I noticed in the video when you were putting the bowl on that the plastic baffle wasn't on the jet. Does the baffle make a difference in performance or not?
You said the 85 has a smooth choke plunger but mine doesn’t, it has the o ring and I’m 100% positive mine is an original 250es big red 1985 carb. However, it was rebuilt poorly once which I’ve corrected and it runs good other than the choke sticks a little. Wondering if I have the wrong plunger or if you misspoke when you made the comparison.
The only difference at all between the 85 plunger and the 86/87 is the groove in the center to add an O-ring. aside from that they are exact. You can use an 85 plunger in the 86/87 carb or an 86/87 plunger in the 85. What really matters on the plunger is the bottom where it seals and the needle.
great videos. i have rebuilt 3 250 carbs with your kits and 2 are great. one starts idles but when I hit the throttle, it bogs and will die. If i feather it, I can get it to rev but something isnt right. any suggestions? It is an 86 or better carb with the little jet to the side and little black plug. thanks in advance.
awesome tutorial! have read several over the years, none of which have been REMOTELY close to as clear as this video presentation...learned SO MUCH. I do have a question, at approx 25:32 mark in the video you are talking about adjusting a fuel screw while the engine is warmed and idling....but I couldn't see exactly which screw was being adjusted. Also wondering how you do this since that screw appears to be covered by the fuel bowl cover when carb is assembled? I'm probably missing the obvious, but don't have my carb or manual in front of me at the moment. Also I subscribed and "liked", and made purchases online, I'll be rebuilding my carb for 87 250es after the parts arrive. Kudos to you for offering this information online, AND supplying what is obviously the best rebuild kit available. Wishing I had known about 223cycle many years ago when I had the carb apart the first time....most of my carb screws have seen better days, lol.
Thank you for the wonderful comment sir an your support. As far as the Mixture/Fuel screw, It sits in front of the bowl and is not the easiest to get to. But it is not covered up by the bowl. What link can use or direct link to find a schematic diagram for '85 350X Keihin QA carb. Have had no luck for exploded view of carb. Thank you in advance.
Mostly Distilled Water with Extreme Simple Green Aircraft. It's safe for aluminum and will not turn the carburetor bodies black like with most normal degreasers.
I rebuilt my sons carb on his 85 big red. Now, after it warms up it just idles itself up several hundred rpm. I don’t think we put a new o ring on the choke plunger. Could that be the problem?
Doubt it’s that. Sounds like it may be running lean. Check to make sure your fuel flow is good. Weak fuel flow will cause the fuel level in the bowl to drop and cause it to run lean. Also make sure your boots (from engine to carb, from carb to air box, from airbox to frame) are tight and fully seated. It could also be a faulty oring on the intake boot against the engine. Also make sure you have the fuel screw adjusted correctly
I'm putting a 86 350x carb together. There is a black plug that goes in the float bowl forward of the primary. Two places it could go, not sure exactly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
This means you will have a QA10A carb (or should for 350X) that is an 86 350X. That plug is for the updated starter jet design. So it will go in the hole above where the small starter jet is on the side next to where the primary jet/circuit should be. Now unlike the BigRed/SX, on that carb it should not have a primary jet. You can use the steel and brass Drimel cups or 000 fine steel wool

Original Name brand Pine Sol works wonders as a Carb Dip. Better than any carb dip you will buy! Soak it for a day, rinse and blow it out really well.
