      I would love to. I just turned 50 and feel like its to late for me to. I would have to do whatbyou did as well. My 2 sons are growing upand will be out of the house soon and I have been married to someone who would not enjoy this life style:(

      I watch some other channels on homesteading who started older than 50. Its never too late! Some still live close to towns as well. In Alaska you can basically live "remote" and still get Starbucks! :-) Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

      You're a very fortunate lady, living in such a gorgeous country where you can live amongst the trees and enjoy nature. I did sorta the same thing, but I bought a nice old house on a quarter acre four hours drive from the city, and I love living here on my own! it's in a small country town surrounded by mountains and vineyards. My kids are all grown up, two of my boys are interstate and with the way things are going in Australia, we may not hug each other for years. If I lived in the US, I would have moved to Alaska as well. What an amazing wealth of beauty it has! the wildlife would be a little scary but the sound those wolves made me long to go there. Good on you for listening to your heart, I wish you and your sweet dog all the happiness in the world 😊

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska

      Four hours from the city sounds perfect! Sounds like you are very fortunate as well :-) Nothing better than living in a small country town. Everyone is so nice to each other and helpful. Australia is beautiful country and I love seeing documentaries about it. Since I probably will never get a chance to go there. But I don't even plan to go back to the lower 48 either :-) I really miss my children as well but they get to see my life through this channel and we communicate more now even if its just to tell me how to make my videos better :-) Thank you so much for the view and the comment and I wish you happiness as well!

    Being alone is a wonderful place to be.
    I have been married, had children, there are grandchildren and great grandchildren in my resume, however all through my life my husband's and children said I was a pioneer woman.
    For a long time, I'm 74 now, I dreamed of having a homestead, fully self sustainable.
    At different times I did, until my husband's wanted something else so we moved where they wanted to go.
    Your life is what you want and your happy.
    I became a nomad traveling where I want to go. Someday I might want to buy a place when and if I find it.
    Be safe and be happy. I love your videos and your life choice.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před rokem

      I get asked about that all the time! Yes I love the solitude out here! So quiet sometimes you can hear your heart beat. Its very therapeutic. I don't have grandchildren yet. But I know I will someday! My kids know that I will never leave Alaska now that I am here! I sacrificed plenty for most of my life and its my turn to live the life I want! Someday I may even get to share this homestead with someone but even if that doesn't happen, you can't beat this lifestyle! Always something to do and I love it! I almost did the RV life! I know that would have been fun too but I can't even imagine not living here now! I am so happy you are enjoying my channel Denise! It is an honor to have you along for my journey! 😉💚

    I think alot of people don't understand the solace us introverts find in being alone or just keeping company with animals.
    I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada and off the beaten path, I'm very content to putter in my garden, make amazing meals and hang out with my 2 GSD'S.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety +2

      It does confuse some people. My family included. I had many friends and coworkers and enough boyfriends when I was in Colorado. I just enjoyed going to the mountains and camping by myself more!😉 Well with my dog Kenai! Just something so freeing about it. I don't really get bored so I can keep busy cooking and yeah I enjoy chores. Maybe not bringing in firewood so much! 🤣 But just sitting outside and listening to the wind in the trees is just so relaxing. Add a beer to that and oh yeah, I'm good! Welcome Twisted Frannie from Nova Scotia! So cool! 😁

Be safe and keep loving that pup of yours , lots of hugs n cuddles . love your 2 interactions..especially holding paws . My buddy passed away I held his paw every night for 12 years to sleep . It's special .

That's so awesome! 🧡 Kenai is the same way. As long as I am holding his paw or just put a finger on his fur, he is content and snoring! 😴🙄 It would be an honor to have you along for my journey here! I just discovered your channel today (Feb 2023), but it is great so far! You are an inspiration for me--my Dad loved the outdoors, and we did canoe trips, camping trips as a family, including 2 2-week stints in the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada. I have been hooked on this kind of lifestyle ever since. After growing up in St. Louis and then the last 40 years in the Phoenix, AZ, area, I am so sick of big city living, and thankfully, at nearly 62 I am in good shape and good health--my goal is to make it to Alaska and make this later stage of my life a grand adventure. Thanks for your videos--I look forward to catching up!

