3 years later and this is still some of the most meaningful insight you've shared Frank. What I've noticed more and more as the root issue surrounding my peer group is that nowadays far too many people are on autopilot as it were (and we're still all pretty relatively young too).
That lack of self-awareness, or any conscious participation in your life on what you take in or what you put out, I've seen it affect those around me on a molecular level. That sort of stereotypical "I'm not happy but I won't allow myself to sit with or reflect on those feelings long enough to even realize it" malaise of casual discontent, masking a deeper depression. It can be very difficult to shake people out of.

I finally found someone like me, male version. It is amazing to hear all the things you talk about in this video alone that is 100% me. When I try and talk to other people about this sort of thing they never speak to me again. I'm understanding myself better and the very small % of us... I finally don't feel alone for the first time in my life since 2nd grade knowing/feeling I was different. Thank you for your videos.

This is probably the most important message I've ever heard you make. Curate what you put into your brain. I've met some young folk from the UK and as a sort of boost they'll show people some of the most grotesque things and if you react to it you're not cool. Apparently and I'm like, no. You shouldn't watch this stuff not because you're weak, but because it is bad for you.

I don't have a tv so I'm not confronted to those news channels that like to make everthing so dramatic. My parents watch it a lot and I can see how it shapes their view of the world. I used to be so similar to them and now it sometime feels like we live on different planets.

There is a lot of entertainment my husband, children and I don’t watch anymore because it glorifies behaviors we don’t want to instill in our children. We don’t want messages of promiscuity or witchcraft in our home. We mainly listen to Christian music. I do need to be more active physically and pay attention to what I’m eating. This is a pretty accurate description of why I avoid corporate media and obtain most of my news from sources like David Pakman, who is completely transparent about his own bias where it exists and has actual, legitimate criticism of people on both sides of the aisle where relevant.
I don't think it's necessarily constructive to ignore /all/ news or anything, but I do think it's important to be picky about whose commentary you relate to and find authenticity in. Acknowledging that a specific source shares your bias and accepting that on your own terms is really a powerful thing. It's important to be informed for sure, but it's also important to know what bias is going to be inherent in your choice of information.

    Hi!
Paranoia in a relationship is not exclusive to INFJs. I´m INFP and I seem to always be waiting for that moment when something will drop or crack; not sure if it has anything to do with MBTI or just my own past experience, but as I have acknowledged this trend, I´m trying to consciously trust more and it´s kinda scary, but it´s also healthier, I think. Nothing is perfect, after all.
I agree with FJ on feeding our brain with positive information, we need to be critical and responsible about the materials we chose to construct out ideas, perceptions, and emotions with. There is a book I really love by Austin Kleon titled ¨Steal like an Artist¨, there, he explains this simple and sort of obvious idea proposed by Pablo Picasso: ¨Good artists copy, great artists steal.¨ And that basically means that our creative output is made up of all the things that surround us, but this of course, applies to any field, not only creativity...
I´m publicist and it is true that it is mostly vain and manipulative. I mean, there are so many little tricks, data, and tools to permeate someone’s life on a regular day journey at touchpoints in such subtle ways and just mess with their perception of the world and have them vote for Two Typed Timmy for president or buy a teeth whitening paste to sooth your fear of public speaking... I´ve sat through meetings showing the next campaign for making kids but BBQ flavored cookies by dressing up as hot dogs and competing on social media... (not that it´s not funny or entertaining) but, what are we constructing, what is this sowing on society? IDK really...

I use facebook for a group I am in. I went through and unfollowed everything but that group. My husband did the same. Now I noticed the ads more. for every 3 posts I get ads on makeup, clothes, weightloss, hair removal etc. My husband gets an ad every 20 posts about cars, engineering and education. It upsets me that I am being bombarded with things to do with body image and he gets things to do with self growth. Furthering on from that, I see it on TV or magazines, people walking down the street, telling me what I need to do to fit in, and be a successful woman in the world... be attractive etc. My husband is getting the same message, that beautiful women do certain things, and dress certain ways. I do not work. I have a house to run with 4 kids. I dont want to waste time, money and energy on trying to fit in with the beauty standards. My husband gives me more attention when I dress up and wear makeup, and this is the sad truth of the world. Not to long ago he should me a fa post about bra clip size is equivalent to the prize size... once again putting a woman worth on her body. Heaven forbid we do the same with a mans package size, but no, men are seen as a whole. AND Dont get me started on adult films and brainwashing.

I really appreciate you speaking about this topic. I believe it is crucial for each one of us to take charge of our lives and gain responsibility for what we do on a daily basis. However, I must disagree with your take on the news. I agree that there is a lot of sensationalist news transmitted to the public which add nothing. They are not worthy of our time simply because they do not teach us anything new of importance, they only take time from our day.
But not all newspapers produce meaningless content. I think the media is most often portrayed as manipulative, which isn't always a lie. Even so, there is a lot more to it! We can choose which news we consume and dedicate time to. Instead of choosing to be an avid reader of, let's say, tabloid journalism, we can redirect our attention to news we find meaningful and relevant to the functioning of today's society. And I do believe that there are quality newspapers out there (even if they're not the ones that sell the most) which inform us in a critical and intelligent way about what's happening in the world. Let's not forget why news are important - they provide us with an in-depth analysis of society. History is being made right at our fingertips! I also feel like neglecting the news makes me more of a passive citizen rather than an active one.
The amount of information that is out there can be overwhelming, but if we make an effort to filter it and feed our brain with the stuff that matters, we can enrich ourselves.
ps. I am not advocating that people should read the news even if that's hurting them, their mental health is way more important. But this is how I personally feel about the value of news, I don't think they should solely be labeled as "negative" and ignored; they can serve us if we know how to take advantage of them!

