  • We've got a couple new tricks in store for underground buried downspouts in 2022.
    We're going to show you how to install a roof runoff system and vent the downspouts at the inline catch basin. The catch basin will catch shingle gravel and run it to a pop-up emitter that's going to be installed in a way to act as a mini dry well.

    You know what would be amazing for the catch basin would be a stainless steel screen basket. Like a hybrid between a reusable coffee filter and a swimming pool skimmer basket. You may even be able to design something that could be retrofitted to your existing system. The staginess steel screen would be able to remove even the shingle gravel.

    Not a new product, but a possible experiment. Was thinking about adding a catch basin in a low spot next to the downspout line. Then wrap the grate with your fabric to keep out the bulk of the debris. I have Bermuda grass, so it should grow over and cover it as well. A quick fix for a bad spot where water pools up.

    It is as if you were watching me these past 2 weeks. We are north enough to freeze and I was replacing some work done last year with 2 runs using gen 1 popups/restrictors. I extended both runs to the curb, I am using the latest popups/ restrictor plate with a 90 degree fitting and holes drilled in it, My soil is clay and agree it can be a sponge. So I did 2 things - I dug out a mini dry well under both popups , and wrapped the hole and stone in your fabric. Unlike your T connector shown in the video here, the popup with 90 degree connector doesn't go as deep into the ground as that fitting. So the drywell is independently wrapped and is closer to the surface than what you'd have using what is in the video. I also used 2 feet of your cut pipe from the popup to the solid. Again, did this because of freeze issues. Come winter, water should have ways to escape, even if teh popup is under snow or ice. I used your fabric to line the trench (above the drywell portion as well) from the popup to 2 feet past the perforated pipe connection wrapped carefully and packed everything down. So I have 2 feet of perforated pipe wrapped to let water remaining in teh pipe an escape route. Now, I've had to repack the soil around the popups a couple of times, as heavy rain showed that while these worked great and water comes out of the popup but eventually it also finds it's way from beneath/around the popup as the drywell fills and the clay soil around the drywell and under the popup supersaturates and the water looks to exit. This water did compact the soil such that I had to add more to deal with soil compaction and fill the voids the water created. Also, in my case, I've no turf or sod just a dirt yard being restarted from scratch and I think the soil with grass goes a long way to making the pipe and popups stable when wet. But at the moment, I can still walk the trenches after a rain and compact it more . But once I have grass I think it'll all stabilize. A local water utility guy who was checking my meter said the popups being right at the curb was perfect for getting the water into the storm drain. .

    I've got a corrugated pipe that just dead ends under the grass. There's a drop off of at least a meter and a half between the start and the end of the pipe. During heavy rain events, there is enough pressure in that pipe that the grass will rip and open up, allowing gravel and other miscellaneous materials to wash out. The grass falls right back into place as soon as the rain is over. I definitely should do something to set it up better, but heck, its been working fine for about 2 decades at this point.

    Great, educational video. We purchased a new home a little over a year ago. New construction. Whoever installed the pop up drain for the downspout in front of our house must not have done it correctly. I'm basing that off the fact that this past winter, our front stoop, right where the drain runs under, has cracked. Including a corner of the driveway. My theory is that the drain pipe thawed and froze during the coldest part of the winter. Now the builder that built our house is out of business. :(

    Hello Robert, I’m out of Columbus, Ohio. It is standard to take our roof water run off systems under the sidewalk and to the curb. The problem is that the pipe has to belly under the sidewalk and then come back up to go out of the curb. Is there a way to develop a fitting that would connect to 3 inch schedule 40 pipe but it would flatten out to reduce the belly effect but still retain the capacity of a 3 inch pipe

    Not sure if i understand the need for the in line basin? your leaking water into the soil at the bottom of it which confuses me if the purpose is to get rid of water as far away from the house as possible. you also mention its purpose is for venting but the connection at the downspout should have a vent on it right? just trying to understand this. i live in chicago and don't have a huge lot so i really only want to put in a vent/cleanout at the downspout connection and then the pop up at the end of the run near the sidewalk.

    These new catch basins and pop up emitters are nice. One thing I don't understand, Where does the shingle gravel go. If the basin has a hole on the bottom and you fill the bottom with pea stone to act as a dry well, is the shingle gravel collecting on top of the pea stone. With a D box it made sense to use a shop vac and clean out the shingle gravel, but with these won't you suck up the pea stone at the same time. Your videos are awesome. Thanks

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  Před 2 lety +1

      The pea stone is on the OUTSIDE of the in line catch basin. So it's empty inside. The basin has many holes drilled in it to allow for the water to leach into the pea stone. Thank you for commenting. I hope this helps.

      @@FRENCHDRAINMAN My apologies, I thought the in line catch basin was open on the bottom like the new pop-up emitter. Can I ask why sometimes you use a D box (or this new in line basin) a few feet away from the downspout and sometimes you just run the pipe straight to the pop-up. If I am nervous about debris and gravel collecting in the pipe, then one of these in line basins is a must, correct. Any fear of the water velocity slowing down when it goes into the basin?

    Question - Are catch basins required? How come the Buried Downspout Kit for 1% Slope Kit on your website doesn't include them? In this video, would it be OK to connect the two downspout pipes with a Wye and not have any catch basins? In other words, would it work if you did everything the same as in the video except not use any catch basins?

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  Před 2 lety +1

      I want the catch basin to collect shingle gravel as well as a vent. In the winter the street is plowed and snow is ice packed on the pop-up emitter near the street, the water can vent out the basin.

  • @enchantedseasonslawncare8559

    In most cities you can't take the water all the way to the street.

      If it only runs during a rain your fine but if it's a sump pump line running all the time they will ask you to remove it. Usually 20ft off the street.
