I prefer the grounded, semi-flying version like in Mario Kart 7 as it can hit all players in its way. And to be honest, I really like this item, not only its sound but also the extreme speed it flies past other drivers. :D
Ganondorf That is the exact reason I don't like the grounded one. It is supposed to hit first place but if you are in the way of it, theres no time to react.
pr44 Yea but that's the purpose of the blue shell. It should help the players who are behind. If it only hits the first, then the others can catch up. But so it really helps you because *all* the players in its way are being hit.

The ones from DD, DS, and W are considered the Flying Blue Shell. In 64, SS, 7, 8, and DX, they are called Crashing Blue Shells.

I'd say Mario Kart 8's Blue Shell is like a hybrid of those from past games. It goes along the ground until it gets near first, at which point it rises and starts flying after the leader.
To be honest, the blue shell is my favorite item in Mario Kart. It adds a lot of fun and variety to the races because you never know who will eventually be in the first place and if one player stays first throughout the race.
Furthermore, I like the sound when it dashes at cyberspeed past other players, especially where it strikes through them like in Mario Kart 7 & 8. A mighty item which eliminates every obstacle in its path. Not to mention the explosion on the leading place, hitting all nearby players. I like that :)
Man, I just love this item since it first appeared in MK 64.

I hate the Blue Shell in Mario Kart DS, sometimes they attack the 2nd place driver.
not to mention the red shells are so smart, you'd think there's still a koopa inside. The things will make a freakin' u turn if they overshoot, and will go for the sides of your kart if you drag an item. I'd feel a need for vengeance too if my bretheren were killed as ammunition for a kart race.

If you suddenly became 2nd and a blue shell was launched before you became second, it will hit you, since they programmed it to track first place even if they went down the leader board. But the shells were smart in ds, like spindash64 is saying.

I know that those two are both things that knock people down and takes the person up front of them but I'm saying this in the case that some people like the chain chomp from Mariokart Double Dash and some people like the bullet on Mariokart DS, Mariokart Wii, Mariokart 7, and Mariokart 8.

In MWii, if the blue shell misses you (fall off the track at the right time while it comes) then the blue shell will turn around, and then hit you.
Edit fact: It can very rarely be used in Battle Mode (mentioned in the video).

yeah blue shells were infuriating to deal with but was nerfing it so hard that the impact is equivalent to that of a green shell or bob-omb really necessary
I like how they reverted it back to its wingless MK64 form in MK7. That way it can actually help players near the back.
It would be cool to have the two versions of the blue shell combined. A blue shell that travels along the ground and can hit other players (not as strong as the explosion). When it finds the player in first, it goes up and crashes into the player, making a explosion, sending the player very high.

@@AndrewGary-jq5oj But the damage dealt by the blue shell to the racers not in first is the same as the damage dealt by the explosion to the racer in first place in the recent version of the item. What I said is that the players not in first should not be as punished as the player in first place. Also I think the explosion damage from the older versions is cooler.

You can also avoid them by letting the second place guy pass you then it hits him/her instead of you. Distance second placer has to be: close

Honestly I like how the blue shell works in 64 and SC since it allows players to try outrun it for the entire race if they are skilled enough while also sending them flying in the air if they mess up or get hit at all while it is dragging behind them. If you want a example of this in a modern kart racer then look at the SPD from Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart or SRB2K
They made it even easier to mushroom dodge this thing in Mario Kart Tour.
note: The Spiny Shell can be dodged by a mushroom in Mario Kart 8. Just hard.

I just played Mario Kart: Double Dash the other day. I got a blue shell in 3rd place (not 4th as it says in the video) from an item box, as rare as that is.
Another interesting fact: in that game, blue shells only appear on 150cc and Mirror Mode difficulties.
Item ballance in Mario Kart Wii was absolute garbage and its all the more better in Mario Kart 8.
I don't like what they did to the blue shell in Mario Kart 8. It was weakened there. :(

Ganondorf I do agree that it is like the red shell, but it isn't. The blue shell messes you up way longer and worse then the red shells (even tho I think the red shells are op) the blue shell isn't really a challenge for me in mario kart 8 cuz it hardly shows up which is good. I am more worried about the red shells, green shells, the bob-omb, and the lightning now.
Wormy The thing is that the blue shell doesn't distinguish from the red shell how it did in the games before MK8. And no, the blue shell doesn't mess you up way longer than the red shell, at least in Mario Kart 8. In fact, I didn't notice *any* difference between their strength.
I would have found it better if the blue shell had been used less frequently, but with more power on the strike. That way it wouldn't be as annoying and unfair as it was in the past Mario Kart games, and it would be a special item, not just a better red shell.

In 7, its VERY hard to drop out so if you see it coming and your in first its likely too late to drop out, that is why you need to check the bottom screen as often as possible.

MK7's blue shell was the worst, it has a long hit stun, and you have the possibility of falling off the track like rainbow road, because you roll sideways.

lol I just LOVE the blue shell in Mario Kart 7, it's even my favorite of all blue shells! I like that it was buffed. Now it can hit every person in its way and launch players sideways, which opens new possibilities for this item. :)
I wish charectars would get worried if a blue shell is on the way at 1st, then charectars freeze in shock as the shell spins around and then panic as the shell stops in place and charges in.
That blue shell definitely had the most fun in the first Mariokart DS clip.
Something to note, in Mario Cart DS, the player who is in first place at the time of launching will be targeted regardless if said player loses the 1st spot but in Mario Cart 8(and maybe in WII, 7 and Double dash but not sure), the player who is in 1st place(regardless of who it is at the time of launch) will be hit.

