“The Truth Untold” is based on the story of the Smeraldo flower.
-In a village of northern Italy called ‘La Città di smeraldo’, there was a small secluded castle. In that castle lived a man with grotesque appearance. He was the love child of a duke from a powerful family in Florence. The duke fell in love with the daughter of his gardener and gave birth to this man. The mother of the man passed away from excessive bleeding after giving birth to him. The wife and children of the duke wanted to kill the man, so the duke sent the man away to let him escape.
The man hid himself in the old castle, lonely. probably, it was because of the hatred he received from birth and while he's growing up that he didn’t open his heart to anyone, he got angry and hid if someone tried to approach him. His only joy was growing flowers in his garden. But one day, a girl appeared near the man’s castle. The girl in ragged clothes lifted her heels, jumped over the garden fence and stole the flowers. The man got angry at first, he spent the whole night to guard the garden. But in his brief moment of sleepiness, the girl picked flowers again and ran away. It happened for several days, until one night the man pretended to fall asleep and watched the girl go. He was curious. Without realizing it, the man waited for the girl, and one day he followed her. He covered himself with a cloak and after following here the man discovered, the poor and weak girl was selling flowers for a living.
The man wanted to help the girl. He wanted to teach her every method of growing flowers he knew, he wanted to teach her how to grow beautiful flowers. But he couldn’t come forward to the girl. She would be scared of him, she wouldn’t love his grotesque appearance. In the end, the only thing he could do was to grow and take care of the flowers so she could keep coming to his garden. The man decided to make a special flower that doesn't exist in the world. He started to make a flower so that the girl could sell at an expensive price. The man shut himself in the castle to make the flower. After countless attempts, the man made a flower that never existed in the world, and filled his garden with that flower. But the girl was nowhere to be seen. No matter how much he waited, the girl wouldn’t come to his garden. The man grew concerned and went to the village with his face covered. But he discovered that the girl had already died.
Impressive retelling of the La Città di smeraldo, but respectfully, I don't think RM wrote this song so literally. In my opinion, the Smeraldo flower is a re-occuring theme in BTS songs for unrequited or unfulfilled love and self actualization (taking off the mask.) Remember, they are from Korea and it's a very conventional and conservative society. They have had to be very careful about what they are able to show the public about their true (shadow-selves.) No drinking, no swearing, perfection in all ways (not an Idol face!)... Some things are outside their public reach and this literary interpretation is a book cover, the mask, if you will, versus what's inside the book. Listen to BTS and what they are saying and trust that.
@renton5482 Because of RM's IQ I will say that you are taking it too lightly. Even in a society that condones things . It is still hidden behind a mask......meaning " what is not said."

I live in the state of Idaho and we are known for being a place that is safe to walk the streets at night (and we are )
And plus no litter on the streets.etc. AND no hookers anywhere (that's the cover).But every cop and public officials know who and where to find them downtown. They wear a mask and pretend( OR turning your back is another expression ). I knew nothing about about this until I went I clubbing one night. At a bar (we have one street) l a man approached me and said I was pretty enough to work for him. I was shocked. I said I had to go to the bathroom and snuck out the backdoor. Found out later why the bar had a strange nickname. Thankfully the military were on leave (I live in a military town) And I mingled with them. (I learned from experience that military men or firemen.love me and. always treated like a lady. I was escorted to my car and didn't go back.)

You have to read the story. And to know story you love and enjoy the song with more than just a fleeting love and (for me ) the story helped explain why the song ended the way it did. 💔

💜The Truth Untold - this is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's). The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he covered his deformed face with a mask and hid in fear, ...So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden.
One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter.
Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue stealing flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle.
After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭
The smeraldo flower plays a part in the Bangtan Universe storyline, and you will see it in various MVs.
The Smeraldo flower symbolizes the sincerity that could not be delivered.
The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to a lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by nasty comments made by people.

I think this song is every bit as much about fear and regret - fear of being vulnerable and showing your true self to others, and regret for allowing that fear to keep you hidden…until it’s too late. For BTS, I think it is hard for them (and many celebrities) to step outside of their famous personas and just be themselves. This song was on the “Love Yourself: Tear” album, which focused on the pains and sorrows of separation.
It was produced by Steve Aoki (he also remixed Mic Drop), who wanted to do something completely unexpected with BTS, so they did this ballad. It was co-written by RM.

Here is the incredible vocal line of BTS. The song comes from an old folk tale, a sad one. A man is so ugly that he is rejected by the townspeople so has to live alone. He gardens, and grows a beautiful blue flower. A woman comes into the garden and picks the flower, and comes back every day when he is watching out the window. He falls in love, but is afraid to approach her because of his ugliness. Then she stops coming. He gathers his courage to find out why. A townsperson tells him she was very poor, and gathered the flowers to sell, but has died. It's a very sad song of love lost, with a back message of loving yourself and not hiding.
It's actually from a made-up story in the Bangtan Universe, not an old folk tale.

It can be ugly on the inside or the outside but to me it is like Beauty and the Beast. Love it! This was a stage mix, you can tell because their clothes change from the different performances. People seem to think they prevent copyright strikes. Not sure if it’s true, but worth a try. I get my lives from CZcams channel Enjoy BTS More because the subtitles are correct and good audio. Truth untold, HOUSE OF CARDS znd SPRING DAY are so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Whether its rap or a Ballad BTS makes the most emotional deep songsbof any band out there ....and there are just so many. Most great bands they may have 8 great songs and some nice music. There is a reason it's called the BTS Rabbit hole. The creativity from these 7 men seems limitless.

