I giggled when you were answering about missing gardening and you said getting out and working in it. I too am a Michigander and until Mother nature stops shaking the snow globe every three days we we share your longing to be outside doing something😉😊❄️☔️🌧️
My favorite mantra that I repeat often is from Dave Ramsey, “If you are willing to live like no one else, someday you WILL live like no one else”. Words to live by when we feel the tug to hop in the mainstream and keep up with the Jones’. Good for you guys! We are Dave Ramsey folks too. It works!
I hadn't even thought of giving my garden a 7 year rest until I heard that you were. The more I thought about it, the more I decided to do it. I have a very tiny garden but it is the same principle. I did; however, decide that putting new bagged dirt into some pots and planting seeds was ok for me so I'm doing that. Thanks for the inspiration.
So much work goes into filming these, the camera angles and shots. Absolutely awesome, you guys are so appreciated! Meatloaf is now on my list!!
I mainly watch what's for dinner which I really enjoy think y'all are so cute! I do love when the dogs pop in especially the big white one! Watching from south Mississippi!
Todd works the same kind of stuff as my husband does. Even the boys heard what Todd does and yelled that's what Dad works.😂
That is a great idea to can 2 veggies together in one jar. My family loves Ham, green beans and potatoes. Canning the potatoes with the green beans would be most helpful! 😃 Many blessings, and prosperity to all! 💜
No questions, but wanted to say I really enjoy your videos! You both seem so kind and genuine!
Hey Guys, I too, taking a break on gardening this year and working on my flower beds, and the farm, fences, and getting ready for some goats and hopefully some cows, hugs from La Fayette, Ga.
i miss my garden so much! i cant wait for it in full bloom.
I love your videos they are always so helpful to me. We are converting my building into a pantry because we have no more space in our house to store staples and all of our canned, dehydrated, and fermented garden items. Thank you for sharing with us. Have a blessed week.
I put grated carrots, zucchini, carrots, bell pepper, onions, 1 or 2 eggs, crushed crackers, Worcester sauce, catsup, salt and pepper in my ground beef and pork mix. The vegetables help to make it moist and add great flavor. It helps me get vegetables since I can't chew food due to mouth cancer.
Woody is SOOO DANG ADORABLE!!
Make these “What’s for dinner meetings” more a Homestead strategy meeting. We need a schedule of what your plans are for the year.
- Chickens, pigs, lambs - how many? What kind? When?
- Make a smoke house. Do sausage.
- Plant trees? alfalfa, oats?
- Steelhead should be running soon. Todd needs to get to the cabin.
- What about the boat? HUGE walleye this time of year. Walleye spinner nightcrawler harness 1.5’ off the bottom.
- I’ve had some luck with a remote Blink camera hooked to a small battery. You could use it to monitor the chickens. They have antennas to get the WIFI to reach.
All kinds of fun out there to do.
Unbelievable how people are so curious.
Hopefully I am not offended no one and if I am please be free to delete it !
First of all I couldn't see my self making a video eating my precious dinner ... two what's your plans ... 3........ why the dogs aren't in the picture more ... please ! Whatever you bring to the table as a content!? It's precious informative plus toke plenty of hard work ! For that I just so thank you for what you do!
God bless 🙏
I was watching you make the meatloaf thinking “isn’t that going to have trouble cooking through and not being greasy but I never even thought to flip it out of the pan and put the topping and place in the oven” and it didn’t look greasy at all. I’m definitely going to try it this way. Thank you both for sharing your meals it is one of my husband and I’s favorites to watch.
I've been a remote worker for the last 10 yrs- 8 yrs as an EMR trainer for a healthcare software company in the Southeast, and the last 2 yrs for a local Healthcare provider that doesn't require me to be in person. It's great! It also allows me at lunch and during breaks to enjoy my yard and garden.
I love watching you all and have learned so much from you. Keep up the great work and sharing your lives with us!
I live in the high desert and there is loads of wildlife. I only have a small fenced in area to garden so I do EVERYTHING in containers. If you get too antsy you can grow a few things in containers❤
I'd love you to talk about the "empty nester life." I know that's more parenting related than homesteading. But I'd love to hear your encouragement and insight in that area. We have 8 kids and the oldest just moved out and the 2nd is away at college and the next 4 are going to graduate in rapid succession (every year of high school covered!)
This is a good year for a green house heated for starting your plants! Right! Todd is so good with this kind of thing. Go Todd
I have been cooking a long time and have never seen or thought of flipping the meatloaf over to brown on the other side! Consider my mind blown! 😱
I love these questions and answer sessions
Great idea canning the green beans and potatoes together why did I not think of that ! We never miss a year of gardening we rotate our garden every seven years from one spot to another!
