Building and Maintaining a backyard hockey rink in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains
Check out this video documenting the process of building a large backyard rink at 5,285 feet above sea level in the snow covered rocky mountains. We'll walk through the overall process in constructing a rink, setting up boards and a liner, filling the rink, and maintaining it. With this rinks location, there are many feet of snow to clear throughout the season. Learn tips to help maintain your rink no matter how big or small.

Flags and Banners
I've had quite a few viewers ask about representing their favorite NHL/College team or country flag out at the rink next year, and I'd love to hang a flag out there for you! If you'd like to send one, the address is below. Please send us an email so we know to expect one and so we know who it is from so we can say thank you! The team flags / banners are all 28 x 44 inches and double sided. Any similar size would work. The country flags are all 3 feet by 5 feet. I've ordered many of the team flags/banners from Fanatics: fanatics.ncw6.net/gbbDPX - Most of the country flags have come from Amazon.

Holy Moly that’s a lot of work my friend. Amazing dedication 👍🏼
Thanks Dan! Hope all is well man!
Right hot damn that's a lot of work! Expensive too
@@knightwolf8877 so true tho
@@knightwolf8877 unless you have a well..but whats not expensive nowadays..metaverse?
ha ha ha ha
Charge $5 per hour, per skater... That's a fair rate...
Hey Pete, I am a Zamboni driver at a rink... when putting down the layers of ice, go over the rink with a vehicle to crack layers and fill in gaps with more water. This will make your ice stronger and less overall maintenance needed. Also, it may take longer but the smaller and more layers the better!
Wow that makes sense those lil broken pieces must act like a kinda rebar
Also if you use boiling water or close to boiling water it makes a glass finish that is hard we use a metal tank with Electric heat element from your local hardware store we fill the tank up in the evening And then the next morning we resurface it pretty much the same way you did in the video
I almost feel betrayed that he's not Canadian with how much love he puts into the sport
He’s an honourary Canuck.
Us Americans got our shit together too!
Hockey is the best sport! Definitely gotta put in the hard work for that sport :) Hope all is well up in Canada Kosta!
@@DIYPETE im 24 but adopt me plz 🇨🇦
Cant beat hockey. Especially w family and friends. Nice rink bud. Something to be proud of
I have been waiting since October for this
Hey Bees hive! Thanks so much for your support. It's been a fun year of skating again, but lots of weather challenges and maintenance to keep it going for year 3 :) Cheers and thanks for watching!
ME TOO!
At this point I'd build a pole barn around the rink. Would save a ton of work clearing off the snow. But then again for Pete that might be some of the fun of it.
Hey Justin! Definitely an idea I could see doing someday. Who knows how long I'll want to do all that work :) Clearing snow is fun for a while, but it definitely gets old toward the end of the season. Cheers!
Get a hold of Kyle from RR Buildings and do a CZcamsr collab. :D
@@ffdrew271 This is a really good idea, if they'd do it. They do great work.
Eventually he’s just gonna build a normal indoor rink
Even just a roof of some sort with retractable sides to keep the outdoor element and beautiful views!
Wow, I'm blown away by your unbridled enthusiasm and unlimited energy. Your family is blessed to have such a dedicated dad to put this enormous hockey rink together year-after-year for his children and their friends. Your videos are so professionally taped and the audio is clear and exciting to listen to. Pete, you are an extraordinary hard worker and there don't appear to be any challenges you are not prepared to take on. Snowstorms and unrelenting wind does not get you down. Congratulations and I know your family and friends greatly appreciate all your efforts.
Hello Frederick! Great to hear from you and thanks for all the kind words. It's been another fun year for the rink and we are already looking forward to year 4 :) Hope you and your family were able to get in some skating this winter and that you are doing well. Thanks again for the message and have a fun weekend! Cheers
probally one of the most scenic rinks in the nation. well done bud!
Man I could not even picture getting that much snow and having to go to work and stuff through the winters.
Wild
Wow, the sun hitting the peak of the mountain behind you ... just breathtaking!
Thanks for watching!
At this point... just buy a used zamboni or Olympia.😂 Love the dedication!
