    BABYMETAL【SU-METAL (Vocal,Dance) / YUIMETAL (Scream,Dance) / MOAMETAL (Scream,Dance) 】
Formed in 2010. Their major debut single “ Ijme, dame, zettai" along with 2nd single “Megistune" both ranked in the Top 10 Oricon chart in Japan. In March 2014, they took to the stage of Nippon Budokan for a 2-Days gig making them the youngest female act to ever perform there. Their 1st studio album BAYBMETAL made it into the US Billboard chart. In summer of the same year, they embarked on their first World Tour, performing on the Main Stage at UK’s prodigious festival Sonisphere Festival 2014 in front of 65,000 festival goers, and supporting Lady Gaga on her “ArtRave: The Artpop Ball” 2014 Tour. In fall they were back for additional headline shows in Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City and O2 Academy Brixton, London. In January 2015, they headlined a show at the 20,000 capacities Saitama Super Arena, and in June 2015, they headlined a show at the 25,000 capacities Makuhari Messe. In summer of 2015, BABYMETAL received awards from prominent UK music magazines “Kerrang!” and “METAL HAMMER”. They then performed in front of a staggering 90,000 people at the prestigious Reading and Leeds Festival in August. This December, BABYMETAL are to take the stage again for 2 consecutive days at Japan’s Yokohama Arena pulling a total of 26,000 people before returning to the UK in April 2016 to headline London’s The SSE Arena, Wembley. BABYMETAL's ‘Metal Resistance’ is rapidly expanding across the globe.

They’ve had two little concerts before Sonisphere though. One in Cologne and the other in Paris, but it was the same tour. You can find videos here on CZcams. Those were very small concerts with like a few hundred people in small venues, but they were sold out and the crowd knew everything about the show, like the „kiero“ in Headbanger :)
I don’t really think that they were totally and completely unknown to the 50.000 plus people, most of them maybe have already heard about them and now they were just curious.

OK, some background. The song title actually means "No More, Bullying, Forever". It was the ending song at this show, where they managed to turn an epic FAIL into an epic victory.
    - This was their first tour outside of Japan, and their first UK show
    - They booked a small stage but, for an unknown reason, they were moved to the main stage at the last minute. Instead of 3-5 thousand of their loyal fans they faced 30-50 thousand (?) trve metalheads.
    - This was a crowd waiting for Ghost, Deftones, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden. 90% of them knew absolutely nothing about BM.
    - BM released their debut album just a few months before. All the above mentioned bands had several albums and decades of history behind them.
    - They were girls between 14-16, all their songs had backing tracks, they sang not in English (the only other metal band that could get away with it recently was Rammstein). The backing band was made up of session musicians. The girls were singing about chocolate, and they were playing hide and seek on the stage, literally. They already had their own made up religion about the Fox God, and their hand sign was mocking the devil's horns.
    - This was NOT metal at all. They were nobodies and they didn't belong on the main stage of a metal festival. But, they knew it well, and they expected to get booed and bottled. There's a backstage photo of the girls before the show and their faces read "WE ARE F*CKED" And they went on the stage and Yui's hoodie got stuck in her hair, Moa's headset did not work and she missed the opening moves of the choreo. There was a close up of Yui's face on the projector screen at this moment, she saw what was happening, and for a moment her expression was like "ok, forget it, NOW we are f*cked..."
    - You can see in your video that Yui's skirt also started to fall apart at the last song, IDZ.
    - So what else happened? The crowd got a taste of the band at the soundcheck and they loved it. Then there was an epic (or ridiculous ?) Star-Wars style video intro showed on the screen. The first song started and 30 seconds later there were moshpits forming. In the next song, Gimme Chocco, there was a call-and-respond where Su effortlessly made the crowd sing the chorus in Japanese. Next came the solos and everybody shat themselves. Then the song titled Catch Me If You Can, then their women-empowering song, and then the ending song you saw. The biggest circle pits and WOD's of the festival.
    - Everybody was talking about them, and their T-shirts were top sellers even two days later.
    - If there's an epic entrance to the genre, this is it.

      @Soufriere84 Před 6 lety +509

Wow. Your explanation of the details of this day just makes the whole spectacle even more insanely awesome. I knew this was their first gig outside Asia and it was a minor miracle they won over the trve metalheads in that crowd, but I had no idea about all the logistical & technical snafus.
Couple quibbles: One, "backing track" implies miming. Suzuka does not lipsynch; that's easily proven in videos of live shows where her mic cuts out and you can still (barely) hear her singing. As time has gone on, they've done more and more of the music live. All they lack is a keyboardist. Yui & Moa do lipsynch sometimes because it's all but impossible for them to sing while doing those hyper dance moves.
Two, the Kami Band are and were more than just session musicians -- a term I feel has a undeserved bad rap -- all of them are veterans of Japan's underground metal scene.

Yes, you can see a lot of this happening on the fan cam compilation of the entire set. The tide started to turn from the middle of gimme chocco and then during Catch me, u can see it on Su's face, "We got em" and it was like flicking on a light switch. The crowd never had a chance from that point forward, when Su decides that she is going to crush, she crushes!