Momma loved cooking green beans and potatoes together and we seven kids loved eating it. 😋😋😋😋
I LOVE your videos of what you're having for dinner. How about a fun question...Rachel and Todd what is your FAVORITE meal? I would love to hear.
Thank you for sharing. I’m relatively new and learning more about you. Love your channel. Take care✌️🇺🇸❤️
We had smoked porkbutt sandwiches and this morning we had leftovers porkbutt omelette
Bummer, I can't watch ur video at the moment. Bonus, I have to get outside and direct where I want my first load of wood chips for the year!! 🙏🤗🤗🙏🤗So happy and thankful!!!
So glad your not a dog channel 😊 I love my pets but!!! ❤
Love your ramblings
That meatloaf looked so good it made me want make some for dinner.
Thanks for answering about the dog :)
I really enjoy all your videos. I've learned so much from you guys. Rachel you've help me have more confidence in canning and preserving. You've help me try new things that I've always wanted to try. So thank you so much!!
Making a lot of your own compost is a ton of work...if you're looking to feed the soil that's a great project! I know you could scrounge up a lot more greens and browns from your property if you had the time, and maybe you do now?
I’ve never thought to put cheese in meatloaf, I’m sure my family would love it. It doesn’t look like it’d be overwhelming.
I work from home.. I call 1/2 business attire. Business on the top party on the bottom!! Happen more in summer when it is hot and muggy.
Hello fellow MICHIGANDERS❤
I just love your show and watching the videos. We switch garden areas every few years. Granny always had 3 different areas and one was always fallow for a year. I was just starting some seeds out today!!!
I enjoy your "rambling". ❤
Luv dog videos!♥️🐾
Does Todd have a culinary background? The way he flips things in the skillet, chops, and creating with different flavors makes me wonder. I so enjoy watching the two of you. Thanks for sharing with us.
What about doing some straw bale gardening outside of the garden area this year? You can put the straw on the garden afterwards.
Thank you for the cheering on! I come home from work and tend my seedlings. Love the dirt in my nails. Our garden is 1 acre. This will be the 50-something year it’s been planted. There’s no way I could not grow a garden. Kudos to you for being able to do what you do! I understand why you’re doing it, but I just couldn’t.
I just got my husband a sous vide “machine”. We’re excited to try it! Thank you for the What’s for Dinner Vlog today 🌺
Never tried canning potatoes and green beans together before! I've always done them separately.....guess I'll be trying it! Thank you!👍👍👍
Yea i'm just starting season five almost caught up
You flashed the jar tops. I would put a full day, month, year on them. That's for traceability in case you get a set of bad lids, jars, or preserving. It'll help you keep an eye on the others if you have one go bad of that canning session.
Love the channel!
I understand the need to rest the veg patch for the seventh year but gardening can bring so much joy to the heart that I would miss it.
Maybe you can enjoy growing non-food plants in another area without it being work or breaking the rules.
Great video!! Thank you!!
Todd, I would like to see you make fried potatoes with canned potatoes and corn startch. I seen it in one of your videos but can't find it! Thanks
Great video.
Thanks for the chat and dinner ideas!
your dinner tonight looks wonderful! I've never done potatoes and green beans together. That sounds great!!
Blessings to you both 🥰
The food looks delicious 😊
Now that Meatlofe looks delicious!!!
I love y’all’s channel. ❤I’m making meatloaf for supper tomorrow night. We love it.
Will you grow salad ingredients? I always grow tomatoes, cucumbers, leaf lettuce because fresher is always better. Oh and herbs. I grow all these in pots on the patio
I just bought a broadfork! I'm excited to use it!
Todd needs to build you a greenhouse this year 😊
Thanks for sharing love the video's
Thank you so much Rachel & Todd you answered my question about the white dog ♥️♥️
Patricia
Great idea.if canning green beans and potatoes
I am relatively new to your channel and am just enjoying all of your content. If I have thought of any questions, it seems they are answered in current or previous videos. So, I try to comment on most, but generally don’t ask questions. Anyway, just want to say thanks for putting yourselves out here and being willing to share all that you do. I am learning many wonderful things.
I’m new to your channel and love your content but the flashes of what you put in the pots as you are cooking is a joy fast.
Great idea, never thought of taking the meat loaf out of the loaf pans and topping the sauce on then instead of just spreading it in the loaf pan. Always love a cold meatloaf sandwich with spicy mustard for lunch the next day.
I always find it interesting, the different variations of making meatloaf. My family always wants au gratin potatoes, and green beans with it. Your potatoes with green beans look good. I will definitely be trying that next time.
