I know it's a bit of a big ask but I'd love to see a teardown (or ideally an Inside Perspective) of a dimple lock. I...presume they're like a pin tumbler lock, but with the pins in a different orientation and that, while they're more novel and obscure, the smaller difference in height between the highest and lowest cuts makes them easier to pick.
@@gigabyte2248 Actually, the smaller differences (and the larger contact area with the key, meaning less wear) allows for much better precision in manufacturing, which makes them harder to pick. Okay, it makes them *potentially* harder to pick, based on the *assumption* that the manufacturer actually care about precision. I guess DOM locks will still give you good quality and tight tolerances. Unlike the lock demonstrated here. Heck, LPL didn't even bother to show us "that it's not a fluke"!
Wow, it sure took LPL a long time to pick his way out of the dungeon the lock makers had "secured" him in. Hope he is a little more careful when venturing out to preclude another kidnapping.

I can see the advantage of having a lock that would be destroyed by a low-skilled picker. If that happens, you know there has been an attack, and you would have to replace the lock. Which is usually better than the picker managing to open the lock. Of course, I would want a lock that can't be opened by a rake, so this lock is probably not good enough for that. But with improved tolerances, it might be.

@@psymar Most padlock type locks are there just to stop opportunity thieves and just stop people to wander in places where you don't want them to go. Like a bike lock, a drunk dude wont steal it, but he can take the next bike that isn't locked at all or gate lock in construction area where people might get hurt by just wandering there.
If the Indian company is watching and they really want to improve their products, now they know where to go... I think it's a fair trade: lockpicking = future lock improvements in the weak areas.

Now, your entire social circle (friends, family, neighbors, etc.) will call you for help everytime they're locked out. If you fail, you're branded as a faliure. If you pass, you're branded as a thief and responsible for every lock related incident that ever happened in your area.

Now I am responsible for all lock-related and computer-related incidents even if I'm far, far away. Hey LPL just wanted to say thank you. I recently opened my first double combination gun case my dad forgot the two codes to. Thanks to you and your videos it didn't take long to get it open 😁
@@darkee03 One side I was able to tension the release button and find the detents. The other side I ended up making a feeler from a soda can and found the detents. Took me about 15 minutes all in but I was happy when they both opened :)
Dear LPL, I just wanted to thank you for your educational videos. A couple of weeks ago my father passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in the night. When it came time to try to locate all the important paperwork and such, we discovered we couldn't find where he hid the backup key to his wall safe, and the keypad had the batteries dead. Thanks to your video i was able to open it for my mom with a piece of coat hanger. Without you this would have been a much bigger issue. Thank you again for being there in my time of need.
My best friend passed away, and I was able to easily get into his gun safe that was shipped to my house and was able to get his family important docs and other things. I probably could have picked it before I started watching LPL, but it definitely went faster than it would have otherwise.

LPL: I'm just going to gently rake the pins, and I'm going to use this long piece of metal to block the bottom of the keyway so the pins don't fall down. McNally: Here we have a Britannium armored shutter lock. To open it, we'll be using a turning tool and jiggle our dimple rake until something happens. You can tell something happened when your lock isn't like the way it was or is like how it wasn't. This poor guy doesn't have any branding, whoever made it didn't wan't to claim it. We're gonna rake it anyway. Up next we have a- *(5 locks open)* This is not a dimple lock. ...but it's getting the dimple rake. Usually I don't tell anyone, but this is a rectangle type horizontal beam steel padlock, and we're gonna open it using the dimple rake. You can tell this next lock is special by the way it looks. Can you guess how we're gonna open this Master Lock? That's right, we're gonna use our dimple rake to dimple rake it in the key hole. Moving on, I have a "smart" lock deadbolt from a brand called Smonet. Because this one's a door lock, I'm gonna need something like my dimple rake to get it open. This next one's actually a bit of a doozy. It's a Whale security lock from Japan, and has pins going in three directions. For this one, I'm going to use my dimple rake and then take it out, turn it around and then use my dimple rake. And just like that, we've got it open.

You prove the old saying about locks are there to keep honest people honest! I have been asked a few times to open locks for the owners due to unforeseen reasons, and I have been successful, thanks to your videos! In one instance, it caused the owner to get a new lock, as the old one was so easily opened!
"Incorrectly" picking the lock to deliberately make it non-functional could be a valid objective. You won't be able to non-destructively open or remove the lock - but nobody else (including the owner) could do it either. The same idea as breaking the key inside the lock or pouring glue into it.

Too funny, I just contacted support at CI because I dropped the pins in one of my lock trainer locks, panicked and stretched a spring. They are awesome with their customer support. I will keep supporting this channel and the CI shop... I just hope I don't have to buy things twice... you know, to prove the purchase wasn't a fluke.

I'd be very interested in a video that goes over the differences in lock markets around the world, especially India. Like, why does it seem that Indian lock-makers do things so differently, and apparently don't feel the need to export? Why hasn't that happened everywhere?

Let me get this right ... a triple-sided 9-pinned dimple lock, a worry that we could seriously mess the lock up, a 3-minute video ... raked in 10 seconds, opened in 4. Oh my. Better off with a load of cable ties.
Yup, that 'pins falling into the hole' thing caught me just once (so far) - jammed the lock in the 'half-way round' position. In a 'normal' pin-tumbler, it's not that hard to get out of trouble, but yeah, good tip right there.
I've never seen it, but I'm pretty sure I can visualize it. I'm also sure someone will be quick to correct me if I'm wrong. ;) When you think about a lock with a key in it, the key is what is pushing all the bottom pins into place lining up the top pins along the shear line, so the lock can open. When you pick a lock there is no key, so the only thing keeping the bottom pins in place is friction(or a turning tool in the keyway). If the pins are loose enough, and nothing is blocking them, the bottom pin can just fall out of its channel into the keyway, and then you have a lock that can't be opened 'cause there is nothing for the key to push against to align the pins across the shear line.

He was narrating, that takes time while you are already doing something. He also was testing tolerances and sending emails to lock companies
He was playing Baldur's Gate with his kids and showing how the lock still opens when you roll a 1.

What took the most time was the paperwork. He pick all 132 locks in 22 hours, but well goverment so the paperwork took 360 hours.

If the pins are loose enough, and nothing is blocking them, the bottom pin can just fall out of its channel into the keyway, and then you have a lock that can't be opened 'cause there is nothing for the key to push against to align the pins across the shear line.
It's the driver pins that can fall into the keyway while you rotate the core and the bottom of the keyway arrives over the driver pins.

I learned about the Schlage traps picking a lock the wrong way, luckily it was one being replaced with a mul-t-lock so it was no longer in use.