Thanks Eric! I actually had a subscriber offer to sell me one, but I need to first have a heated shop to keep it. Hopefully someday!
@@DIYPETE at this point... build a roof hahaha
That reminds me years ago We had a hockey rink in the drive way for many years Played every Friday and Sat night With many friends on the street we took to many widows out every winter Not much to do around here in the winter times Made great friends for ever having fun together every weekend
This is like field of dreams aesthetic. Incredible views
Props on the being so relentless. I can see several time I might have called it quits!
Thanks Joseph! Definitely had some challenges, but had to keep at it! Cheers!
I am very envious, I have always wanted a backyard rink at my house but never had the space. Incredible dedication and definitely would be a lot of fun for Family and friends 👍
I grew up on a 10+10 in the 60's, Thanks Pa
Keep making these. I’ll watch year 10!
Порой удивляешься какие люди упорные и как идут к своей цели! Конечно с таким парком техники это проще делать, но это никак не оправдывает тех, кто ничего не хочет делать, даже когда уже все готовое есть!
I’ve never played hockey before or even really watched hockey but this was so cool to see. Seeing you make this rink because a tradition your father started when you were young and to him even coming out to help you is so special. Wish you luck in future years with your ice rink 👍🏽
dude if you have kids or some friends who actually like hockey, grab yourselves a pair of 20 bucks hockey sticks and an inline hockey ball or puck and go at it. Im from Portugal, in europe, so we don't have any snow at all, but i got a hockey stick and a pair off puck and balls and it's so much fun!!
Man, the dream of a super nice ODR! The dedication of that guy is freaking amazing!
after watching this video, I am so thankful my city allows me to connect to the fire hydrant with 2" hose! Nice work.
Just saw your sweeper. I bought an Ariens sweeper, used it once and found it wanted to push me to one side when it's angled so traded it in for a 36" snowthrower, but what I also found is that it's better not to sweep, just shovel and the residual snow fills the cracks once you flood with warm water. Finally, I used the plastic board liners then found them to be a pain so haven't used them in 9 years and what a joy. the boards are strong enough for any slapshot and if you use plastic shovels (Garant makes good ones) your plastic liner will be fine.
Hey Pete, greetings from Norway. I was, as many others, waiting for this video. So nice to see that you did it again. This year i build my first rink and with all the tips from your preview builds, was it a huge success and everybody is loving it.
Hey Tobi! I love to hear about new rink builders and I'm so glad you did one! I bet everyone loved it and that it will create memories for years to come. Keep up the good work and I hope things are well over in Norway! My great grandpa came over from Norway, so we have a Norway flag out at the rink. Cheers!
Find yourself someone that loves you as much as this guy loves hockey rinks
Well I’ll tell you what...if any of your friends didn’t appreciate you before, they will now after they watch this video. You’re very generous with your time and resources for the love of the game. Cheers to you.
Thanks for watching Johnny! Definitely fun to share the rink, everyone is usually very appreciative, but I know a lot have know idea that it takes much work. When they show up and the ice just looks good, I think they just figure that is how it always is. But we rink builders definitely know! :) Cheers!
Just found your channel a few days ago, checked the date and too my delight year 3 would hopefully be out soon! Thank you so much for sharing your work!
Thanks so much for subscribing! Hope all is going well and have a great start to your week!
I've been following your videos since year one and I'm just as impressed every time. Your work with this project is absolutely incredible. Also not to forget all the people around you that helps you with this amazing backyardrink. Thumbs up from Sweden.
Let's follow him over the years to "track the effects of global warming"...
@@thetruthserum2816 what!!!!
@@michaelsvenson2456 So he mentioned that there was an "unexpected warm spell", which I have seen other outdoor rink videos mention as well, including natural bodies of water that ice skaters use... So, ice skaters would be ones who would notice that their rinks / ice ponds melted unexpectedly over time, and how long they lasted season over season. Now that global CO2 is approaching 420 ppm in the Atmosphere, and the oceans have the "hottest temperature on record"... all that trapped heat has to go somewhere.
I caught the first video a few months ago .... was looking forward to this.... amazing dedication ...
Thanks Robert!
Congratulations! Great public service. Kids owe you big time.
