AC Troubleshooting Low Superheat

  • I am testing a new ac condenser. I noticed that the suction pressure and suction pipe temperature are low. The suction pipe temperature drops down to low 30°s which is close to freezing up. Therefore I go inside to verify, airflow. I noticed that both filters are plugged. Once I pull the dirty filters out of the system the suction pipe starts warming up. The Evaporator gaining heat causes the refrigerant to boil off and superheat back into a vapor. The system Superheat rises up to 16°. This video shows how low airflow from dirty filter affects an air-conditioning system operation. Low Superheat means that liquid refrigerant is flooding back to the compressor. The compressor supposed to pump gas or vapor only.

    Have a great vacation hacker! We all need a break sometime. It’s funny how some folks out there think HVAC is all about changing filters, capacitors, you know the EASY stuff….they have no clue. Enjoy man see ya soon 👍

    Sorry to say, but that was a rookie mistake. After 37 yrs. I learned to always check the filter first. When I attended a training session at Carrier in Syracuse, they wanted us to give the system 15 minutes before adjusting the charge.

    I currently have a low superheat problem at home. My suction line remains 1.3 SH with 158.1psi and 55.4 VSAT while the other side is at 2.2 SC with 293.5psi and 94.3 LSAT. The thermostat reading no lower than 72° in the house.. The AC company made me pay for 3 lbs of freon last Dec to get Superheat to 14 claiming that my compressor had lost some freon over time, and that there had to be a leak. So, he wanted to charge me for a leak test which I declined. A new tech from the same company now comes and said that there is too much freon in there and that's causing my now too low superheat reading. He said tha a leak was impssible with the pressure staying this high 158.1psi. Sooo I'm like hmmm...🤔🤔🤔
    The unit had suddenly stopped cooling which caused me to call them in again. But, it appeard that after I hosed down the condenser fins it started cooling again. At no time was there any frost on my evap coils before or after it stopped cooling.
    Anyone with any suspicion of what's up with the system, please break silence.

      sounds like a weak compressor. High vapor saturation means that it isnt absorbing heat correctly which isnt dehumidifying efficienctly. between 40-45 sat temp is the best

  • @hediervarelamedina987

    the video is respectable , but when an AC system is being inspected it is important to check the condition of the condenser , evaporator , evaporator fan motors , and condenser fan motors before making measurements . return filters, ducts and speed of the evaporator fan motor. to really determine what is going on. Why make such measurements and equipment saturated with dust is not recommended. Do these tests and have the filters dirty because they are not going to give the conditions. First, you should have verified how the filters were. return to the thermal jump that I did not see. and it is important. For the most part, the video is respectable.

    Great video. Isn't 3 degrees of subcooling low? Even with the blocked filters I would think a properly charged system would have higher subcooling.

    • @Crazywill210
      @Crazywill210 Před 3 lety +2

      Depends on the metering device. Piston charge by SH and TXV charge by SC

    • @williamserver4332
      @williamserver4332 Před 3 lety +3

      @@Crazywill210 I know that but even with a txv an overcharged system will have high SC and an undercharged system will have low SC. The TXV controls SH. I don't see a lot of Lennox systems in my area and nothing I work on requires a 3 degree SC. They are usually between 8 and 15

      Inverter units are nice. You will save money while unit is under warranty. I doubt they will last as long as the older units. Parts will be expensive after warranty. Also as stated parts most likely will need to be order when they fail.
