    We are Linnea and Akela. In May, 2020 I purchased our 2016 Ram ProMaster, Togo, to become our full-time home. With this van build, I am using my stubbornness and drive to show individuals that they, too, can convert a campervan BY THEMSELVES and ON A BUDGET, with a lot of learning, rolling up the sleeves, and getting to work.
    Our goal here is to inspire individuals to chase their dreams. To break from societal limitations and live the life they truly desire. And, to GET OUTSIDE!

    Just a word to those who install their own solar! I live in Tasmania Australia and a camping trailer( they call them caravans here) was traveling down the highway and their solar panels came off and caused an accident killed three people in the car behind them! Don’t rely on just tape! Linnea has been very wise to attach with screws as well and also consulted with a friend who is an installer builder to get more advice. Good on you Linnea. Hi AKELA!
    Please make sure you have things secured...so no one else has to loose their lives!

      People only tape their panels on? Holy shit. :o
      One thing people might want to consider when attaching panels to the roof is that contact between aluminium and steel can cause corrosion in certain environments. Someone with more experience with metals might want to chime in on this, as I am no expert.

      I would also add that it's a good idea to use lock nuts on the panel mounts. I used the standard nuts and lock washers and noticed a screw and nut laying on top of my van one day and found that it had vibrated loose on the panel bracket. I took everything down and changed all of my nuts to lock nuts.

    This panel can put out close to 100 watts czcams.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

    You screwing that buss into your battery box reminded me of when I worked for the phone company. One of the guys installed an emergency phone in an elevator and when he closed the elevator doors, the screws gouged the stainless steel door on that side. Very expensive install for the phone company that day. Thousands of dollars to replace that door. It reminded me to pay attention not only if I ever installed a phone in an elevator, but to be careful installing a phone set on a wall in case there was a pocket door. Something phone techs don't deal with much anymore residentially.

    It is very impressive how you are learning on the fly. Now that you are a pro at wiring you should also sound like one. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. That is simply the size of the wire, the diameter. To say 14 AWG you simply say 14 gauge. I have enjoyed watching your van build. You should be very proud of yourself.

  • @CihaPet
    @CihaPet Před rokem +2

    I've been loving watching you build out your van. Your can-do attitude and resourcefulness really gives your videos an awesome energy. I'm very comfortable dealing with basic wiring (DC more-so than AC), but solar and charging and all that is a bit more unnerving to me. I believe I feel the same anxiety that you've mentioned with wanting to do it correctly/etc. So, I am definitely VERY appreciative of this video series. You go, girl! 🙂

  • @markeddy8731
    @markeddy8731 Před 3 lety +1

    AWG = American wire gauge. You would refer to the cables as being 4 gauge and the terminals as being 4 & 10 gauge terminals. Very inspiring video and you did a great job. TKS for your time and sharing.

    Really awesome how you are figuring things out! As you grow the power of your system it always helps to add cut off switches between your components so you can swap/repair stuff, like a switch between solar panels and MPPT, a switch between your battery and everything else, etc. And a multimeter kit can really help you diagnose any problems. Super cool work!!!

I would shorten the solar panel cables ( storing the cables in the way you did could make a magnetic field and that could damage your 12 Volt DC system) I do not know what you do to pay the bills ,but I think you have the ability to do anything you want to do. Which is a great thing to have , it will help you in life.

    very well done!. one thing I noticed that concerned me was the last power connection between the battery and inverter was at the battery. in my earlier days as a mechanic I had a bad connection inside a battery...very rare occasion...and when the positive cable was reconnected the battery literally exploded and know florescent light tubes out of fixtures above me and my boss that were on the ceiling 20' high. when I can I always make my last connection at the inverter away from the battery. that way I'm not looking right down over the top of something that might explode... and please use eye protection especially with electricity. safety glasses at least. young lady you are really quite something else... great work and research.

    Quick point. 4 awg is said " 4 -A,W, G "
    an acronym for A=American W=wire G=gauge
    Also, connect your inverter to the buss bar(s). Wired straight to the battery it isn't fused

    Why the hell did i get emotional when it all came tougher?? It's like watching one of my kids succeed at a difficult task. Way to go Linnea!! Be very proud of what you accomplished since purchasing the van and taking the time to show people everything that has to be done to have a successful van build. As usual, great job!