Very true. My subconscious god must be at play because i didn’t intend to end up in this page. I actually thought this was going to be a repetitive audio program. After reading hi let’s brave new world. A documentary on the schooling system in history. How it was used to condition children for work. After someone brought up the topic of how pink is not actually pink but what society says is so. After thinking about how girls are bought irons and dolls as gifts when they younger to condition them to be obedient to men. After I remember myself actually liking teddies as a kid but being against it as a got older cause “I was a boy”. After coming home from work with the radio on with it blaring with non stop Christmas songs and adverts, as if I should be happy because it’s a specific month. After speaking with a colleague about how he should rethink whether he comes to work for money or whether he comes to work cause that ms they he’s programmed. After countless documentaries on various topics. Perhaps also attributed to working in IT and developing an understanding of programs that are like into the brain and recently artificial intelligence. It’s then that I suddenly clicked that I was living in a social construct. Shut that only took 27 years of my life. To be fair; I didn’t really start thinking after 18 and then only completely segregated media influence about 7 years back. This is what it must take to realise you’ve been living In a box.

    Hey, Frank.
This makes complete sense, and it actually sounds similar to what I was taught growing up. The ideas of guarding your heart and your mind and consuming things of an edifying nature.
I love music and movies, but one thing that always blows my mind is when people listen to songs they love but have no clue what the lyrics are or what they mean.
It's not like I know the meaning behind every song. Many times the artist leaves it up to audience interpretation, but I just find it kind of scary the idea of letting someone else drive that thought train without questioning it. Same for movies.
Don't get me wrong, I'll take a song without real substance that happens to have an infectious beat from time to time, but for the most part I enjoy digging for meaning. I think it helps me to be more conscious.
Do you set limits for yourself when it comes to TV time or maybe what you're listening to?

Being passive and consuming useless news, celebrity lives, mainstream media was the horrible thing I did to myself. It made me lose my personal identity , passions and morals.
One really has to brainwash themselves in order to set your faculties free from realm of hatred and materialism to create something meaningful for yourself .
Sensory overload drains us more than we realize. As you will remove yourself from mainstream news and media , it becomes harder to talk to friends and family who've chosen to remain passive. You will feel this urge to get back to the feeding spiral of social media ( for me). Don't give up, stay vigilant . You will eventually find people who are on the same path . I am working on this path. It's tough but ultimately self satisfying to know you are on the pursuit of betterment.

Two years ago I felt that my emotional state was negatively affected by all of the bad news through media, so I had to limit my intake of news. Although I seldomly check the news these days the important news somehow find their way to me anyway. It can be either through background noise or when talking to other people.

This is all so true. I used to consume a lot of news because it was what my parents did. It was a frequent topic of conversation in the house. Since I’ve been on my own, I’ve largely stopped paying attention. I realized the news was not helping me develop empathy for people that have different viewpoints from me. I could see my parents were spending most of their day making fun of people who view the world differently. Even though I mostly still agree with on the big issues, I don’t think that’s a healthy way to orient your brain. I still pay attention to some news, but in general basically all of my entertainment choices the past few years have been with the purpose of developing empathy and understanding for all different kinds of people. I feel like I’m in a much healthier place now as a result.

Aww man, I gotta give up my oatmeal pie?? 😜😂 So true, all that stuff! I would hope that everyone when they get to a certain age, would reach that realization. Although nowadays, it's getting harder the more bombarded we are. Ugh!👍💜

Great video! One elder where we worship put it this way, “What you take in effects how you think, how you think effects how you feel, and how you feel effects what you DO.”
This thought was based on 1 Corinthians 15:33 “Bad association spoils useful habits.”
Thank you so much for making valuable content that helps us to be better people!

I think we tend to consume what reinforces our biases and attitudes. Consuming things which challenge our cognitive schemas can be stressful and certainly unpleasant and ultimately further entrenches us in our mindset. Nature documentaries are good, always. 😂 Retirement is tough. Hobbies are necessary to divert our attention from bullshit.

Life is more difficult, but then again one needs to adjust or customize choices of living lifestyle to the best interest. And this way maybe one will be happier.

Interesting video ! And I guess the same goes with people. If you're surrounded by people that always confronts you to what you dislike or disapprove, it's actually hard to follow your "position" and, if so, a certain positivity or a certain mindset you'd like to keep.

I think you should have a conversation with yourself about truth and how you view yourself in the world. You'll have to do much more if you want to do what's right. Take time for yourself, hang on, you have to go deep. Be the best person you can be Frank James, your power will be yours.

Frank James, you speak the TRUTH! I don't even notice it anymore, but media still plays a HUGE role in my life, with Instagram impacting me the most. I think I need to do a purge of my Instagram and unfollow anything that is toxic.

A friend of mine recently gave me a fridge magnet that said ‘this is your world - shape it or someone else will’. Your post just reminded me of this again - not just about shaping my own world, but thinking about what I let into it in the first place. I’ve got a bad habit of being a bit of an emotional sponge and guess I need to start soaking up the good stuff for a change. Thanks Frank!

Hell yeah. I love this video. I have been trying to articulate this to so many people and it just doesn’t get through to most people. They just take what I’m saying as some hippy new age concepts but they don’t actually see the root of what I’m saying. I’m grateful for people like you and in this comment section who also feel this way.
