- Warm greetings TPS family! The big question: where is Dan?
Welcome to VCQ Live. Mick here… I'm flying solo tonight as Dan is indisposed. Let's see how we get on!
We do this most Mondays and we're glad to welcome you to the TPS Family.
We're all here to hang out, ask better questions and be among friends.

54:25 “we’re not very organised and we say what we think” ❤😂🎉 you’re honest and kind and march to the beat of your own drums and that’s why we love you. ❤
👏👏👏👏
He played with McCartney, he played with Mayer. YES! We need Robbie McIntosh on the show! Dang, that would be epic...
Daniel is currently working with Neural DSP on his signature plugin: Archetype Dan.
😂🤣
Gandalf came back to the shire to tell Dan about one tele to rule them all. Dan is now off on an adventure to find said tele. Not to worry, Dan has been in contact and said he will call his new telecaster....my precious.
We often hear about the "transparent" overdrive but we need also to discuss the 'transparent" guitar - or amp.
Dan wasn't on due to his annual Aussie accent and slang check. He has to be able to recite the phrases "no worries" "thanks mate" "you're shitting me" "bugger that" "get that in ya" and a random secret phrase with sufficient believability and correct tone or have his passport marked suspect and be subject to extra costs on visa entry to our fair land. However, if he succeeds on following checks, these restrictions will be lifted. Tough but fair.
🤣😂
In the late 90's I pickup a used 40th anniversary and still have it.
Mick - John Layton was Biggles. Famous for the Joe Meek produced hit 'Johnny Remember Me'
I think Dan was at a production meeting (binge)with Rainger fx, designing a dual fluid pedal, minibar+oil can delay.
I Stopped wearing a watch years ago because they never fit right and discovered I didn't need one. I had somehow developed the ability to know the time of day within a minute or two (confirming it by looking at a room clock). I also woke up just before an alarm clock would confirm the time was right to rise. Now, I can even mentally snooze and know what time it is when I awake the second time. I have several watches tucked away in a box. I had previously been interested in the design aspects of many items, including watches.
But if we don't feed our perfectionist tendencies they may very well fade. The question then, is should we view our attraction to perfectionism as a negative trait? I pose this as I incessantly reposition a (rarely used) remote control lying next to my keyboard.
"True Dat" - as our neighbors to the east say. It may take me somewhat more than 5 minutes to, once again, realize I really don't "need" much of anything.
Its interesting to me that your solution to the neck dive of the SG is the same as I have applied to my Strat. A slippery strap distracted my playing as I was having to wrangle the instrument back into position repeatedly.
An open back cab is noticeably affected by the proximity, angle and quality of a rear sound reflective surface. This is almost always an advantage due to adding character over the less adaptable closed back cab.
Beautiful show Mick. I enjoy the solo gigs.
I agree that the Blue Vlogs are great videos and I often rewatch them just for the talks around, thought processes and all of that.
I did miss Dan, but Mick, you really did a great job tonight 🙏.
Cheers!
(I’ll be reading the papers tomorrow and be listening to the radio: a voice in my head tells me Dan might be off to be crowned the first real King of the Aussies in the morning... 😉)
Thanks Mick for taking time out of your day, great show and I hope someday that Thorpy makes a pedal called "The Mick" as a tribute to the Dane...different colours though for the knobs. If you guys ever are in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ever...I'd definitely buy you guys a round!
I’ve never not had a great time in Pittsburgh, beautiful city!
@@Cesiumswimsuit A lot of micro breweries are here now, especially if you come back check out one called Fermata.
That "system" includes activation, EQ, and distribution.
Someone knew in the 90's said he got a silver 25th anniversary Fender Strat, essentially un-played. it was in a case under the bed of someone who had died. I offered to buy it from him and never even got a price.
Those three categories remain true with or without electricity.
To answer your question Mick as to where Dan is I think Dan is making a Video for TPS possibly overseas.
