Mood ambience sounds occur based on a "mood" percent value between 0-100. The mood increases when the player is in a cave or in a dark place, and decreases otherwise. When the mood reaches 100%, one of the sounds plays randomly, resetting the mood to 0% and thus restarting the cycle. The darker it is, and the more non-transparent blocks there are, the quicker the mood increases. in Java Edition, the current mood value appears on the debug screen.
This is the simplified algorithm for computing this value in pseudocode:

This method is called once every tick. It selects a random block in a 17×17×17 area centered around the player's eye position, and alters the mood value accordingly:
* If the selected block has sky light, it decreases the mood by 1⁄1000 per sky light level.
* If it has a block light level above 1, it decreases the mood value by (block light level - 1)⁄6000.
* If the block light level is 0, it increases the mood value by 1⁄6000.
* This means that if you are in complete darkness and there are no lit blocks around you, an ambient noise will play every 6000 ticks (5 minutes).
Since non-transparent blocks are considered to have a sky and block light level of 0, the mood value increases especially fast if you're in a cave.

@@amberhawksong It didn't exist back then. It was added in 1.16. Before 1.16, they just played randomly in places where the light level is 0. They could also be played at different pitches.
Tempest saying "what is that sound" and then looking back at a dark cave with low resolution has to be one of the most scariest things i've seen in minecraft

They might happen above ground if there's a cave nearby or something similar to a cave nearby. The game checks for if you're in a cave by tracking light levels near you. If they're similar to that of a cave or cave system, you get creepy sounds.

Fact: Minecraft has many cave sounds, which represents it's past. There is a sound where there is a moving rail. This shows that the carts sounds still last long through echoes. Echoes last long as long as it is in an area where it is closed and spacious. The sound just probably passed through the caves or came out from cave openings. If you hear any cave noise, there is probably a good chance you will find a cave or more rare, and abandoned mineshaft or even a stronghold.

@@MOH-ph3qm Before 1.16, they meant there was an area with a light level of 0 near you, which caves usually have. They also actually came from the dark areas instead of always being played near you.
Also, I dislike the mood system. I prefer how the cave sounds worked before.
fun fact: the cave sounds can appear anywhere, its based on a meter that increases faster the more in the dark you are, when the meter reaches 100 a random cave sound will play. then the meter will be reset.

I love the cave sounds, it's those features that have been in the game unchanged since alpha/beta and while it scares people shitless nowdays i just feel nostalgic hearing them. Especially the angellic humming and rail sounds.
Massive respect for mojang keeping them in the game they definitely add an aspect of horror and the deep dark adds to that, i honestly think horror works in every medium even if it's a little, just the spice for the dish.
