During WWII in UK, vast numbers of women were called up to work in munitions factories, as mechanics, and in logistics - including the late Queen Elizabeth II. Only men being conscripted seems wrong from a gender equality and resources perspective. Plenty of countries conscript both men and women. I realise this is a sensitive topic for some, but IMO it needs to be openly broached. Thank you for starting the discussion, Jonathan!

The old saying : “A stitch in time saves nine.” Europe must rather contend with the fact that is must make provision now for funds for saving Ukraine, than having eventually to fight a war of attrition on their own doorstep with Nato troops. The cost will be enormous, in relation to what is being given now to Ukraine to fight Russia with Ukraine’s own troops. Even Ukrainian pensioners are fighting to save their country and keep Europe safe to prepare, should the occasion arise.

Worried about Europe. Worried about USA. I think more discussion and education needs to be shared about features of dictatorships and autocracies.

    • @parcomolo256
      @parcomolo256 Před měsícem

Not all UN member states' sovereignty is intact. Many countries in Europe have ceded (some of their) sovereignty to the European Union - an entity that isn't a member of the United Nations.

    • @davidhowse884

@@parcomolo256 To my knowledge every country in the EU is recognised as a sovereign state by the UN. Every country within the EU is free to withdraw from the EU as UK has done, so they wish. There is no comparison between EU countries in the EU and the Donbas or Crimea being annexed by Russia, all but around 4 countries not recognising these annexations. There is a difference between aggressive expansionism and democratic decisions made by individual countries.

Seems like a pretty solid and sensible way to organise things if you want to function as a viable, strong and stable community. Cyprus in its current form is obviously in a unique situation and is a beneficiary of additional supportive and stabilising structures provided by the EU, for the time being. The great thing about the EU is that no country is forced to join nor remain, as Britain chose to prove, for some “reason”… 😂

    Good morning, Jonathan.
I'd like to further discuss and consider your broken fence scenario. Yes, if you dont know who is responsible, you need to pay to repair. But if you do know who is responsible, you can sue to get the culprits to repay you for the costs.
For me, this is a perfect example! We all need to support Ukraine as much as we can, no matter what. Most countries dont have a substantial "rainy day fund" to draw from. Countries are going into debt to support Ukraine, which means our citizens will be paying down this debt for generations.
When Russia loses this war, why stop at reparations for Ukraine? We all know who the culprit is! Once Ukraine is rebuilt, why shouldn't Russia also need to make reparations to all countries and EU, who have financially supported Ukraine? Russia broke international law when they invaded Ukraine. International Law has to mean something, otherwise, why have it?
Let me give an analogy. An arsenist burns down my house and i have no insurance. My community gets together and helps me rebuild, both financially and in labour. If the arsonist later gets caught and is successfully sued, does he just need to repay me or does he repay all those who contributed?
Here's my plan. Once Russia loses, sanctions are only lifted once reparations are agreed to. As a condition, a percentage of all oil/gas/natural resources are skimmed off the top for reparations, starting with Ukraine. This is the way the Russian economy has worked for years and the Russian people didnt complain. May force the people to rise up against the corruption so they can maintain their standard of living. Why should our grandchildren be paying off this debt while Russian oligarch continue to buy more yachts?
It would have a world wide impact and I think would have aggressive countries think twice before starting a invading a souverign country.
Anyway, just an idea i have been thinking about.

      Very good proposal.
      Got exactly the same idea.
I've been calling for more than a year for 15 trillion dollars just for Ukraine. International compensation on top.
Russians should have learned a lesson after 1945. They haven't.
21st century should have other modalities than 20th century. Everyone has had enough time to understand the UN principles of peaceful global coexistence.
YT didn't like my previous comment. It included new international mechanism (UN or new UN) to prevent such flagrant violation of the principles.

One has to be careful in victory, if victory happens. Learning from history, over burdensome payments are simply met with printing and devaluing currency so much that reparations becomes almost nothing. The effect on the citizens though is tragic, with all savings wiped out, and economic ruin. The resultant resentment tends to guarantee more war in the future.

I don't agree with your interpretation of why Ukraine didn't build fortification. It had nothing to do with ceeding that land in negotiations. It is entirely internal for Ukraine. The people on the "outside" of the trenches would feel abandoned. The government didn't want to alienate those people. So, they did nothing, setting the stage for russia to move through the countryside much easier now. Dumb politician decision.
It is long past time to boot russia off the UN security council and replace them with Ukraine. The rational and process has been described.