Hey mick I love the show. Fred from Brooklyn NY
Loved the last episode with Davids "weird" pedals... I was so inspired that I dragged out my ridiculously amazingly cheap Shimmer pedal, threw in a ton of delay, along with some extreme OD, plugged in the looper and went on an amazing trip for hours! I would use every one of Davids pedals, particularly the scratch one, and be happy for years! Sadly, they are a bit expensive for an old bloke like me but loved them all enough to be keeping an eye on the 2nd hand market! 🙂
Definitely need Lee and Pete to play both your rigs as the way you would have them set up for a live gig! Cheers loved this one. Your one of my favs Mick tell Dan to wear whatever hat he wants when he wants. My Philosophy is don’t care. 🤟🎸
One of the things I enjoy about having a variety of guitar styles is that each seems to require a slightly different touch to bring out its best and that is what leads to a change of feel in playing style. So, While a listener may not detect a difference, my sense of satisfaction may increase at the end of a familiar piece.
Awesome upload Mick. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you!
Source Audio were the first whose layout, features and controllability were sufficient to attract me to the price range. I have a Sondblox2 Orbital modulator permanently on my pedal board, along with, a three position overdrive and four preset EQ.
If the universe could speak it would have to refer you to its creator for any reliable response.
Mick, I would be happy to loan you my Moogerfooger. I have no idea if that’s what Guthrie used but it’ll be good to have on a ring mod show!
Dan is working on his entry to British Rally Championship circuit and making sure his car is entered in all events on the 2023 calendar.
Dan is also procuring a set of maps for Mick who will be riding shotgun.
The TPS team theme song for this season - which will be played loudly on several occasions - is Jeff Beck’s Starcycle.
I reckon that Peter Frampton phoned and said, "I need my pedalboard sorted out, and while you're here, want to play the Royal Albert Hall with me?"
That SG looks super cool on you Mick.
I missed most of this live due to dog walking in a gale. IQ test? Did catch the last bit, including you regarding your "herd", Mick. Immediately reminded me of Tom Bukovac's episode at Vince Gill's house/studio, where he asked Vince to rank his guitars and also choose which he'd save from a fire. Vince's choices were all sentimental. His first guitars or precious gifts. After hearing so often that guitars are "just tools", Vince's words made me feel much better about my own deep sentimentality. It's almost as though my guitars are like records themselves, which never fail to conjure memories and mark life events. Very few would argue a song is just a fungible thing, as is frequently said about some (not all, of course) instruments. No less than the utterly unique and soulful Uncle Larry has bought and sold many guitars but I'm grateful to Vince for making me feel better about holding on to mine. Everyone's motivation/decision making is their own; one no "better" than another.
Dan was not on because he was busy filming that VERY concise video about the external G3 unit where he only had to take out a handful of screws :) :) Only a few less than the 66 in a 201x series MacBook Pro keyboard swap....terrible engineering, ask me how i know
Mick , (Glasses ) right there with ya . I have a few pairs of " Readers" . Distance is perfect without them , On and off all day . Love the 70' strat ,and the new SG . I too am looking for a used 64 era SG . The 61's are everywhere but not the 64.
Tthe cherry red ages toward a more rich look with less detectable color shift because of the addition yellowing on the basic color range.
Good to hear the correct use of ‘ properly’
Recommending the Vibro Champ Reverb for a bedroom tube amp. 5 watts, reasonable volume, verb/trem, takes pedals well. It will still get loud if you crank it but you can attenuate if needed.
46:11 I went to Musicians Institute in Los Angeles when Allen Hinds was teaching there. Fun fact, all of his picking was upstrokes (at least at the time ~2007, 2008)
The challenge for an all tube pedalboard could easily be met by 10 pedals from Effectrode alone. But then there is the additional board of preamp and overdrives from Kingsley, Vox, AMT, Two Note, deLisle (EF86), BK Butler…
Dan, is down under, sydny opera house, rocking it up!! live aid style 🤙because he's a very generous musician
Is he stuck at home self oscillating?
Dan lost track of time while browsing through photos of his 1961 Vox AC30.
Bi-focal contacts are available and work better than framed spectacles.