La canción hablaba sobre una leyenda/cuento sobre un hombre (no recuerdo si fue maldecido u algo), pero se consideraba tan feo que utilizab un máscara para cubrir su rostro (a pesar de que ni convivía con la sociedad), se la pasaba encerrado y su único pasatiempo era cuidar su jardín.
Luego descubrió que un mujer estaba robando sus flores (ella eta pobre y las vendía para sobrevivir).
La cuestión es que él termina enamorándose y decide crear una rosa especial para que ella pueda venderla cara y ya no sea pobre. También decidió mostrarse ante ella, pero entonces la mujer ya no apareció por su jardín (murió) y él nunca se le declaró ni le entregó la rosa...

Their individual voice's are outstanding and then they harmonise together which adds another level but they go another level and sing with their heart and soul. They do so in order to tell the story of the disfigured man who fell in love with the girl who came into his garden every evening to steal his flowers to sell the next day in order to buy food. A man too afraid to let anyone see him alone in the world due to his disfigured face. It's tell us no matter how we might see ourselves we must not hide away we are to live our lives to have courage love ourselves and not have regrets at the end of our lives due to hiding ourselves away.

Enjoyed the reaction. It is always interesting to see ones take on the meaning of their song. BTS music is like art. You may find that your thoughts may not be exactly what the artist is specially talking about ( especially if based on a story or book) but I originally thought it was more personal to them, to one of them till I heard Army;s comments. BTS is known for being transparent so it just stands to reason, and they put so much of their soul to singing it, it is believable. BTS is amazing at storytelling, well honestly amazing at what ever they lay their hands to. Full of passion, discipline, courage, transparent and they are so young for the wisdom they show. Blessings

The truly untold story;
Some argue that the smeraldo flower is just a myth, while others argue that it (the flower) is real because there is a sad story behind the flower.
Smeraldo means “emerald” in Italian. the meaning of the flower is “undisclosed intimacy/feelings”.
One day the flower girl and the duke will have an illegitimate child. The flower girl dies in childbirth, leaving the duke alone.
Both out of wedlock and because of the duke's wife, he wants to kill the child, but he can't. That's why he sent him to a far away place.
After the child grows up, he closes himself in the castle and hides his face with a mask. Because he finds himself ”ugly". He probably does not open his heart to anyone because of the loneliness he has experienced all his life.
Then things get good.
A state that will cause good memories in a corner of the man's mind.
A state that will leave a painful wound on your heart and make you cry until the springs of your eyes dry up.
One day a girl appeared in his garden. The girl was in a miserable state.
While the lonely and ugly man was watching her, the girl slowly climbed the wall and stole a flower.
The man was madly angry at first.
She was very angry with the girl for stealing her precious flowers.
He decided to spend the whole night awake and in the garden to guard his garden. However, as soon as he briefly fell asleep, the girl took some more flowers and ran away.
Who was that?
Why was he stealing her flowers every night?
Without realizing it, the man waited for the girl every night. And one night, he followed the girl.
The girl was selling the flowers she had collected. He was in a bad situation and needed money.
The man felt sorry for him and went back to his castle. He kept thinking about what he could do.
He was afraid that if he suddenly appeared in front of him, he would see his ugliness and walk away.
And suddenly something came to mind. He was going to do it. He was going to grow the most beautiful flower for the girl.
He locked himself in the castle and struggled to grow the flower. He tried to do it every day, every night, but it finally happened. He had finally grown the extinct Smeraldo flower.
He thought about giving the flower to the girl himself, but this idea scared him a lot. He was afraid that the girl would never come back.
And he planted the flower in the garden.
For days he waited for the girl to come, but she did not come. At last he could not stand it and put on his cloak and mask. He went down to the town.
He asked people, but found out that the girl had already died.
Her hands started shaking, she was scared, she was so scared.
The pain of being late wore him down. Maybe I should have confronted him, he thought.
If the man had courage, if he had shown himself and confessed his feelings, would everything have changed?
Of course.
Of course, the woman would get scared and run away.
He would even go crazy.
But courage is easier said than done.
‘The only thing I can do is to grow beautiful flowers just like you.’

They have lots of music about relationships. But yes, many are also about wider topics. This one in particular is about the importance of loving oneself to be able to move forward, which can relate to romantic relationships and many other things.

The only issue with this song in my opinion is that they didn't use the heavenly voice of Taehyung as much as they could have, his voive is for songs like these as it conveys so much feeling, that the others cannot match. Taehyung is soul.
You're right... I'm glad you said that. They should have used Taehyung more. His voice was perfect for this song but he was the hidden member for a long time, remember? And I think this song touched him more than the rest. He struggled with depression around that time (there was an interview during the LYTour) and he talked about it. He was sort of still hidden I think but he started to come out of it on that tour. His voice really is the soul. 🕊😇 💚🌹💜

I always enjoy watching your reaction. If you want to go deeper into the BTS story, please watch Rise of Bangtan. It is a fan made series of 21 episodes. Each episode is about 25-30 minutes long. It shows BTS from before they debuted. It also is a roller coaster of emotions from watching them share laughters among themselves to a great amount of tears. This is how you would understand their long road to success.