Thanks for watching! It's always nice when folks and kids who use it are appreciative. Seems like everyone is for the most part. Cheers!
Just make it permanent, the backdrops insane.
He should. Im sure he could make great money hosting tournaments there and get good funding for it. People would come all over to play there just for the backdrop.
Perhaps someday :) Cheers
I'm 2 hours away... I'd partake in any tournament thrown! I'm also a backstop lol rare apparently in these parts of Montana
For those heavy snowstorms, you kinda need to remove the snow 3 times a day to keep it clean. Maybe a young lad can drive it when the school is closed due to weather. You could tell him to stay 2-3 feet away from the boards if he's a bit afraid to bump them.
Montana wont close schools due to weather. Sorry just doesnt happen...
Great to hear from you! If the snow is coming straight down, I'll sometimes go out a few times a day to work on things, but a lot of times we'll have 3-4 days solid of wind and snow, and it is a losing cause to try and stay on top of it because it will blow right back in. Cheers!
Dude you have a ton of patients and a unbelievable dedication to having fun!! Great video
Seeing all those machines is breaking my DIY bubble
Oh and absolutely Love the views you have of the mountains. I'm from Pa and definitely do not love the snow you have there. I thought ours was bad....lol
Thanks and hope all is well over in PA!
Amazing work as always Pete, looked like a really tough year due to the weather,. Stunning build and stunning property. Cheers from the UK 👍🏻
Great to hear from you Jon! Thanks so much, definitely a rough winter for a lot of rink builders this season. Hope you are doing well over in the UK!
Привет вам из России, каждый день чищу лед от снега, думал уже бросать это дело, но посмотрел Ваш ролик и он зарядил меня энергией. Спасибо! Пойду снова чистить)))
Wow and the 19:40 mark there is a beautiful mountain shot, Heavenly, God Bless!
Yeeees!watched 2.0 yesterday lol thinking where’s the 3.0..
So far the best yt channel love from 🇸🇰🇸🇰
Thanks so much for watching! Hope all is well over there!
Growing up in Wisconsin the fire department would flood the school baseball yard and let it freeze. It made for an OK rink. The problem was the neighborhood dogs would pee on the rink. Each dog would pee in the same spot and over time we would have these 3 feet in diameter yellow mons to skate around.
There are so many things that are challenging when maintaining a rink! Bummer about the dog pee. I have a buddy with a pond that geese fly over all the time and his biggest challenge is good poop melting holes in the ice. There is always something!
Here in Finland pretty much every schools yard and half of the other public sports fields become an ice rink in the winter. After snowfall the cities use big tractors to first plow the snow and then they use big sweepers with the tractors to keep the surface clean. The motorized sweeper is definitely a pro move :D
I'm Finnish ice hokey player and one of my dreams is come to that hockey ring some year. That's looking so cool and that community what you have there is fantastic!
Holy! What an awesome view! You’re so lucky with that spot. The view is just wow 😍
"I built a hockey rink in my backyard. People come from miles around just to fight there."
haha, nice
Maaan , i admire you a lot of your work since my 11 s years, but how you have all that time and money in order to keep doing what you do ^^
Thanks so much for watching and great to hear from you! Take care and have a good week!
Love this! Taking your father and yours tradition, kicking it up and notch and serving the whole community with it. Amazing dedication.
I'm blown away just amazing.
There's me complaining when I have to put up the 12ft pool every year 😅
Nice! I'm also one of those people that wait an entire year for this video ;) This year I made my own rink thanks to you! Smaller in scale - it ended up being 32x26 feet. Very lucky with the weather - here in Poland we don't really get many freezing days but this year was crazy cold and we ended up skating for a month. It was a tough but really rewarding project. We'd get out around midnight many times to resurface the ice. Dealing with hoses that freeze if you stop the water running was a nightmare :) Looking forward to next season already :) If anyone is interested I posted some photos and stories on my instagram @piotrkol_lawn :D Cheers!
HI Piotrkol! Thanks for sharing and it is neat to hear you did a rink in Poland. Sounds like you were able to put it to good use when you could. Keep up the good work!
i love the yearly update. cant believe how passionate you are about your rink! its sooo nice!