@@ghomsdominion7983 But a couple things to remember is that back in 2014 their English was not as good as it is nowadays 7 years later, most of their interviews had a translator off to the side translating what was being asked and they would respond back in Japanese. There is a very good chance that they literally did not understand the audience request. Also their concerts are far more rigidly scripted than other western bands, and I don't mean that in a bad way it's just cultural differences. They can't just decide on the fly to perform another song, they would have been told ahead of time how many songs to perform and then that's it.

I believe that haters on these young girls are simply afraid of change, there is nothing wrong with change, it's also called... progress, development, evolution.... and there is nothing wrong with that and nothing to be scared of. If it challenges your comfort zone and what you already love, don't discard it. Metal is all about challenge, standing up for yourself and not giving 2 shits what anyone else thinks about the music you like, the clothes you wear or the length of your hair. These girls embody that.

I just want to say something to the haters. It seems like a lot of you are old metalheads that love to say "this isn't metal." You know what's metal? Three young ladies that know they get a lot of hate from the metal community (especially back in '14) and say "Fuck it. We're gonna go play a metal festival in England." England, one of the most hardcore metal countries in the world. They knew most people had no idea who they were. They knew a large chunk that did know had already decided to hate them on just appearance and name. Those girls didn't give a fuck. They were going to walk out on that stage and rock 50,000 motherfuckers. There were salty metalheads in that crowd ready to start hurling bottles if they didn't like what they heard but by the end of their set Babymetal had won the crowd over. A lot of those metalheads went home and watched their videos, bought their cd and became fans. That's metal.
If you're some old metalhead clinging on to your Slayer and Megadeth CD's you've had for the last 30 years, you lost your metal edge a long time ago. When you say stuff like "that's not metal" you're the equivalent of some old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn. I'm an old metalhead too. I still have my old Megadeth and Pantera CDs. I still listen to them sometimes. I also listen to a lot of stuff that isn't 30 years old, including Babymetal. It's not the old metal I listened to back in the 80's and 90's but it is metal and it is good. My advice to you, don't be that old man.

couldn't agree more with ur explanation.. if BM was really bad, big portion of the crowd starts throwing anything on their hands and boo them.. but instead, u can see the crowds was enjoying it. When I first look at the live video, I'm surprised to look at the crowds going crazy.. later when I heard the instrumental version, the music is indeed metal though it is not at the level of the legends.. well of course.. u can't compare new band with the legends.. it takes another legend to beat a legend

    • @tawnkuimi-uru7212
      @tawnkuimi-uru7212 Před 7 lety +83

In time, my friend...in time. Yet, when you consider the fact that Babymetal has already performed in venues and situations that give them an unprecedented start for becoming legends, there is a good case to be made that they are legends in the making already. And the most astonishing fact of all is that they are all still so very young. For heaven's sake, most truly gifted performers toil for years upon years, well into their late twenties at best, before they come close to achieving what Babymetal has done in just six years. No group so young has ever sold out not only Wembley Arena, but the Tokyo Dome as well. Never before has a Japanese group, singing in Japanese, performed live on US television. The list of ground breaking achievements goes on and on for Babymetal. Yes, I am biased, yet I honestly believe we are witnessing the birth of true musical legends.

For the first couple of songs, they look so uptight and unsure of whether they've made the right call, but the girls are like 14 and just ready to kick ass, and the crowd loves it. That it ends with 60k people chanting WE WANT MORE, WE WANT MORE, it's lone of the greatest sets I've ever seen.

This amazing band opened My door to another world, Japanese Rock, wow, i don't understand a word but now I'm a fan of Scandal, Band Maid, D Drive, Iron Bunny, and don't get Me started on the fantastic Wagakki Band... So all I can say is Arigatou Gozaimasu to BabyMetal, You like all the other bands are Suge. ( see, I am learning some Japanese ). Stay safe and stay well Kev....Keep on Rocking

Momo has slotted in extremely well too. All I want now is to finally see them live, just once, getting a ticket for their Japan shows is nigh on impossible due to the ridiculous lengths you're forced to go to just to put your name into a lottery draw.

I'm 64. I found BM in 2016 and Loved them. I hate American pop and rap. BM got me to listen to Japanese rock and metal. What has always impressed me as they are humble and work so hard. Not like pop divas. People say they are a gimmick. Then so is Alice Cooper, GWAR, Kiss, and many others. IDZ hit me hard when I read the lyrics. Being bullied all my life the lyrics spoke to me.

My favorite part of this performance is how Su on each chorus cant contain her reaction to the crowd falling in love with them. She comments on this on an interview, shes seeing the entire sea of people grow their response, and by the end shes giving everything she has. Feeding off each other, pure reciprocation. Can't keep the death glare anymore and then just goes for it, and nails it. The little smirk at start of verse 2 is so cheeky watch her expression from 2:25 to 2:32 she decides then and there to let it all go. Absolute joy in her eyes as the crowd is roaring at 2:48 Incredible moments, one of her very best performances. The death glare never comes back either. Just the happiest expression and maximum effort to feel the moment. When a professional singer is that moved, its magic. Barely able to contain her smile, which never leaves the entire last half of the song. Suzuka was shining through the Su-metal facade, especially the tone of her voice, she SOUNDS happy.
