    Ron was my friend, he use to tease me about having a crush on "Priest" we had long meaningful talks where he dished out valuable advice but the one thing he never told me is that his was ill his death blindsided me Im so sad that I wasn't there & I didn't get to say goodbye my only solace is knowing in my heart that he loved me so much that he didn't want me to see him ill. Still, I miss you my friend not a day goes by that I don't have a memory of us, I know for sure that I never failed to put a smile on ur face & for that Im grateful. May you rest in eternal peace until we meet again.

    Superfly was a heck of a movie - it was one of the best black films ever made, it was HOT when it came out. As Ron O'Neal pointed out that the black news man is the one that started all the negativity for his movie Superfly.....many times it is black people who help keep blacks down. Like it was black man that started the calling of black americans "African americans" …..we called ourselves black americans and that is what I like best - I don't like being called an African American.

    Exactly what Ron O'Neal said Barrel crab mentality. That's nothing new. The new Man is the black barrel crab.
    We do not need the Civil Rights activists because they're not, but are actors to tell us how to act and how to think. Many of them claimed to be Community leaders but do not live in the community, but one to lecture black people in the community how they are supposed to act in spite of their overall conditions. I'm glad these movies came out, they were much better than the stuff that's out now that's modern-day blaxploitation and buffoonery. Turn on ABC, NBC, CBS, most of those programs cannot hold a candle to what came before. The modern-day reboot of Superfly, which I just saw, was just as good if not better than the 1972 original which made the late Ron O'Neal as an actor even though he struggled to get leading roles. I don't need a Jesse Jackson, a Lerone Bennett, a Marc Lamont Hill, or even an Al Sharpton to lecture me, they do not speak for me, they are out for notoriety and self- perpetuation.

    in part 3 of your interview, ron discusses the parallel beginnings of his and al pacino's careers. it is enraging that al pacino, who played a murdering mobster, then went on to play the most vicious, murderous drug lord (with movie kill scenes that can churn some stomachs). however, thanks to many of those who slandered, ripped and hated on superfly then jumped on the 'godfather and scarface bandwagon', pacino has been rewarded with a blistering and lucrative career. meanwhile, superfly ron; a tremendous actor, struggled to his dying day. as ron says "sorry if that sounds bitter,. it's the way i feel."

    Thanks! Never knew the backstory of what happened after the Superfly film. I grew-up during those times, but was unable to go to Rated R films because I was underage unless my brother took me, which was rare. As a result, I didn't officially see Superfly until 1982 when it was shown on cable. During the 1970's there was a large metropolitan street here with one theater at one end that showed exclusively Blaxploitation films, and another theatre at the other end of the block that exclusively featured Kung Fu films. There was a different movie every week at both theatres for a span running 6-7 years. That's a lot of films!

    So Julius Griffin used the moniker "Blaxploitation" initially, as a pejorative. At least he did inform Mr. O'Neal prior to writing the piece about him. But I am a bit shocked about Cicely Tyson's reaction, all before even seeing the movie. His biggest critics turned out to be his own friends and peers.

    does anyone have any more information about ron's life? i read that the problems with his career sent him spiraling into drug use. he stated, career troubles probably helped contribute to the breakup of his first marriage. what happened to the memoirs he mentioned in "an interview with an icon" that he had started with the thoughts of writing a book? there are still many fans starving for more details of his life. ANYONE please us more information about him.

      it doesn't really make sense that he would falsely claim to have written his memoirs. what would be the point?

    • @badazzmofo
      @badazzmofo  Před 9 lety +3

      Dorothy Brewer
      I'm not saying he falsely made the claim. I know for a fact he was working on his memoir. I don't know for sure if he ever finished, and if he did finish, what I don't know what happened to it. I was told by someone else that it was finished. I offered to publish it through my company. But to date, no one has been able to produce the manuscript. I will go on record as saying that I would gladly publish Ron's memoir. The man was a genius and great human being.

      i wonder if ron's ex, carol tillery banks, would be interested in writing a bio of her time with him during the 'superfly' days. she could shine so much light on what happened, to what should have been a brilliant career, after the media misconstrued the message in superfly and turned on him like jackals. i think i've located where she may be living. however, i'm somewhat leery of attempting to connect with her (i may try though). since you're a big fan of ron's (and somewhat of a celeb) maybe you can reach her...lol. badazzmofo