That opening shot gave me a “Field of Dreams” vibe.
If you build it, they will come.
This is where they should have had the outdoor games not at Lake Tahoe.
Would be another fun mountain venue! :) Cheers
Me living in a hot equatorial country where it doesn't snow: well this is interesting.
Haha for sure, I get it! Well enjoy the warm temperatures and I hope all is well. The season is coming to an end up here shortly and those warm temperatures sound amazing. Cheers
THAT'S A LOT OF WORK ! But, what a great rink ! Using a jar of last year's water was a fantastic touch. 3) This can only be successful when you have friends, lots of friends, lots of 'great' friends ! And endless hours of more work during the season. Made our share of outdoor rinks in the pass (For the kids, of course) Our largest was 40' X 80'. Water supply was a big issue but found someone who gave us water delivery service (5,000 gals. at a time) This was a game changer for us and it was free for three fantastic seasons ! Today we no longer make the rink but this video brings back all those memories. That power sweeper is one great tool ! We never thought of that machine and I can imagine the amount of work that would have saved us.
Thanks for one great video ! Stay safe.
This is just awesome! Too bad it won't ever get cold enough for a backyard rink over here where I live... and I don't even have a backyard. But if I had, it would definitely be a fun project! Two thumbs up for this!
That’s definitely a labor of love and an whole lot of work. It look so awesome when it was already to go
Always love watching Pete’s work. I built one of his coolers years ago. People loved it.
Wow thanks! Yeah the cooler was a fun project, hope you are getting good use out of yours!
Wow this brings back memories. I put a 26x36 rink in my yard outside Toronto...it was constant work keeping the ice clean but no better feeling than skating on a crispy cold night on some gleaming fresh ice!
That is amazing!! I’m from Scotland so never seen anything like this. I’m gobsmacked. Great work I hope you have a great time on the ice.
What a wonderful experience you provide for your family and friends. You are doing a fantastic job. When I was a boy / teen, I helped build and maintain an ice surface 100' x 49' in a quonset style building. The water supply was about 150 feet from the rink so we learned to keep the water running while we dragged the hose to the rink to keep it from freezing. (40 degrees below zero makes that happen) Those were great days. I loved your very special time with your dad helping on this rink. Tradition is everything.
Guy, you have a beautiful view in your backyard. Absolutely stunning! I live in South Carolina, and we have some amazing views of the mountains and the ocean, but none compares to those snow cap mountains in this video. 👍
Your passion is commendable
It was sad to see you take it down after all the hard work put into that rink! Im sure your family and friends appreciate the dedication.... Nice Job!
@nhl this guys deserves a winter classic game on his property for all his work.
Respect !!! Canadian hockey love .
Hehehe watching this from a hot Western Australia where we're having the hottest summer on record. 6 days in a row above 40°c so far and only half way through. This makes me feel like migrating 😂
I'm amazed at all of the equipment he has!
What a great rink brings back so many memories when I made ours for our son well done !!!
Backyard rinks are the best for creating memories! :) So cool
Good work. I have been working for a school. And when winter comes, me and my co worker been doing it 6 years. Man it is a lot of work just to maintain a rink. First few years we scraped to asphalt. The last 2 years we have been packing it, and flooding it that way. I enjoy doing this for our community. The kids like it. Each year we get better. Really looking forward to this year though. So far I am pack it riding back and forth and are rink is a pretty good size, I never measured it. Looks like every other school/community outdoor rink
I’m subscribing just because of the effort you put in. Me and a big group of friends really say here and watched this for 30 minutes, we are not good at ice skating at all
Always glad to find a DiY PETE video. in my queue. As I said after the first one...I am mesmerized watching this evolution and I can't even skate. Rock on my friend and GBR!
For the amount of money you’ve already invested in this, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be much of a leap to put a rigid tent structure over top to make the world’s first DIY IDR 🤓🤓💪 Amazing stuff!
haha! Perhaps someday!
Dedicated father. Kudos! Oh, what an incredible view!
Thanks so much! Hope all is well
You should be nominated for the Nobel Prize for perseverance.Thank you for the film and your efforts. Very interesting to watch!
