Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

This guy seems like that cool uncle you have who would secretly give you a sword for christmas even though your parents don't want you having one

Fair point.

Darley Havidson
Well that went off a completely different tangent...
Yeah, you need to crystallize the outer edges, else it'll just start to deform.
We actually work hardened the edge with a ball peen hammer-not sure why that was edited out.
This guy really knows how to explain the history of bronze weapons. Great video as always.
I know it seems counter intuitive, but please don't wear gloves around a drill. It will be a FAR worse injury as it will grab the glove and twist and pull your fingers off... vs just a minor to moderate cut. (At 13:54)
Ay man live life on the edge ya know what Im saying
Wearing gloves around any tool with rotating cutting blades should be avoided, really. Table saws, especially.
@@gian3458 Yeah, it's funny how people think safety is always wearing equipment and don't do the proper research while they are trying to do this kind of stuff. should know better by now and now they are an example to the world...a bad example.
It's mandatory to wear gloves in while using these tools Western Australian workplaces, because Occupational Health experts make the rules & most of them have never been out of their office.

I'm surprised there wasn't a mention of work hardening the bronze. it won't keep an edge without work hardening it.

Nope. Me too (no hashtag, though.)
Bookmarked him for my sons’ next birthday parties. They are turning 6 and 4. 🤔 ...May have to wait a few years, or find a different excuse to throw a sword party.
What I enjoy the most about this channel is that the videos are like old school Discovery Channel, where we start with a goal and the video content is all about educating you on the process and the history that led to the modern process
I thoroughly enjoyed Sword Casting Guy in this video. He was informative and extremely personable.
I challenge you to use your glass and copper to make a lightbulb but you might need tungsten
Don't u need tungsten too for it?
Amith W.A tungsten is just better, not needed.
I think the best option for him would be carbon (like the first electric lamps that were really useful)
You'd probably need mercury though, unless you can think of another way to draw a vacuum?
Considering he uses his modern bandsaw and drills all the time, he'd probably just buy a vacuum pump too.
Lol, I think it takes more than that, but I might be wrong. But definitely the wire would have to be very thin
I think it's a marvelous idea to have an expert show you how to do the item before you attempt it! I'm sure it cuts down on the time it takes to get it right immensely. Apart from making glass you hadn't so I'm super excited for you!
Should have casted a bronze pommel so you can end them rightly

@@animeandstuff5377 because if it gets caught on that bit, it will suck your hand in.
You're also not supposed to use gloves with a saw for the same reason. The glove could get stuck in the rotating blade so it's a lot safer just to use your hands.
if im right (which never happende) it aplies to all rotary tools

You have a talent for showing how interesting everything around us can be. Looking forward to the next one!
Damn, that man absolutely ran the class that every kid looked forward to
Great, enthusiastic science teachers are rare and important
I have an idea for a future video. You'll eventually need to do iron smithing and will probably have to employ blacksmithing techniques. You could do another collaboration with another youtuber, Alec Steele, who just recently moved to Montana.
No no no he definitely needs to meet up with Torbjörn Åhman.
My man predicted the future
One can imagine how damn difficult making a sword was before power tools but they made gorgeous swords, the labor makes it seem equal to building a car from scratch.
I really like this format in the video, where you have a historian help you create something from your own raw materials!
Loved this guest! explained it in a fun and interesting way! Awesome results Andy!
I love the finishing gag , very this old tony
Figuring in losses in casting from the sprue and shaping and all of that, and depending on the type of pennies used (presumably pre-82 minting) and the alloy composition (let's say 88% copper), I figure you'll need roughly about 300-350 pennies to make a sword (0.8kg), give or take, I'm guessing. You'll likely want to make a bigger batch of bronze for the pour though, so let's say 350-400 pennies to play it safe, but you'll almost certainly end up with excess metal remaining.
Props to Andy for making videos even on his birthday! Also watch that subscriber count, it's getting dangerously close to one million!

Andy.... please do bismuth bronze at some point please, if I'm. It mistaken it was the primary metal to come out after tin and copper bronze.
Actually arsenic bronze was a common intermediate bronze that was used
bismuth bronze is more of a modern alloy. Most bismuth bronzes contain around 1% bismuth and were used because of their resistance to corrosion in sea water. Bismuth wasn't discovered until a long time after the bronze age. Hope this helps.
Did you hear about bismuth bronze from dwarf fortress or terrafirmacraft?
Dunkleosteus terrafirmacraft, I still want him to do it though, that color though is beautiful.
@@TheTamaranch ah nice. We only had bismuth bronze in TFC because it was in dwarf fortress and we needed more variety in the early game. The recipe we used was off and it's not ACTUALLY green in real life... Glad you enjoyed playing the mod though.

I’m actually curious how many pennies it takes to make a sword 😂😂😂
Death by a thousand cents...
I'm not sure melting pennies is a great idea. I'm not talking about the legality (since the Treasury doesn't seem to really care what people do with pennies, so long as you don't melt them down and _sell_ the metal), but since 1982 they've been copper-clad zinc. Before then, they were brass, so you could have still made bronze by adding tin, but now they're only about 2.5% copper.
Nice to see some progress here
Best episode so far
Lmao *uses giant bronze sword to cut butter and sandwich*
Pennies are mostly zinc
Not if they're before a certain year. If you have older pennies they actually have a very high copper content.
Its illegal to melt them also

I have an almost identical sword, which I made on a course run by a friend of a friend. Mine does not have the full pommel, but it has a much finer finish, and I used no power tools. Just a selection of files and different grades of abrasive cloth/paper. Something of a jewel in my collection, because it was made by my own hands.

Isn’t it illegal to melt pennies?
it is yes. not sure if there is lee way on using the materials for non profit, but as far as im aware its illegal for any given reason. but that doesn't always mean its effectively a law that is upheld and demanded.
It’s legal if you don’t get caught
Its only illegal if you are trying to change the value (i.e. changing a 1 dollar bill to a 10 dollar bill) or if uou are melting for scrap, melting for the materials or deforming it isnt illegal or else every pressed penny machine will be illegal to use
PremiaCamaro that’s what they always say.. before getting caught
Aaron Ives that’s interesting but if you were to sell the remelted penny ingots that would be illegal right?
I would be very excited if bit by bit you made a full Bronze Age Greek suite of bronze
Great vid keep up the hard work
BUT CAN WE CAST *OBSIDIAN*
Just a heads up, it’s illegal to melt US currency for their metal content.
No one seems to care about pennies, though. I saw someone make a fancy kitchen floor out of pennies and epoxy resin, which I'm pretty sure is also illegal, but they didn't get any nasty letters from the Treasury Department even though it went viral.
It also isn’t illegal. If you aren’t going to try and use those as legal tender then there is no issue
@@ElijahCem I did not state anything on the matter of him using them as a legal tender, I had stated you may not melt US currency for their metal content specifically. To "alter" a coin and use them as a legal tender is a different matter and is still illegal.
No its not. You just cant sell or profit by the destruction. You can specifically destroy coins for novelty use, the law for which you can read at any museum gift shop where you crush a quarter or penny in a machine.