He's purchased another pre CBS telecaster and had to travel immediately as it was a deal that expired in 24 hours. Or he's in Thailand
For anyone interested in more information about Jack White's SNL tone... Jack's signature sound is a 1960's Silvertone Twin Twelve 1484 paired with a Fender Twin Reverb. Jack once mentioned in an interview that he uses the Silvertone because it has great overdrive and the Fender for the reverb. Both cranked. I've seen different amps here and there over the years, but that's been his go-to rig since the White Stripes debut album in 1999. One of my favorite albums of all time. Looks like he paired the Silvertone with a smaller Fender amp at SNL this time. Probably a Deluxe Reverb. Same concept. One gritty, low-headroom amp and one Fender blackpanel style amp with a ton of fuzz and pitch effects. A simpler option could be a Jackson Audio Twin Twelve overdrive pedal or a JHS Twin Twelve overdrive pedal (discontinued) with a POG pedal and a Big Muff into a Fender amp. Or just grab Jack's Third Man fuzz pedals. That's what he uses live.
Did you notice the drummer had what looked like to me was a tom with the batter head facing away from him and the rest of the kit. He had to reach over it to play it. It was weird.
@@TheRealcdawg22 I didn't catch that; I'll have to go back and check that out!
@@Heath_Herring Yeah, it was the tom furthest to the right, like above where the snare should be, but for some odd reason facing outward?
@@Heath_Herring He can clearly be seen playing it in the first song at 1:35 and 2:27, approximately.
Dan is on a secret mission for MI6 to find the best tone a guitar and amp can produce :)
Dan buying a new Hat ! 🤠...
Hanging out with Zach?! Is Mick FINALLY gonna get a novo?!
Dan has been recalled to the Mother Ship for a brief reorientation.
The Waine Krantz ringmodulator is a EHX Frequency Analyser.
I know this because he turned his than bassist Tim Lefebvre on to them, and he used one for many years.
😉
Line 6 Catalyst is interesting because it does not have any models of other brand amplifiers. It contains a range of 6 amplifier choices all fully designed by the Line 6 folks after studying the hundreds of amplifiers that have measured.
I prefer to think what I say before saying what I think and never preface the comments.. It'll either stick or smear, but I'll being informed in the process.
Too late but Dan is having his beard trimmed and inspected.
Noo Joisee is having it's best winter since I moved hers.... No Snow at all, 50 degree s outside.
Best, Mick, Pete.
The two rock knobs need less shine and more contrast to read easily.
Challenge for the Andertones:- Do the whole show without Pete doing a double entendre 😁
Hahhahaha!
@@ThatPedalShow I'd love to see Pete trying to use either of their pedal boards...he'd be so confused about the order. It'd be hilarious.
You dealing with your glasses isn't a bother at all Mick. People shouldn't be annoyed by this. I find your developed technique with them actually pretty impressive ;-)
I guess Dan is off to Australia visiting family and friends.
Lee & Pete should choose 3 items each from TPS collection that if they could keep they would
If I were hit with a pedal I'd be tempted to get loud, as well.
Dan is subbing for Pete Thorn in the Classic Rock show, because Pete's superglued finger has fallen apart again.
Either that, or he went out to get some more Internet, because the old lot ran out.
Am I close?
Hahaha! Close enough Doug!
Dan was unable to attend because he is on an intense week long training session for his new moonlighting gig, as an haberdashery salesman
Dan's at the Palace to be knighted during the day. 🏴👍👍👍🥃Respect to you mate
You almost convinced me that an SG was viable, with the suede strap, but I'm a shortarse as well...
Dan couldn't pass up the chance to play trumpet in a BTO/ Metallica tribute band in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I was there. I bought him a Blue.
Mike Dawes, hell yes
2 hrs of lone mick 😳 this is loads better than any new marvel movie or what have you.
Ha! Bless you!
