’s why I’m up at 3:00am. Couldn’t sleep with all that internet speed just sitting there unused. So I got up to use it. 🎉❤😂

@@crosses101the main issue is having money up front to put in the system. Once you have solar, you will see that the money you spent for 5 years of electricity is way less than you would have given to JPS for unreliable service over the same time.
A DYI off-grid setup for a cabin is very cost effective. Just need a LifePO4 battery (or two) a charge controller and inverter (good prices on Amazon) and a couple used panels. Good to go.

starlink are for persons who are stuck with dsl or don't have access to any form of high speed internet. with that said i recommend to go flow since they are normally cheaper and offer good speeds if ur in one of there area where ether their fiber or dossic cable is available.

Interestingly all satellite data services work better closer to the equator do to their orientation. Just a heads up, Starlink has started to impose a 1TB data cap within a rolling 6 month billing cycles. Once exceeded they will throttle the data till the next payment.

Initial purchase cost is $500 ($100 upfront to reserve it, and $400 when it’s ready). The first month was $55 (approx) but waiting to see what 2nd month is like

Yes, it’s in Jamaica. It’s been standing and battling the elements for almost a year now. Lots of mildew and wear in some areas, but it has treated us well for the time. We may get another as a replacement (but will take better care, next time).

the hype about starlink is good n all but it's really expensive to get not to mention the monthly cost. Furthermore the speed is good but how much ppl take advantage of the speed when most ppl only use basic web base stuff like social media n few online streaming. What digi n flow provide is minimum for the average everyday use so starlink I basically for ppl who are way out of digi n flow range but if u live in city area then the jump Is not really necessary
Starlink is more for persons in areas that don’t have internet coverage now.

Hey Windsor, after ordering Starlink Online are you required to provide any additional information to get the equipment cleared through customs?
No additional cost or information is required. Once it arrives, DHL delivers to you (or you can arrange to pick it up at their office).

SpaceX's Starlink internet has included unlimited bandwidth since launch, and while the service will technically continue to provide that to customers, users who exceed 1TB of data use in a single month will now be throttled once they reach that threshold . That's a big red flag for content creator and streamers

I believe that only applies to peak hours. Usage between 11pm - 7am not affected. You would have to be a real heavy hitter to exhaust 1TB per month.
In order to use 1 TB of data in a month, you would need to stream around 171 hours of 4K video. That's the equivalent of streaming 6 hours of 4K video every day for a month, at a rate of 6 hours per day.

Am looking into start link to work from home. I currently have Flow internet and the connection is so bad I am at risk of losing my job. I have so many Flow tickets for the same problem it is a joke at this point. I have to work with wire connection though and I am not sure it starlink is ideal. I do realize that a lot of persons in the comment are very knowledgeable about this area so I would like some advice please.
Hello, so far for us, Starlink has been very reliable for our needs. We use the WiFi option only at this point, however, Starlink has an optional device for wired connection.
Hoping that other users of Starlink can share their experiences to help you with a decision. Also hope your current provider is able to address the issue with their service, soon.

WiFi is the default out of the box, but ethernet connectivity is optional and that piece must be purchased separately. Haven’t done a specific AWS test.

The outdoor piece (the dish) adjusts automatically to get the best signal from the satellite. Once you have clear unobstructed view of the sky, you do not have to do anything else, just ply in the modem and that’s it.

So far, it appears to be a fixed amount. Netflix as if you are in Jamaica. Haven’t tested VPN as yet

What address do you use to set up the account: for example if I'm on Mint Road, Grange Hill Westmoreland (small town address); this address does not show up in their system, thus allowing me to set up the account ...so...what address do/should I enter to set up the account if I'm on a small street in nowheresville Jamaica...IMO, they will have coverage for all of Jamaica, but unfortunately, not every little address will show up in their system, so this is my question
There should be an option when registering that you can check to say use the address anyway. If not, you can use the address of your credit card or a work address

Not sure I understand the question, but when I test, I am normally getting about 130mg download speed. Sometimes higher sometimes lower depending on weather condition.

What if where me live a country and a lot of trees in my yard?
If you have a lot of trees, you may have to mount it on a pole higher than the top of the trees (the cord that comes with the device is 75ft long, but you could also order the 150ft cord). Or, if you can’t, you may have to prune some of the branches from the trees (hope you don’t have to cut down any).
I recently had to move our dish that was mounted on the roof of our cabin and place it on a pole up the side of a hill, to avoid obstruction from a nearby tree.

It currently takes about 2-3 weeks for delivery. Delivery is to your door (in Jamaica) via DHL. You don’t have to setup immediately, but they will start billing after you receive it. To avoid billing, you can setup and then “pause” the service (from the website) until you are ready to use it.
How do I contact them
Signup on the starlink.com website where you can place an order, if required. Once ordered, it’s delivered to your door in Jamaica through DHL.
Is the a limit as to how many devices can be connected to the router?
Up to 128 devices (based on my research).
Any random outages and what area are u in? Kingston? For example. I was thinking about moving to Jamaica for a few months and want to be sure i can connect to theninternet for school and my job.
So far, I’ve used in Kingston and in Portland with no random outages so far.
I believe that to use Starlink in Jamaica, the device would have to be ordered for use in, and delivered to Jamaica so you may not be able to move an active starlink in one country and use it in another.
I may be wrong but would be good for u to check and confirm.

Which POP does Skylink use for Jamaica? Do you get an IP address from Jamaica or an IP address in the USA? I am asking this in relation to whether or not a VPN would still be needed.
We get a Jamaica IP address so VPN will be required to get US feed (eg for streaming services).

It works in very overcast and rain conditions. We have not tested in torrential downpour as yet, but hopefully soon.

I’m currently using in the bush of Portland and getting up to 150mb download. I have some trees obstructions which affects speed now so will be relocating the dish in another couple of weeks. I was getting 250-300mbps when used in Kingston. I guess the speed will vary based on where you are located.
