Consistency has been a strong suit but ya boy davobands is back with ANOTHER first time elden ring playthough episode! Today we dip our toes into the mountain tops of the giants and take on the deeproot depths (rip my babygirl fia) trying to get to a point when I can reliably post 2 episodes a week. Hopefully we get there soon and i hope yall enjoy this episode!

15:54 LORE EXPLANATION:
Fia is a "deathbed companion." Which means her role was to lie in bed next to people who were dying. (It is left open to interpretation of this was sexual or magical in nature. Could be neither, could be both.)
But basically what this ritual would do, is allow Fia to steal a tiny bit of life from the dying, and once she had enough life force within her, she could "give birth" to new life. Basically she is siphoning a small amount of life from a lot of people, and using it to resurrect one person.
She was originally supposed to resurrect an unnamed nobleman, but she left to the lands between and decided to use her life force to bring back Godwyn instead. Godwyn being a super powerful demigod who only died a partial death, stuck in limbo. (It was Rannis fault. She used the rune of death to basically split death in half. Godwyns soul died, but not his body. Rannis body died, but not her soul. That's why Godwyn is that giant rotting fish carcass next to Fia, and Ranni is a ghost haunting a doll.)
Since Godwyn didn't die a proper death, his half-alive corpse is infecting the roots of the Erdtree, and spreading death-root everywhere (hence all the skeletons.) Since he can't die, no one can.
Fia plans to use her magic and reverse Godwyns death as best she can, hopefully freeing the undead or at the very least letting them grow powerful enough to defend themselves against the Golden Orders crusade.
In practice, Fia steals a little of your total HP and gives you a poise/defense boosting item.
Plus whenever you hug her, she "saves" you characters stats/armor/weapons and those players appear in other people's worlds as "Dias Champions"
Since some players hug her really early in the game, the champions can be weaker, hence the easy boss fight.
TL;DR Fia hugs people to steal some life force from them, and she's uses that life force to resurrect the dead.
Fia killed D because he was a weird racist religious fanatic. D serves the golden Order and his crusade forces him to kill anyone the Golden Order deems "unfit." He and his twin brother are two bodies that share one mind.

@@davobandsthis lore dump is in a way altered due to their personal feelings on the matter but if you watched Vaati’s explanation you’ll get the whole story, in my opinion those who live in death should all be brought to rites and be given a proper death so they can be revived by the erdtree, it is why in my play throughs I collect all deathroot in the lands between and give them to the beast clergyman and help d and his brother kill Fia, plus he gives you his armor when you rest at the grace. You’ll understand in time why Fia must be killed, like you I completed Fia and D’s quest and killed him after he killed Fia but after I understood the lore I regretted my Decision not to mention it’s more likely she slept with those who live in death, is it any wonder D calls her a whore
@@imeanslaverywasveryprofita4626 you bring up a good point. Those who live in death deserve peace, but we do see that the Golden Order created TWLID and then torture and imprison them. While D himself might believe himself to be righteous, he does serve an objectively evil organization. The omen, the misbegotten, the merchant clan, the albunuarics, the fire giants, the demi-humans, the Nox, the Numen, the tarnished, they all face discrimination and violence from the golden Order, and usually disproportionate to their crimes. All of those groups I just listed have their fair share of evil within, but the Golden Order fundamentally does not care, and prosecutes them purely on how well they serve their interests. (As seen with the dragon cult. The Golden Order declared dragons to be heretics and added them to their crusade. But when the dragons proves too strong to subjugate, the Golden Order immediately reversed it's stance and welcomed dragon worship into their beliefs. Almost like their beliefs are not set in stone, and change to suit their own selfish interests.) I guarantee you, that if TWLID suddenly became more powerful, the Golden Order would suddenly find some brand new "undiscovered" text written by the two fingers, declaring that TWLID are technically holy due to their connection to Godwyn.
The Golden Order is shown many times in the narrative to be a bunch of bigoted hypocrites who kill and subjugate whatever gets in their way.
Fia is not totally good, but D seems to revel in killing her, and he even though he loyally followed the Golden Order, he dies alone and broken with no reward or heroes burial.
Yeah my personal beliefs paint my personal interpretation, and I was exaggerating for comedic effect, and players are allowed to have their own personal interpretations...
BUT
D is still a weird racist fanatic and that's kinda the point of the game. Literally brining the Beast Clergyman does nothing to stop TWLID and he even admits that the quest was always doomed to fail. Death-root has spread too far, and it was all the golden Orders fault. Instead of fixing the disease, they went after the symptoms, because they don't actually care.
28:14 LORE EXPLANATION:
Earlier in the playthrough, you can find Nephli in the Albunuaric village. Gideon and his minions tortured and slaughtered the entire village looking for the other half of the Haligtree medallion. Nephli was not only horrified by her father doing this, but realized that the her home village hadn't been wiped out in random bandit attack, but Gideon had been behind that attack as well.
She found out her adopted dad was a mass murderer, and had lied to her, covering up that he had also killed her biological family and basically kidnapped her.
Im not trusting Gideon anymore man…

