    Many famous and popular slap riffs are actually fairly tricky for beginners.
    Today's riff is written specifically for this lesson and allows you to practice the basic techniques of both slapping and popping, your note control in the fretting hand, a clean technique by way of muting and your hammer on's.
    It’s an incredibly simple riff from a musical standpoint, but it’s packed with content for subtle focused practice.

    I signed up for the two slap bass courses by this bloke during lockdown a couple of years ago and the lessons are incredible. I dive in and out of lessons now for new inspiration. Definitely the best online, well worth it. Great fun.

    I have been trying to slap for about 4 years ( I can "slap" to my own songs, sort of) . After hearing Mark king say you must split it into 16ths & then watching this I finaly understand it. A fabulous lesson.

    I'm a bouncer myself. For some reason I can never get that follow through one where the thumb stops on the next string. Not sure why, it seems like it shouldn't be that hard haha.

    Happy New year from Australia! at 62 I have just started back learning bass after 20 years, I couldnt slap then and guess I never will be able to! Just realized at my age I need a short scale, after only 2 days playing your 12 bar blues lesson on my old fender P I can't move my wrist lol, Its that little finger stretch on the Major scale :( Subscribed thanks.

    Slap is just my favourite! Last year I started the steps to slap bass course and the journey has been just fantastic. The only thing I hate is how often the strings need changing to maintain that clear zing. Happy New year to all of you slappers!

      If you find your strings go 'dull' quite quickly, maybe try coated strings such as those made by Elixir, for example? I have found that they stay 'fresh' considerably longer than normal strings.

    This would have been extraordinarily useful when I started. Could not figure out how to slap. Took me about two weeks to figure it out. The action on my bass is so low it rattles like crazy unless I play very softly. That also meant bouncing was impossible. I eventually figured out how to strike through the string. Yesterday I raised the action to eliminate the buzzing and damn, my playing sounds so much better now. Benefit to learning the strike through method, is like you said, easier learning of double thumbing.

    @TalkingBass ..I do all my hammer ons with my pinkie. It's probably because I started with 6 guitar in the 80s for a couple years. But my ring finger is my weak, dummy finger. Any advice?
    I do try to get my ring finger involved more and I've been following all your videos for 3 yrs now. You go BASS JEDI.

    How do you stop the E string from ringing when slapping the A string that is tricky

  • @ianmackenzie686
    @ianmackenzie686 Před rokem +5

    As a general rule, do the E and A strings get the thump from the thumb and the D and G get pull with the finger?
    I've avoided this style of bass playing for years...

    • @GrupettoGaz2905
      @GrupettoGaz2905 Před rokem +1

      As a general rule Ian, I'd say "yes", - certainly with simple riffs like this one, containing octaves. With more complex lines the D & G strings do sometimes get slapped by the thumb, but it really depends on the exact context of the line.

    You talk so much, but as everyone else you are not telling how hard to slap it?

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 7 měsíci

      As I’ve mentioned on many slap videos, the strength of slap is unimportant. It’s the technique and having new strings that makes for the slap tone. I can slap hard or soft and it makes no difference.