Nobody did a ranking of the blue shells from least to most powerful, so here I'll do one with every mario kart game I've played (the ranking is based on how much the blue shell is a threat to 1st place in every game) :
4. 8/8dx : The explosion does the least amount of damage out of this ranking, as it makes you tumble like a red shell, and being hit by it while on glider makes you tumble like a banana. It also has the easiest way to be dodged (that doesn't imply an invincibility item) as well, because of the Super Horn being added, and the blue shell in itself being more rare. It DOES however have the hardest mushroom dodge, since it has a 3 frame window on a 60 fps game.
3. Mk7 : This blue shell is much slower, and the mushroom dodge is easier than in 8, plus you can see if someone has a blueshell in hand on the touch screen, making it the second easiest blue shell to avoid. But this game doesn't have the Super Horn, and getting hit in 1st place by it makes you tumble TWICE, in a random direction that isn't forwards, and most likely in the direction of the pit right by you. Yes, this blue shell is like getting Bulleted in Wii. Honestly a more punishing blue shell since it ALWAYS throws you off the edge when it has a chance, and tumbling backwards takes FOREVER because that game is very slow in general. Plus getting hit by it in a glider is a full stop, so you either fall forever before landing and have to fully reaccelerate on the ground below you, or fall off because it completely stops you over a pit. And there are a lot of gliding sections in this game. It's ranked lower than DS because you can pull Shrooms in 1st place in this game. The most punishing Blue Shell in any game, but you really have to be unlucky to get hit by one.
2. DS : This blueshell makes you tumble upwards and has higher probabilities of arriving. But it also is easy to avoid because you see if someone has it on the touch screen, so you can brake and let 2d place take it. It is much faster since it's the winged version, so it is a bit harder to dodge that way than in 7. You can dodge it with a bomb or by drifting, but with all of that said it's still placed higher because, like I said earlier, you can pull Shrooms in 1st place in 7. Maybe if it weren't the case, we would've had a tie.
1. Wii : It's not even remotely close. This game's computer BREED Blue Shells to a point where it's not even funny. The Mushroom Dodge window is very generous so there is at least that, but honestly the sheer quantity makes it terrifying to be in 1st place. You cannot outrun the blue shell like in 8 200cc, you cannot pull a clutch mushroom like in 7, you cannot skillfully dodge it with a drift like in DS, no. Here the Blue Shell comes to you and there is nothing you can do. The only situational ways you can dodge it is with a banana on a very high ramp and on a cannon, where there are very few spots to do so. Maybe a miracle can happen and you get the item box glitch which gives you a Shroom after your 15th box in a race, but it's super situational and doesn't happen many times.

I also found out about the blueshell in mariokart wii is that if you touch the blueshell when it's flying when your doing a stunt trick it hits you even if your not in first place!

The Spiny Shell may be the most hated item in Mario Kart, but to me, Lightning is worse. It is weak-sause in SS and 8, but I love how strong it was in DD. I miss when it acted like a police car when it had the siren. There is a certain item box in two of 64's tracks that give you the Spiny Shell EVERY time.
I actually like the blue shell because when I’m way out in first the game starts to get boring because the only item I get out of the item boxes or boos are coins, which I hate. The blue shell keeps that from happening, by keeping me in the middle of the race and usually gives me an exciting, intense and close race, and if I’m doing really well in 1st and blue shell is coming and I don’t want to get hit...I back up and let the guy behind get hit instead.

My favourite was the double dash blue shell. Cause when you dodge that, you feel like a boss.
From MK:DD to MK7, they used to take items that were sitting in the roulette box; as well as the ones currently in use. (Even possibly scattering them onto the track)
That stopped with MK8.

Ah, yes, the blue shell. One of the most hated, and yet, most important item in the game. Why though? It adds balance. It's not fun to be far behind and it's not fun to be unopposed. The blue shell gives the leading players something to look out for.
Insane Stuff N Co You should see the DS blue shell! That damn thing got me THREE TIMES IN ONE STINKING LAP!! The worst part about it is there are times to were after somebody throws it and the blue shell explodes somebody else can get another one the second the first shell exploded which can cause a chain of explosions one after the other!

alex perales I cant remember what track. All I know is Mario Kart DS has the most bull shit racer AI in the whole series.
Mike Anthony I understand how it can be annoying at times, but that could easily be rectified by inserting some code that prevents a blue shell from being acquired for 15 seconds after one had already exploded. The races are rather short, with the longest one I've been in, not counting Rainbow Road in MK 64, was around 3 minutes. That would mean that at most, 12 blue shells can show up. I would also add another bit of code that would not allow blue shells to appear within the first 15 seconds, knocking that figure down to 11.

Honestly, I don’t hate this Item. In fact, it’s my Number 1 Favorite Mario Kart Item. Why you ask? Well, for one, it doesn’t bother me when I’m hit, I’m always able to recover. Second, it’s really effective in for you if your the one who threw it, especially in the newer games, like MK7 and 8. And third, it just looks cool as fuck. I’ve never hated this item, I love it.

Mario Kart 64 blue shell was the best in my opinion. It was rare enough that it didn't constantly pester the 1st player, and actually helped the user since it could go on the ground, it hit other people than just someone far ahead of them in the race.
I like the design of the blue shell in mk Wii. The wings are cute.

in mk7, if you get a blue shell in battle mode (which I do with item hacks, the only way) it acts like a green shell and it breaks after maybe 100 hits (something like that, it breaks after a while), and it goes through anyone in its path but doesn't break. (lightning is OP but crashes 3ds lots of times)
I tried that too, I remember Huntereb abused online with it, so I had to try offline xD. For some reason, in MKDS, throwing Blue Shell in Battle crashes DS, but doesn't crash on an Emulator...that's just weird.
