  • This video showcases the process of replacement of the 6 glow plugs on the Mercedes 3.0 Liter Diesel in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The process is the same for other vehicles that use this popular engine such as ML Series Mercedes and Sprinter Vans, among others.
    The diagnostics performed, prior to replacement, could be shown if requested but it was simply an active code for a #6 glow plug open. I tested the module and harnesses for continuity , opens and shorts - all was OK. It was decided by the owner after a discussion to replace all 6 glow plugs due to mileage and desire to upkeep the maintenance of the vehicle.

    Excellent how to. Thank you. I had one glow plug refuse to release and had to have the head replaced (under warrant.) Now cylinder 5 glow plug is faulting.

    I just changed my No 2, 5 & 6. No 6 is a swine, but I used a GP socket with an integral UJ, a short extension, and my 3/8" ratchet drive went underneath the crossbar (top of picture @11:20). I seemed to have less trouble with No 6 than you did, perhaps because you are wearing gloves! (Don't know how anyone can work with gloves.) I removed the engine cover clip that I think your finger is on @12:05, and I removed bolt securing that plastic cable duct on the side of the engine so I could pull the duct forward a bit. There are horror stories of GPs snapping off, but like yours, mine came out easy - soaked 3 days with penetrating but didn't warm the engine.

    First of all thanks for making this video. The world needs quality content creators; such as yourself.. Just a heads up for anybody that does have this particular diesel as I do in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. I recently took it in for an oil change and again another service light this time for number 6 plug.. now here's the bit of information that I didn't see covered in your video.. my mechanic says that the wiring harness also needs to be replaced in addition to the good maintenance measure of replacing all of the plugs.. he says that there is 10 hours worth of Labor because the wiring harness hooks into the main harness of the vehicle and requires a lot of pulling things apart and then putting them back.. the wiring harness alone is $1,300 and each plug 400 not including the 10 hours labor at $145 /hr. Please share your thoughts on this wiring harness nonsense.. why would it be necessary to have to replace all that when it's just the number 6 plug.. I understand the necessity to do all the plugs at the same time.. that's just cost-effective from a labor standpoint.. thanks again..

      I disagree with this dealership nonsense. You can measure resistances and do several other checks including visual assessments before changing the whole harness. That’s just a way for flat rate shops to have a ‘billable event’ instead of actually troubleshooting a failure. It’s a constant irritation to me and other techs that actually care about our customers vs greedy shops and greedy techs who can change that harness in 4 hours and get paid 10. It’s trash. And it’s hurting our industry’s brand.

    I wish every mechanic had the same work ethic as you do. Nice vid & good job. Do the factory glow plugs get anti seize as you're doing??? It seems to me that braking glow plugs off in the head is a common thing.
    Your thoughts???

    • @normando1974
      @normando1974  Před 3 lety +1

      I don’t think they normally apply any anti seize, from my experience.
      The plugs are stainless steel so there’s hope but my motto with stuff like this is always “better to be looking AT it, rather than FOR it” !!

    @luigia.8740 Před 3 lety

    hello from Italy and congratulations for the video, really very clear. The only thing that worries me is that there is a real legend of how easy it is to break these glow plugs and do very expensive damage. I have heard from several people but no one agrees on this: is it better to proceed with the engine slightly warm or cold? How many NM of torque need to be retightened?

    • @normando1974
      @normando1974  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Luigi, I like to try and change them when everything is a little warm. If you find one that seems seized, you can soak it overnight in penetrating fluid. Make sure the socket is fully engaged to the bottom of the hex. This will help ensure that if you have a tight one, it won't break off. I have had some that were tight but be patient, and work the threads in and out and continue to soak in penetrating oil. It will eventually work its way out.
      Install to 8 Nm (71 inch/lbs)

  • @berettaboi
    @berettaboi Před 3 lety

    It seems the plugs get seized in at the bottom (basically at the combustion chamber /end of the shaft), a bit of anti seize down that far may be the ticket to prevent seized plug in there

    I'm getting the "Diesel preheat in process" warning on the dash intermittently. When I get it, the CEL comes on and will stay on for a few days. During those days, my remote start will start, but kill the motor in about 5 seconds. I think I need to replace the gloplugs. I plan to use a high temp antiseize on them. Any reason not to do that?

      @@normando1974 I dont think that is right, @ 10:24 you can see the Mercedes logo on the fuel rail part sticker, which would means the vehicle you were working on was probably 2007 or 2008 (in North America). Daimler Benz merged with Chrysler / Jeep for a short while and put their OM642 3.0L diesel in some WK models. The view of the headlights at 23:04 confirms WK model.
      The Ram and Grand Cherokee 3.0L Ecodiesel (2014) was a FCA Italian VM Motori diesel motor. The only thing common was 3.0L size.
      The Mercedes OM642 was put in many vehicles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM642_engine I have it in my WK and another car.
      Thanks to you and your camera person for posting your helpful video. Nice job. For DIYers that is a tough job. I need to do it currently on mine. I'll probably wait to do it when I replace the oil cooler seals. Hope you post more videos.
