my sugession and commentary on this production and what could have been weel done in the film betrayal in the city by Maseno University
The direction of the film of the play Betrayal in the city by Francis Imbuga is really demanding. The standard is the production was mediocre. The production was way below the standards given that this is a university product compared to the secondary schools which have also done such theatre. If I was the director of the production, I would put several things in place.
First, the selection of the cast is the first and foremost step in any theatrical work. The cast in that production were not appropriate in the roles given to them. For example the role given to Nina, late Adika’s mother was not well selected. The age of Nina was not displayed well in the dress and language that she used. As the director I would pick on a cast who could role play that part well. This is just to mention one for illustration.
Secondly, the costume by the cast was wanting. For an old man, the clothing was wanting. They did not depict him as really old. The tattered clothes just showed how poor and suffering he was. The costumes of the Askaris, Jere and Mulili were also not up to the standards. A blue or patched clad could at least show that these two are police officers who have come to maintain law and order or carry out their duties.
In as much as the director adapted the play to fit his available resources and the time provided, the pace of the play was dragging. The characters had many unnecessary narrations to give at the expense the content of the book. This may have arisen from the director’s failure to make sure that the cast knows their lines well without beating around the bush to pass their message.
The lighting was also wanting in the drama. The characters were not well seen on screen. The director should have improved the lights. It remained red from the beginning to the end. Even when the Boss was removed from his seat as the head of Kafira, the lights did not change. This translates that the red light wasn’t symbolic at all. As a director, the lighting should be used to communicate to the audience about the content and mood of the play
Lastly, the camera and recording personnel did not do their work well. The voices and also images are blurred in the film. As a director, this should never happen. The audience is really straining to hear what the characters are saying. This is the failure of the director. If I was the director of this film, I would choose on a video recorder who is specialised and can do their work perfectly. This stage alone can spoil the rest of the production, and actually, in my opinion, the video shooting has critically and significantly contributed to this sub standard production
Conclusion
In a nutshell, the production of Maseno University is way far in becoming any standard, a lot needed to be done especially on the director and producers side.

Mulili study your lines and give meaning to them, don't change English that is used. The lines are comical so don't put much comedy you are exaggerating too much!