@@thorn.fieldnsta (It's gonna be a long one, because of all the lore details and my own ADHD) Nepheli may or may not be blood related to Godfrey. The name "Loux" might be a title similar to how "Khan" was used in Asian nomadic cultures to denote a clan leader or lordship. (which the "badlanders" are partially based on.)
Then again, Nepheli does not act like a clan leader when we meet her, holding herself more as a warrior than a leader (Then AGAIN again, Godfrey announces himself as "Hohrah Loux, Warrior" as if "Warrior" is his true title, not "Loux")
So what I think happened is this. Nepheli was part of a bandit clan in the badlands. Perhaps the same clan as Hohrah Loux. She might have even been one of his children. Based on how many children Genghis Khan had in his lifetime, and how many children Godfrey had in the "Golden Lineage" with Marika... It's not unreasonable to assume Nepheli was one of his many kids, but not like, next in line to take over the clan.
We know that Marika subjugated the badlanders when she straight up gentrified Hohrah Loux into Godfrey (a lot of thematic weight to an oppressive religious order forcing outsiders to change their names and forcing them to submit to their culture.)
We know that Godfrey's personal army (the tarnished) was separate from Marikas army, (Led by Ragagon and the Golden Order Fundamentalist.)
Since the player (a tarnished) can pick bandit as their starting class, it is a fair assumption that Nepheli was part of the assimilation, since she references her village and it's traditions (like raising hawks) (Tarnished are weirdly ageless like many FromSoft characters, especially with resurrection at play)
What I think happened, is that Godfrey either built, or gifted Stormveil castle to one of his subjects, either a badland warrior, or the funnier option, a literal magic talking hawk (as the storm king ashes suggest) I think it is pretty bad ass and magical that as Hohrah Loux, he just had a giant magical hawk that rode on his shoulder and flew into battle, clawing his enemies eyes out.
Nepheli served as a tarnished soldier, and seems to have died at some point prior or during the Long March of the Tarnished.
She was resurrected by Grace and woke up in the lands between. I assume she found her way to Roundtable hold, and Gideon took her in when she lost the guidance of grace. (Gideon is the oldest of the Tarnished, and acts like he rules the roundtable hold. While he is dismissive of the player character, he might have seen something in Nepheli that was useful to him. Either her raw strength, or perhaps her bloodline, making her a suitable candidate for Elden Lord. She was by all rights, directly related to Godfrey.)
To answer the original question, I think Godfrey didn't really care (or know) about Nepheli. He seems to be at the very least, an above average father by Elden Ring standards. (He seemed to love Morgott despite his omen status, and his clear rage towards us for killing his son. Makes me wonder if Marika banishing the omen twins to the sewer had something to do with their divorce, not just her "marrying" Radagon. Maybe Godfrey resented her and was partially willing to leave when she dumped him.)
If Godfrey even knew about Nepheli, she was #1: one child among many, #2: probably assumed she was dead, since clearly not ALL tarnished were resurrected.
Gideon didn't kidnap her from what we know, she may have been a full adult when she joined him.
She mentions seeing a similar massacre in her village, but this could mean many things.
It could have been a conflict between two bandit clans. It could have been Hohrah Loux during his "uniting" of the bandit clans.
Maybe it was carried out by Gideon's soldiers, and she didn't realize they served him until seeing the same soldiers at the Aulbinauric village. Which makes me wonder, why would Gideon's forces be out there in the badlands? Based on his tomb in the open cinematic, he was clearly wealthy or at least well respected. Poor people don't get a custom made coffin covered in ears with a personalized gargoyle just for holding your magic staff.
Gideon took her in, seeing her as nothing but a pawn. Based on how the two talk about each other, (Gideon being dismissive of her, Nepheli heaping nothing but praise on him) it's clear that Nepheli is projecting on Gideon, putting him on a pedestal as the father figure she might have been deprived of. Meanwhile Gideon sees value in her, but is also totally willing to let you turn her into a puppet on a whim. He's not super invested in her.
That's my theory at least.
We know that Kenneth Height, clearly loyal to the Golden Order recognizes some legitimate claim to at LEAST the Limgrave throne, and since Stormveil was ruled by someone with ties to Godfrey (and later taken over the Godrick, a pathetic distant relation with spurious claims to the throne) and that someone recognizes Nepheli through the Storm Hawk King. Either the storm hawk king belonged to the rightful ruler of Stormveil, and it chose Nepheli as a symbol of her legitimacy, or the Storm Hawk King was LITERALLY the king and from beyond the grave anointed Nepheli. (Also, it's kinda MORE fucked up how Godrick tortured and mutilated the hawks in Stormveil now. Like it's one thing to cut off the birds feet and graft swords to them, blinding them and attaching those fire bladders to them... But knowing the Golden Orders repeated history of stamping out the badlanders culture, it's feels way worse. They stripped them of their names, their heritage, their culture, even their bird keeping traditions, turning their holy symbols into living weapons. Fuck the Golden Order honestly... But it is also a little hopefully how both Nepheli and Hohrah Loux maintain their identities, both of them asserting confidently... "I am Nepheli Loux/Hohrah Loux... WARRIOR. With context it sounds more like a battle cry for a bigger war. A declaration that even after everything the Golden Order has done to erase them, their culture lives on, and is just as strong.)
She is recognized as Queen of Stormveil, and that seems to be the end of her journey. I'd like to think that she does away with grafting, frees the hawks and breeds new generations for the people of Limgrave to raise. She brings back what remains of her people's culture in a new land.
Which is a noble goal, but we know that Gideon knows the "higher aspersions" Marika has for the Tarnished, and probably sees ruling Stormveil as "settling". A lesser throne than Elden Lord.
On a final tragic note... In the cut content, Nepheli is killed by Gestoc.
There are unused voice lines of him finding a new arm to graft... Either Nephelis or Kenneth's...

