first time seeing your channel and cool vid. heres my thoughts on drummond.
i agree that he is certainly undervalued as a player in this league but he is not attractive for teams as a starting center. i think he should be one of the most sought after bench big players but he just isnt a starting calibre player. he is great at his strengths but his weaknesses are glaring. he can not shoot, which is at a premium in this league. he has no playmaking ability which is essential for an elite centre in the league with the prevalence of the drive and kick to an open shooter in todays league (look at jokic, embiid, towns, sabonis, etc. all capable passers). he can not put the ball on the floor and dribble to save his life. really really limited mid range game which makes his spacing even worse. he is a decent post player but is certainly not an elite one which limits a team in being able to run any sort of offense through him. and his touch around the rim is sub par on hook shots, fadeaways, runners etc which makes his ability to score even less attractive. he is effectively a dunker and putback guy on offence which you can not have as a starter if you want to win. his offensive rebound numbers are slightly inflated because a lot of them come from getting his own misses, which is admirable in the way he hustles and fights for the boards but reduces his value as a rebounder since those high numbers arent actually resulting in extra possessions for the team, just contested putbacks. and thats just the offensive side of the ball. despite his strong frame and his solid length, he is slow on his feet making him really ineffective in any situation where he has to switch onto a smaller player or play help defence. on top of that, he is not a very vertical athlete despite his strength meaning he doesnt provide much value as a rim protector outside of just being tall. his awareness and IQ on defence has also always been subpar. i do agree that he has improved in that regard and is now somewhere around a neutral defender but is far from a defensive anchor. teams target him in switches and expose his defensive weaknesses on the perimeter which is just not sustainable to have him out there for 30 mins a night. and yes, his numbers are attractive, but his style of play has not led to winning anywhere in his decade long career. all of these weaknesses outweigh his rebounding ability which is good (top 10-15 in the league) but not good enough to justify him starting over a guy who can guard multiple positions or step out and shoot the three. this does make it sound like i think hes a bum. he's not. he is a talented player who needs a very specific environment to excel but he can provide value to a team. i think the bench role is perfect for him, especially behind a talented big like embiid. he is a good rebounder and all teams are looking for when resting their stars is someone who can come in and be solid and not blow away what the starters have worked for (a lead). and i think thats drummond. he will secure the rebounds so teams arent getting tonnes of offensive rebounds while embiid is off the floor and mounting huge comebacks in just a few minutes, he is tall enough to be reliable enough to not give up a tonne of points in the paint, he will get the odd put-back, he'll occupy the dunkers spot so his teammates can dump it off to him when they drive for easy dunks, he will set screens and he will run the floor. he is perfect as a bench guy who can come in for 10-20mins, play with high energy and not let the opposition take a break or make a big run when embiid is off the floor. thats my take tho, great vid man
