  • Hello Folks and welcome to my Channel.
    Today I'm Restoring this vintage wooden tool box.
    This railroader's toolbox was a true labor of love, When I first acquired this historical artefact, it was hidden beneath layers of weathered, chipped paint, so thick that it had completely obscured the original wood underneath. Rather than aiming for a flawless finish, I chose to preserve the toolbox's authentic character and unique imperfections, which told the story of its long and rugged journey.
    The initial step involved meticulously disassembling the toolbox. As I carefully removed the myriad screws and hinges, I was struck by the aged wood and the history it carried within its grain. This toolbox had been a faithful companion to someone, and I was determined to honour its legacy.
    After disassembling the pieces, I turned to a sandblaster to strip away the layers of paint that concealed the wood's inherent beauty. The abrasive power of the machine revealed the natural grain patterns and rich tones that had been hidden for so many years. It was an exciting moment as the wood's unique blemishes and markings came to light.
    While the exterior now bore the scars of time and use, I chose not to repair or conceal the imperfections in the timber. These marks told a tale of the toolbox's history, and I wanted to preserve them as part of its character. The toolbox's blemishes were a testament to its long service in the hands of railroaders, and I celebrated them as a vital part of its story.
    To protect the wood and enhance its inherent beauty, I applied a generous coat of linseed oil. This not only deepened the natural colors but also acted as a protective barrier against future wear and tear.
    The vintage railroader's toolbox emerged from its restoration as a beautifully rejuvenated piece of history. It now proudly showcases its journey through time, complete with the imperfections that bear witness to its many years of service. Restoring this toolbox was labour-intensive yet fulfilling process, allowing me to honour the legacy and preserve the unique character of this cherished relic.

      It was my grandfather's and he used it as a toolchest. He was in the Australian army so it may have come from there. Not saying it was an ammo box as I feel mine is bigger but less sturdy.

    Never seen the dry agitate in an ultrasonic tank method. I'm going to try that tomorrow. I did a similar job on a WW1 ammunition box. A very interesting box, if you have not seen one, check them out. Have also had good results sandblasting antique wood window frames. I cut the pressure back a bit and vary my angle to try and avoid digging into the grain too much.

    • @Austeration
      @Austeration  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes I did find blasting the wood tricky. I can imagine the softer parts of the wood getting chewed out quicker. Thanks I will check the boxes you mentioned 👍

    I’ve never been a fan of sandblasting wood but after seeing your results, I changed my mind. The beautiful timber underneath that paint seemed to soak up the oil. The oiled timber and heat blued metalwork compliment each other perfectly. I’m dying to know how you came up with using blasting media in an ultrasonic cleaner. You watch, everyone will start to use that method now.