40:49 LORE EXPLANATION: Normally there is a NPC standing where the ronin armor is. (An NPC who shall we say, stole the armor from Yuras corpse.) When you met with the frenzied flame the NPC died and is now inaccessible, dropping the armor where he was supposed to be.
I just found out you can summon shabriri to help fight Godfrey when you get the frenzied flame too
@@miamimartian7 Crazy right? I always wondered why specifically Yura was possessed by Shabriri, but between Elinora going mad from dragon communion, Okina going mad from Mohgs blood, it seems that anyone from the land of Reeds is doomed to go mad one way or another.
The fact that he killed fortissaxx that fast made me sad because we didn’t get to hear the beat drop in the second phase.

Fun fact: the Fia's Champions has a similar mechanic to the Giant Jar summons. The summoned NPCs are actually previous players that were held by Fia if you are playing online.
Some are, one is her dad and her other simp, Rogier.

There is another tiiiny surprise on the cliff behind the Stargazer Ruins (there's a path going down around the left, as you face them, coming from the bridge), to add to them jellyfishies. Because you deserve to have the whole thing, since you liked the quest.

15:57 D is known for vanquishing those who live in death. This is like all the tibia mariners, the skeletons and cemetery shades, basically anything that’s dead but alive still. While on the other hand Fia is a descendant from those who call themselves deathbed companions. They lay with those who are soon to die and in exchange for bringing them solace and warmth they have their strength absorbed. That’s what fia does to you when she holds you, a lil bit of your HP is taken. She wishes for those who live in death to be left alone and not persecuted just for existing. D see’s them as nothing but monsters and believes they should all be wiped out. That’s why Fia killed him, because they’re essentially mortal enemies due to their differing views on life and death.
Unironicaly i had no idea it was possible to fight Neil this way rotating him to avoid those trusting attacks, well done.

@@davobands Neil is a hated boss because he has very punishing AoE and ghosts to help him, but you stayed the right distance and because of your great curved swords your hitbox got under most of his attacks.