@@ThatPedalShow Mick is cool
Well, I would say that’s not that hard to beat any new Marvel movie, it’s been a low bar lately…
a 2h Q&A with Mick is WAY better than Marvel or anything recently produced by Hollywood! One of the reason I watch more YT than TV Shows or Movies :)
Key player in the Guitar YT cinematic universe
Hey Mick, Wayne Krantz uses EHX Frequency Analyzer. He shows it in a recent Rig Rundown.
Thanks Brian!
Ideas for the TPS takes over Anderton's: either a show on amps you guys don't have (Magnatone / Maggie's vs Maggie based pedals) or a show on guitars you don't have easy access to
Nice! Liking this, esp the Magnatone part….
Hi TPS. I was wondering if the hudson broadcast could do the job of a klon? Or is the klon more specific?
Dear Mick, please go play in a few bands! You need it, quality time 😉. And, you work too much. Go and have some fun, live the good old times: play.
We’ll be here... 😄
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Dan is learning how to play a strat
a) Not the baseball cap b) Lee and Pete decide which of your guitars they like the most - which one would they takeaway if they could have one for free
My guess is Dan ran into Jimmy page and is currently at the Crowley house having a seance communing with Jimi Hendrix. Haha
Great job flying solo on this episode, Mick... no slight to Dan of course.
Nice to hear the shoutout for the Multidrive, a versatile sleeper pedal for sure. Fuzz section is well tweaked to cover a broad range of voices. OD section does great germanium boost and drive. And the switchable ranges on the distortion side do a great job of covering the various eras of Marshall, plus contemporary high gain amps. The mid switch in the eq section is very helpful and critical to getting things nailed down. The other huge feature is the parallel stacking. Apologies if this is too much rambling on my part, lol. Sleeper pedals might be an idea for a good recurring show theme as well.
If you do happen to read this, curious if you have ever ran a Super Tube to compare to your various TS style pedals? Thanks.
Hello Todd, thanks for that. Haven’t tried the Super Tube… yet!
@@ThatPedalShow - I'll look forward to yourself and Dan blowing one up at some point then, lol
He's field testing a G4.
Have you tried a Fender Player Lead III?
Gone to Australia
I know it’s a bit late, but did Dan go on a tour of a hat factory to power the coming weeks and months of VCQ?
Dan, which hat sounds best?
A nice break haha
You guys should trade off solo QNA’s
For Pete and the Captain take over, they could have a take with “Multiple Amps vs On Clean Amp + Pedals”
(to stay in the “pedal” theme, even if it has already been mentioned many times before, it would be great to know their take)
Wet Dry Rigs is a plethora of Innuendos waiting to happen but be good to see the guys have a go
TPS Takeover Andertons and I think you need to build rigs for Lee and Pete and see how choices vary from their new rigs!
Regarding Lee & Pete visiting. Please get them on my ‘53 Pro Amp. I’d love to see and hear their reaction to playing something so old and different. Cheers 👍
Great shout Dan!
OK one more,
Dan is... temporarily working for D.A.R.P.A. consequently after an experiment on dual delays and stereo amping also frfr and 3000watt active monitors, a parallel dimension opened up, accidentally, creating a wormhole portal via a double dotted eight/triplet/quarter note demo on a well known U2 song, later reports say he shook hands with God through the portal and was given the "Golden pick of destiny!"
However it may have be Jean luc picard or janeway, it's a guessing game with baldness,
Reports by a private investigator said... "After an anonymous phone call from what I believe to be the dolstrum device thingy, (£29.99 off reverb) I was given GPS coordinates to Dan's location, when I got there I heard a loud twangy telecaster lush type noise that was for lack if words!... infinite!! As it had no beat as eternity has no time so it was more like swells and the whole city blocks power supply was cut out total blackout, apart from the pedal shed, which was later determined but not confirmed entirely to be an effect of the boss dd3t pedal drawing vacuum energy directly from the other dimension space portal at zero point decay rate due to an anomaly in the pedals buffer, as I approached, rather reluctantly, yet overcome by curiosity, drawn to this angelic tone from the heavens! I shuffled along to the shed but as i got closer time changed from 4/4 to 3/4 then before i could get a peep in side i was met with men in orange hazmat suits and then only to be drugged and a black bag put over my head hands zip tied and woke up naked in andertons music store curled up on the floor straddling a harley benton strat, and the receipt, funnily enough in Dan's name??!? to be greeted by the captain, who could neither confirm nor deny these events" but was still kind enough to do a speedy cash refund.
