If you watch how NFL officials spot the ball, NOW they tend to start a drive exactly on a yard line mark when we know darned well not every change of possession ends exactly on a yard line. That eliminates the need for the chains. Under Art McNally, that wasn't the case. If the ball was dead at the 18-yard and 16-inch line, by gosh, that's where the chains were set. I think Mike Pereira implemented this "every new series starts on a yard line" system. It also makes keeping statistics easier.

When a runner is tackled close to a first down, it's so obvious that refs are cheating when you see them look for the hashmark before deciding on where to place the football. 98% of the first down, or the chains are spotted on the hashmark. Most times when a runner is tackled, the true spot is somewhere between the hashmarks but u will notice on first downs like I said, the chains are spotted at the beginning of the hash mark. This way it allows the refs to decide if they want it to be inches short of a first or if the spot the nose of the ball touching the hash, on e the chains come, they know it will be a first! Back to my original point, the refs shouldnt need to look at the hash, THEY SHOULD KEEP THEIR EYES ON THE SPOT WHERE THE BALL WAS WHEN THE RUNNER WAS DOWN. If they don't keep their eyes on that spot, they will lose that spot. It been entertaining AND IRRITATING for me to watch the refs decide whether to give up the first or not!