@@eclips_total2215 crazy, those knights are easy as hell to kite away and if your using a great sword or something with equivalent stagger potential they die in no time as you saw when devo used his great curved swords, I would say it’s only difficult if your using a weapon with awful stagger damage and that also relies bleed or a similar status, this is exactly why I love weapons that just have standard as their damage type, no slashing, no piercing or magic, lightning and holy and of course no poison, bleed or rot just standard because nothing is resistant to it

The “Fell Twins” are a lore hint after you beat Morgott. He was an omen, that’s why he’s “Margit, the Fell Omen” and “Morgott, the Omen King.” The hint is that there is a twin to the omen. One has a regular blade and one has a bloodflame blade.
Is that why he has the horns?

A few non-spoiler things I want to mention:
- From the map menu you can go to Roundtable Hold if you press Y, X and A in that order (or Triangle, Square and X on a Playstation controller). First input opens a list of Graces, second selects the Roundtable and third teleports. It's way faster than scrolling to the bottom every single time.
- The full lift medallion that confused you was given to you by Melina after you beat Morgott.
- In the place where you found the Ronin armor lying around there would usually be an NPC called Shabriri possessing the dead body of Yura (the guy with the Ronin armor). He would try to convince you to meet the 3 fingers and become the Lord of Frenzied Flame. But you kinda skipped this by already becoming the Lord of Frenzied Flame lol
- The ruins right after the Ronin armor have a neat little detail: There is one of those spirit animals, a squirrel or something, that runs a path through the ruins on which you fight no enemies. You just have to follow the little critter to avoid any fights. Seems like you found the exact path by yourself though, good job!
- Gideon disowned Nepheli because she found out about what he did to the Albinauric Village. That's the place in that little swamp area in the bottom left of Liurnia. Gideon is in the middle of wiping out that village to find the first half of the Haligtree medallion that Albus gave you (the old guy that was hidden as a vase, gave you the medallion and just died). That ties in to why you found Enshas armor lyíng around in Roundtable Hold. After you got the medallion, the next time you went to the Roundtable. Ensha attacked you and you killed him. It was a while ago lol
- The lost ashes of war items can duplicate ashes of war that you want to have more of. They aren't that useful if you ask me, but you can use them with Hewg, your blacksmith.
- All NPC fights (like Juno Hoslow or the Mimic Tear boss or random NPCs) have exactly 1 heal flask. But they will always try to drink it twice. So whenever they try to heal a second time, that's a huge window to attack.
Edit: I should've read the comments first, Shabriri and Gideon were already explained by other people. My bad.
But another thing I forgot: The teleporter next to Fia sent you to the Capital. That's because you could've gotten to this place by another way and then warped to the Capital without having to kill the Draconic Tree Sentinel that is stationed outside of the gate. Remember fighting two Gargoyles underground? The boss arena had a huge waterfall. There's another one of those coffins where you can lay in, that's how you could've gotten to that area as well.
FYI there's a platform you can jump onto while riding the elevator that leads to Morgott's Divine Tower that has a pretty cool little secret in it. I actually just found it today by chance.
Also, I completely agree with you about the jellyfish sisters. One of my favorite things in the game. It's like a small bright spot in such a dark game lol

I know it can be hard to pay attention to during a battle, but I recommend going to listen to Fortissax's theme!
There's nothing specific I want you to gain from it, I just really like it.

Going to the Haligtree might not be such a bad idea. If you managed to kill Niall this fast, you might not be so underlevel and, using the secret Rold medallion doesn't instantly teleport you to the Haligtree. There's quite a lot to do before reaching it that's not as hard And let me tell you, if you continue on to the rest of the main story, you will instantly encounter the very 2 worst bosses in the game when, if you head towards the Haligtree, you fight 2 of the best. And you gain access to a sick area in the underworld via a teleporter that brings you to a secret area next to Siofra River. But in the end, it's your choice. Just know you have the build and level to face most of what's on the way to the Haligtree.

There is a use for the walking mausoleums. If you ever wanted to dual wield Morgots curved sword, you can duplicate his remembrance at one of those walking mausoleums to get another. (You just have to knock the skulls off their legs)
You can't get the same weapon twice, Enya only has one in stock, you need to cycle over to NG+

Okay so basically the reason that yuras armor (ronins armor) was in the mountain tops was because in his questline he gets killed and his body is possessed by a spirit named shabriri who is apart of the frenzied flame quest. The last time you meet him he is in the spot where you found the armor. I asume that since you had already completed the frenzied flame quest he just died because he didnt serve a purpose anymore.