It’s a labor of love for sure. I built our first rink this yr at about 8500 ft S of Steamboat Springs, CO. Your videos over the last two seasons inspired me to do it. Looking forward to making adjustments this summer for a bigger better rink next yr. Cheers.
Hey Michael! Wow, so neat you did a rink at 8500 ft, that is up there! What size are you currently at? Sounds like an amazing rink!
Great job man. I also have had a 40x80' Nice Rink for about 10 years up in Northern Ontario. As our kids get into their late teens and early twenties, it gets even more popular. Here's some quick tips, use water trucks so you get water in as quick as possible and you get indoor ice quality, use the tape they sell since you can poke a hole in the liner then tape it up once flat, buy the bigger version of the T pull behind gizmo with the towel on the end from NiceRink and you won't have to deal with uneven ice and use warm water to ensure a homogeneous matrix, don't cut the poly around the rink to high since if the black brackets are exposed to sun, they heat up and melt the ice in those locations, we leave our boards up all year, I just remove and replace the liner each year. Great job man, you'll be glad you made this family investment.
Just came across your videos through nice rink on Facebook. I live in New Orleans so there is never a chance for this down here. I grew up a hockey fan down here and always wanted a back yard rink growing up. Amazing job and work! You have a great community of friends and family to help and share this awesome rink!
Wow what a beautiful spot!
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen when it comes to hockey rinks ,skating and playing hockey ! This is wayyyyy beyond Great Job Pete !
Thanks so much Richard!
There's no limit you you won't do for the love of the game. I still can't get over that view. Great job!! And ingenuity!!
Thanks Tony!
Don't play hockey and hate the cold but this was absolutely awesome to watch, lots of hard work to build and maintain an outdoor rink!
I don't understand why someone would dislike a passion project like this
Thanks for watching! You must be a private pilot by looking at your username. What do you fly?! -- I've found that no matter what it is a video of, it can't please everyone. So I just do my best and hope it goes over well. I also know my grandpa has given me a downvote before because he didn't know what he was clicking and accidentally clicked thumbs down;) Cheers!
Amazing job Pete!! I know how much work rinks can be and you have taken it to another level!! Well done sir!
Hey thanks Troy! Fun to get to skate at your rink this year too. Hopefully next year we'll have a better weather season. Cheers and see you at our game soon!
I truely hope your proud as hell of your rink. If i had a rink even half as nice as that i would feel like a god every time i laid eyes on it
Beautiful rink & location. Hope this project continues to grow over the years. You are a legend sir
Thanks for watching!
That there is a work of art!
Loving this! My go to-video all year round! More videos of this please!
Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪
This is one of the coolest things I've seen. I wish I had a backyard.
Thanks for watching!
So much work for so little fun, but I am loving this...what an effort!
Thanks for watching!
Those are some great memories! Wish I could do that for my kids!
We built a small rink in the backyard growing up and it was so much fun. ( out of a plastic sheet and plywood boards ) - If you live in a cold weather climate you definitely should!
OMG I live in Winnipeg where hockey is a part of life and maybe at most spend 1/2 week on my rink maintenance. You my friend are a rink ironman. You vs. Mother nature. Insane!
Wow man so much work. Hats off to you man.
That’s awesome that your rink made it into USA hockey magazine. I remember seeing it about a month or so ago in that issue
Thanks! Yeah it was definitely fun to get to open up the magazine and see it. Cheers!
Ive been watching since the first year and I always look forward to watching Petes odr video
Thanks Alexander, I appreciate it! Hope All is well and that you were able to get in some skating this winter!
Gotta respect the odr commitment
That's just so impressive!! Well done!
The mountains behind the ice rink are beautiful
Thanks for watching!
Wow, lot of work but lot of passion !
I love your commitment. What an amazing build!
Thanks Chris!
That's a kick-ass rink hell yeah!!!
Just found this channel now I’m binge watching appreciate the content bud new favorite channel
Y’all must really loooove some hockey! Wow that’s a ton to keep up.
We do! :) Lots of upkeep this year but hopefully next year will be a little less. Cheers
I drive by your place on my way into Eagle Rock Reserve and wondered for the last year what those poles were. Fast forward to your video being recommended and recognizing the view and putting two and two together.
