Actually, if you put in directions from Atlanta to Asheville (and vice versa) into Google Maps or Waze, chances are, this is the way it'll take you. This is, believe it or not, the shortest/most direct route between the two. Taking I-85/I-26 actually takes you out of the way a bit.

There are a few but 74 to 441 is the smoothest route you can take to Cherokee.

They probably only would go that way for an alternative route. Weather conditions and traffic might be the cause