Neighbours of the pedal show shed, location classified, later gave testimonies saying they also heard a noise and witnessed Dan being taken away by "officail looking types"
Also a huge 500 foot tall sea monster was reported to be seen off the coast of Japan and came out of nowhere at the exact same time of said incident, and mass ufo sightings accross the west coast of Ireland have been increasingly reported specifically from residents of a town called cloverfied. Later covered up and everybody in connection to this event witnesses and colleagues were all given extra covid boosters for unkown reasons. The official story was huge methane gas leak in small horse town- residents relocated to unknown locations! The Sun newspaper.
It was said that no one knows how this was done but speculation from pro musicians and quantum mechanic physicists all align, they all say " it is entirely possible that Dan also used an additional delay pedal that no one was aware of at the time but Dan and that the feedback at full may have caused spacial anomalies or it might just be that someone dmt laced the water supply.
Joe Rogan.
Hi Mick - full marks for holding the fort without Dan.
I'd be grateful if you could you ask Lee & Pete what their favourite amps are to pair individually with a Tele, Strat and LP e.g. does Pete think a Les Paul through a JCM800 is unbeatable but a Strat is only at its best into a Fender Twin etc.
inevitably one member of the band wants a solo career. Sad Day. Dan will be missed.
Dan bought a farm and he's off filming his farming reality show???
Well he's already got the mennonite beard look to go full barn raising farmer....
While I have tried a fair number...I definitely haven't gone out on a "search"....but with all of the Fender Strats that I have tried, I never found one that felt right in my hands. Then I tried G&L.....
I got one of their S-500 guitars (Rosewood board) because it felt so right in my hands. A year later.... I happened across a used Legacy (Maple board, guitar dated1995) that sounded so good! I even overlooked the Maple board, added it to my tool box and sold that loved S-500. Very different sounds, but the Legacy was by far my FAVORITE! My other S-Style guitar is a Hamer Mirage! Killer (but not quite as nice a tone as the Legacy!) !
Great shout! I soooo should have mentioned G&L!
Mick, do you still have the Collings on order, or did you cancel that when the vintage strats came into the picture?
Yah, the latter. A focusing of priorities, you might call it. :0)
Dan isn’t there because his rig got gigged!
In Americaneese that means his car got skewered!
Mick, since you have 2 Two-Rock (CRS & TS1), are you doing a Clean/Dirty rig or are you doing Dry/Wet rig? Did you consider a Wet/Clean/Dirty/Wet with the CRS, the TS1 and the Mesa stereo amps for Wet… Going for “imposing setup that is unrealistic and unpractical to ever use on stage” rig :)
PS: The reason I’m asking is because I have a Two-Rock Studio Signature and I would love to add a TS1.
I wish Two-Rock would make a “Studio TS”, like a smaller, lighter, less wattage, with maybe just the lead channel, no fet, less options in a head priced similar to the Studio Signature.
A “Studio TS” would be a perfect companion for someone that already has a SS for the cleans, and therefore mainly use the “Studio TS” for raw dirty lead tones. I know Two-Rock makes the TS1 40/20 with 6v6s, but I don’t know how great it is in comparison to the 100/50w 6L6 version, and also the price is pretty high… so at this price, I would just go for the 100/50, even if I would always use it on 50w (so I could use it on my Marshall 2061cx 60w Cab… I love this cab).
Has Dan been “Delayed”
I think Dan might be busy with his GigRig business maybe something big coming our way
Dan is off with Paul Reed Smith, collaborating on a new telecaster shaped guitar.
Nothing like abit of Luther
um
can we talk about that brace of goats behind u mick?
I think Dan is negotiating a deal with PRS to sell gig rig...