Hey, Davo, %100 serious; Aurelia the jellyfish summon is actually so good, not only that, but also based and WAY more clutch than you would think possible. And I cried while you returned her to her sister.
The dagger that fia gives you for you to find it’s original owner was a dagger made of silver and gold like the inseparable sword that D uses he used the dagger to remove the halowbrand from Godwyn’s back fia found it and basically needed you to find out who desecrated godwyn’s body with said dagger and once she found out it was him she killed em…and no that wasn’t D that’s his brother

It's crazy how underpowered Lichdragon Fortissax is considering how late people tend to find him in game. Like you almost didn't get to see his second phase. His theme goes so hard too.
Also I don't know if you're doing it already but the detailed descriptions for boss Rememberances give you a lot of cool lore. Fortissax's and Radahn's specially.
Also fun fact, the banished knight with 2 swords you died to in castle sol is considered one of the hardest normal enemies in the game along side royal revenants
Check the remembrance shop after killing Niall, there's a pretty good armor set there now. However, also bare in mind that if you have any interest in bigger armor sets, you might want to start pumping endurance more.

Veteran prosthesis is actually really fun to use with it's ash of war, the only fist weapon than can stance break most enemies

But EVERYONE knows the struggle of Commander Niall & since you're done with Castle Sol, I can tell you about a "glitch" or rather a bug that allows you to skip all of Castle Sol & takes you straight to the boss. Requires a little bit of parkour but you're able to jump on top of a giant tree & then jump onto the ledge of a castle piller that'll then dismount you cause you're "inside" the Castle & you can just run straight to the boss. I decided to do that in my recent NG+ playthrough in prep for the DLC

This game can be brutal and times, but when it seems borderline impossible, chances are you’re missing something. There’s always a way to bring the fight back down reasonable. It could be a specific consumable, key item, or spell, and it’s not considered cheesing.
For example: during the Commander Niall fight, if you use a bewitching branch on one, or both, of his Banished Knight summons, they will switch their loyalty to you and fight against the Commander and each other instead. Similar to using crystal darts on anything considered a golem (stone) type enemy.
FromSoft games are never unfair, they just take a bit of strategizing sometimes. That’s why item descriptions are so important. These games always give you everything you need, you just have to find it.
Bro that one knight at the fort that teleports behind you no matter what and unleashes his secret blade art like a maniac was the real boss for me, not the caelid reskin.

Davo there is a talisman in Caelid that gives you 20% more runes. (Gold scarab Talisman) Also use gold pickled foul foot for another extra 15%
55:15 they are all being summoned by one of those dudes on a boat. "Tiber" he's hiding by side of cliffs. kill him and they all die plus you get death root which you can trade with the beast man to get some dope incantations. Whenever the beast Eye Quivers it means one of those boat dudes is near by or a deathroot item.

If you really want to be rinsed of the frenzied flame, Milicent's questline is absolutely necessary for this meaning to say you have to finish it, so whenever you see her in future encounters make sure to exhaust all of her dialogues.

All I'll say is that you have to beat 2 optional bosses in 2 different areas to reverse the frenzied flame. I'm sure peeps, google, and/or maybe even reading item descriptions can help lead you in the future tho so no worries. I like that you actual do read the item descriptions too lol. Fromsoft lore goes insane, especially in this game. Loving the vids as always!

Since you are planning to do major side stuff before the end of the game (it'll be obvious when it's the end) you're pretty much on track to escape the frenzied flame, but the ONE thing you could mess up that locks you out of it has to do with Millicent... just make sure you've got her back, that's all. No need to stress about missing it though, just make the right choice when it happens.
IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOME OF THE BEST DIALOGUE IN THE GAME: After you have burned the Erdtree go talk to Hewg and Roderika in the Roundtable (You also need to have a max level weapon for the best part)

putting levels into dex is good, if you want to maximize damage make sure to put some into str as well, also since morgotts curved sword has innate arcane scaling putting levels into that (but not alot since it's a D in scaling) will increase how much bleed buildup it does.