I know you have plenty to keep you busy, but maybe you can help a neighbor or friend one weekend in their garden, to get your hands in the dirt and work! I am sure they would love the help!
Question: I'm not sure if I missed an update in a previous video but I was curious how the willow structure you started was doing? We just purchased some to make a dome for our kids to play in. If you haven't already I would love to see an update on it!
Good meals from pantry items.
We are moving this spring and I have not started any seeds or prepped anything. I miss it! Can't wait to get into the new place and get a few things started in my green stalk and pots.
I’m a newbie. I watched my first episode a couple weeks ago on you making jams and syrup I believe. I have watched several more since. Tonight’s was fun as I didn’t know anything about the two of you so good to have some background.
It's also about the volunteer bounty that the Lord wants to bless you with on the seventh year.
My goodness your white pup looks so similar to my Indie girl, she is a Pitbull/coonhound mix and she does the same thing when small critters are around (squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, armadillo where we live). The all white dog with a few sparse brown spots, scratching at the door and whining is an uncanny resemblance. Haha! Love watching your videos and love to see the furry babies in the background.
Maybe with your extra garden time help a friend with their garden?
I made meatloaf last week it was really good. We only have it like once a yr.
Hi Rachel & Todd.. even though you’re not actually gardening this year… will you be doing your green stalk garden ..? Resting the soil… does that include pots and green stalks… ?? Just wondering! 😊
That Meatloaf!!!!
This is our 7th year also so we're not doing a garden. I already did all the planning, but it will be for NEXT year. I'm keeping myself busy with a writing project but am getting a little antsy. Hubby is planning to dig up the old septic tank because the garden is starting to cave in around it so I keep telling myself it's a good thing we are NOT gardening this year!
I’m also doing a 7th year rest for my land this year…it couldn’t have come at a better time! After working so hard on my land for six years I’m exhausted!
Going back a bit..........what about the arbor thing you were doing with trees for a wedding?
Or canned garlic with onions
Will you do the greenstalks or other container gardening at all? How can you not have a fresh tomato all summer? lol
Omg…to not garden this year would freak me out. I understand why your doing it though. Could you container garden?
I'd like to ask a question: I want to plant blueberry bushes. How, when did you plant yours? how long after planting do they take to produce? Any suggestions on type and where to purchase? online or at Horrock's maybe? thanks!
Have you ever grown black beauty tomatoes? My husband wants us to grow em.
I know you are probably bombarded with questions at this point but I'm curious:
ARE YOU PLANNING ON DOING SOME CONTAINER GARDENING? YOU HAVE A GREAT DECK AND THOSE GREENSTOCK THINGYS, MAYBE GET A COUPLE MORE??? RACHAEL, YOU HAVE TO GROW AT LEAST 2 TOMATO PLANTS, COME ON!!! 😄
Hello Todd & Rachel. I have a question for you about the Green Stalk. Do you have a problem with it blowing over with the wind? How would you handle that? Thanks
Hiii! I'm planting potatoes for the first time this year. I ordered seed potatoes from Gurneys and they are arriving tomorrow ready to plant. However I can't plant until May. Gurneys said to store in a cool place still packaged - just wondering if they will be fine waiting for a little over a month? I put in my zone when ordering and this was their schedule. Please help, thank you!!! 😁
And thank you for the videos!! 💚
Super glad it’s not a sabbatical year for us Im almost out of tomatoes 😅
Is the rule the same if you have raised garden beds that we have to added soil to top off every year? Rest on the seventh year?
🐶 ❤
The dogs are so cute!!!! Do you still have the boat?
Rachel, do you have a link to a video you've done on canning the green beans/potatoes ? Or do you just raw pack it all , water to 1/2 inch and process 75 minutes ?
My hubby was wondering what products Todd uses on his beard? I think my hubby aspires to have a beard like Todd. 😊
Would you consider foraging, mushrooms, or helping friends pick fruit etc as gardening this year, and using this produce for use.
Are you going to plant anything in your greenstalks, like lettuce?
Also.... you're letting your land rest, but can you still plant in your green salks??
I often wondered if you could can your beans and potatoes together! How did you process that? I would really like to do that. Since there are only two of us, that would be perfect.
Take the two things, green beans and pototoes, and can them for whichever is the longest.
@@1870s Thank You!
Are you able to go to the cabin at all? I know that region did get a lot of snow this year. Nancy from nebraska
Yes to common goals, love watching you two!😊❤ Have you made homemade Chili Sauce? Use it over our meatloaf per Mrs. Lori at Whippoorwill.
No, never made it
Are you going to plant at least one tomato plant for fresh eating? Lots of good looking dinner at your place,