When we help it's never enough or too much meddling, and when we stay out we're still demonized. Get so much flak from our allies it seems like if the roles were reversed... No one would come to our aid.
Which is why I'm glad that we make preparations to take on literally everyone. It'd be nice to get some appreciation, rather than a what have you done for me lately all the time.
But no doubt Ukraine's fight is our fight so we need to support but how bout less hate because when it comes down to it... We're the only ones as it stands now, that can actually defeat the Axis that's forming.

I don't think anyone has suggested that the world is "fair".
And if you postulate that it should be, you would run headlong into the problem of "universal" fairness - and morality, equality, reciprocity etc.
How much should one be willing to sacrifice on the alter of altruism, or how much is the relative negative individual impact compared to illusive global gains in any given situation?
"Fairness" might be possible in a bilateral setting, but breaks down once you start adding parties.
Getting to a Pareto-optimal equilibrium is a never-ending struggle in a multiple saddle-points ridden utility n-space (ie. not convex sets).
The greater the distance to a problem, the weaker the direct palpable consequences.
Showing how non-involvement or only cursory engagement will have ramifications everywhere - even at one's local level - becomes paramount to get the necessary support.

@@ATPGeo Yep. As an atheist I try to discourage 'magical thinking' but I think even I am prone to it on occasion. Perhaps it's in our DNA.
Even though the Ukrainian's are the good guys that doesn't mean they are automatically going to 'win'.
We are all probably influenced by the stories we are told in books and films as children to think 'goodness' is rewarded in the end.
I suppose population groups of humans have to promote group harmony by encouraging 'positive' behaviour and optimism.

The fact that Ukraine didn't prepare defensive lines like Russia did was a huge mistake by the last commander in chief of the Ukrainian military. Ukraine put everything in to the counter offensive and when it didn't work i don't understand why they didn't start building the lines. I totally support Ukraine and don't want to put the leadership down but I am scared Russia will keep moving forward and Ukraine won't have the man power to stop them without really strong defensive lines.

They didn't because Ze did not want to fund it, the councils did not want to fund it. Ze did not want to antagonize his oligarchs and did not want to take advice from General Naiev let alone Zaluzhny (all sacked).
Also, He probably did not want to do it because it was the idea of that traitor and loudmouth Arestovych.😁

In a recent post JP ranted on about the difference in the treatment of prisoners of war between the ukrainians and the russians. He always mentions the dozens of videos that he has seen of russians killing ukrainians in cold blood but fails to aknowledge the videos of ukrainians doing the same to russians. The last time he did this the tenor was very sanctamonious. All this stuff about "us in the west, holding up humanistic values, etc, and the russians as 'moral monsters'" or words to that effect. Well that 'lecture' of his was given just a couple of days before the 'aniversary' of what happened in Abu Graib. Oh how easy it is to have moral amnesia in wartime. Having said this, I still think that JP is the best, and certainly the most prolific blogger out there reporting on this war. The thing I like the most about him is that he only ever says racist things about the russians when quoting others. That can't be said other other bloggers. Operator Starcky said : "the russians are not human". Ukraine Matters said: "Russians are murderers" and Denys Davidov said : "the russians are barbarians". Germans talked about jews in similar terms in the 1920-1930s and we all know where that ended. One final note that doesn't pardon what russians are doing but puts it into perspective. Russians don't just regularly kill wounded ukrainian soldiers, for example in the Cyclops Bastion south of Avdivka recently, but they also by all account, regularly 'finish off' their own wounded. There is a moral difference between both sides, I agree with that, but how pronounced it is will be a task for historians to figure out.

"People believe that the world is fair". Who does he mean? I have never met anybody in my 62 years on this planet who believed that "the world is fair". JP has 'dug up' another obsolete and redundant philosophical theory based on a false generalisation and tries to 'sell' it as a truth statement. He often does this. I wish he wouldn't.

The world isn't fair. It just is. And I agree, the 'rest' of the world needs to throw all its weight behind Ukraine because...
      1. It is the decent thing to do, and
      2. The war is essentially Putin and his minions chipping away at one country after another in an attempt at World domination. If we don't stop them now, we are all going to be poorer in people, resources and cash.
Seriously, thank you for your continued coverage of the war. You continually add depth to my understanding of what the hell is going on.