    Catching up on early vids. As far as me living alone in a remote area, although I am an introvert, I like to live near (within a mile) of a neighbor or two, mostly because lots can happen where one might need a friend nearby. Also, an occasional get-together with a few good friends is always nice, like a monthly book group or a full moon gathering or the occasional potluck. But I'm with you that living in the city sucks.

    Alone, I found your channel last week and have been watching your journey, catching up! I can so relate to your story. I am now 62 years old and after living in 5 states and following my father, then my husband's careers, I moved. Almost two years ago, I had the same revelation. Why am I still in Oklahoma? After 40 years of raising a family, divorce, and retiring from a career, things changed. I needed to move and decided for once to choose MY favorite. I was born in OR and lived in CA as a child. I visited WA, once in 2007, and had traveled all over the US for many years, alone. I choose Washington State. I live about an hour south of the Canadian border and about 10 miles east of the water. It is a valley where most of WA's fruit, flowers and vegetables are grown. I live a simple, inexpensive existence and couldn't be happier!!! The weather is mild all year, with seasonal changes and not the extreme weather I had endured. YOU go girl!! I totally get you. BTW, I am an introvert too and am happy to explore and live alone. I visit with people, on my terms. 😉

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety +2

      That is SO COOL! I love it Catherine! You know I almost moved to Washington State as well. I had it narrowed down to Alaska, Washington or Montana. None of the realtors I contacted in Washington or Montana ever called me back! But to be honest I wanted to move to Alaska anyway! Your little spot of heaven sounds perfect! It's funny though right?! You just realize one day "what the heck" and your eyes open up to go live your dream! I do love living alone (with Kenai) but yeah, ain't nobody visiting me out here unless I say so. And they couldn't find me anyway! 🤣 We introverts should start a yearly convention that nobody would go to! 🤣 Thank you so much for your comment Catherine! You take care! 😁

When I go to town to resupply, I just can't relax until I hit open road again. It's like a big weight has been lifted.😜 I'm sure many don't understand that feeling from just going to town but when you live remote, it's just a whole new experience. Reminds you of why you left it. Even after a 17 hour drive, when I see my cabin, I just start grinning! 😁Thank you for joining my journey and please feel free to give me any advise 😉 Thank you Lyn!

    I love Kenai immensely, he was so funny sitting over you.
    He just loves you so much, it was hilarious with him looking love drunk. I think he enjoyed smelling your hair.
    I started fantasizing about Alaska after discovering and getting into the 'reruns' of the TV show Northern Exposure in the late 90s, never having had any prior interest in Alaska as I'm not crazy about the cold weather at all, - but now I'm over done with the brutal humid long Summers in Savannah.
    I battle with my mind realizing I'm in the perfect spot but having been born here I need to be able to look where I'm at and have it be nothing like what it does here. Which is absolutely beautiful and I wish I could just stay here but I can't. I just don't want to be here anymore and I'm ready for a whole new change and like you, I have had this fantasy about the old Wild West too.
    Watching that TV show really pulled me into wanting to go to Alaska and actually do exactly what you're doing.
    However a few years back, while surfing the net, I unexpectedly came across a little riverfront property in Southern Colorado in a very small remote little town and spontaneously bought it sight unseen because the price was absolutely excellent and it's legal for off-grid living. I was finally able to make it there from Savannah Georgia 10 months later and it will still be a few years until I can afford to renovate my home here/sell it and finally move to Colorado. Meanwhile I watch videos like yours, and live vicariously through channels like this while planning in my mind on the details of my future and ideas of a tiny Off-Grid home and figuring it all out at age 55.
    I'll also be doing it all alone with no plans for a man troubling my life.
    Same, I'm soooo content with my pets and my own solitude.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety

      Kenai is a goof ball and a huge teddy bear! He is a spoiled brat!
      I loved watching Northern Exposure! I don't think I have seen all of the episodes but it was a fun show to watch. Savannah GA (just like Colorado) is gorgeous country but just over populated. Out here, life just slows down! I love it! And I was ready for the change! I have been dreaming this life for so long! Rebuilding a cabin is a huge undertaking! I didn't get my property for a steal because the previous owners still loved this property. I think they would have been perfectly fine not selling it. It had been on the market for many years. I truly believe nobody bought it because of the roof. In fact I passed on the property because of the roof. But when I flew to Alaska and saw the property in person, I made an offer on the spot for full asking price! And the owners where happy that I loved the property as is and had no intensions of tearing it all down and starting over.
      At 55 years young, you will be fine! just know your limitations and get help when needed. You may only need to hire a man for awhile! 😁 But the solitude is SO worth it and pets just make it all better! I wish you all my best in your renovation project! Colorado is a great state if you are out in the country! And I hope my channel can help you out in every way possible! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

To come out here and live alone in a remote location is just not something people do. At least not normal people.🤪 I had to make that decision to leave my family and coworkers and yes I miss them all, but I would not change a thing! My kids contact me more than they ever did when I lived in the city. My coworkers are always just fascinated about my life out here. Family seems to be the number one reason people do not make that final leap! Too bad they all don't want to live in Alaska! How perfect would that be! Kenai is my companion out here and we protect each other. And Merry Christmas to all of you as well! Live your Dream Robert! 🧡

    My wife and I live in Wasilla and have been here since 2000. We plan on retiring somewhere which has much milder winters once we retire. We have children and grandchildren here as well as in the lower 48 but I often find myself fighting depression here, especially during the long winters. I give you credit for being remote and having little to no interaction with people but I couldn’t do it even as an introvert myself. I love nature and the outdoors which is why we will probably head somewhere in the Southwest or Southeast areas. How do you deal with not being able to visit with your children?

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety +6

      Once my kids moved out to pursue their dreams , I was pretty much all by myself already. It was when I realized that I was coming home from work to an empty house (except for Kenai) that it really made no difference if I continued to live alone in Colorado or Alaska. I could stop planning to live in Alaska and just do it. But to be honest, starting this CZcams channel has brought us closer, even if it is just to roast me on my videos :-) They seem to actually want to visit me to make sure I am ok. As far as interactions with people, its more or less never been an issue for me being an introvert even if I have to overcome that posting videos. The long winters in Alaska are tough, as you well know, but for me, the solitude brings me sanity. The Southeast/west have some great places to live though and with far less snow :-)

      @Living in Alaska, I recommend checking out Savannah Georgia,..If you haven't already done so. The crime isn't too bad, aside from lately we've had some shootings which I have grown accustomed to a pattern happening where it's temporary to see this and it's typically not long-term and with those being involved in such a thing, these are usually a group of people instigating this within their own group.
      I recommend the areas of, and in this order...
      Isle of Hope, Burnside Island, Wilmington Island.
      Savannah is very shaded having huge big beautiful trees almost everywhere and also palm trees. I hope you'll look up pictures of how our rare Spanish Moss decorates the trees.
      The cost of living is very affordable, there are affordable homes and the prices have not gone skyrocketing like certain cities.
      Even though the price of fuel has gone up everywhere it's still not that bad here as compared to other cities and everything is close to everything you need.
      The tourism here makes it to where there is always something to do and plenty to see.
      I will warn you though, we have very hot Long Summers and the humidity is high but we are in close proximity to Hilton Head Island South Carolina where they have a beach and we have Tybee Island.
      We are not the type of city that has interstate highways running through the city, aside from a couple of Parkways and bypasses. Also the city is easy to navigate being on a grid.

Saves a couple hours of driving on those trips not having to go into Anchorage.

      Ahh thank you! I am very proud of myself that I finally made my life long dream come true. Living in Alaska has always been that one place I knew I had to be. The daily life is rougher and sometimes scary but so worth it. I know of Paxson but have never been there. I did watch the video you posted when you went to pick up your daughters trailer. Great scenery on that drive! I did preorder half a cow and pig for next winter and I've heard nothing but great things about Mat-Valley Meats. I do love to shop at Three Bears too. And I very rarely go into Anchorage itself unless I am dashing around trying to find something specific. Its always Wasilla or Palmer :-) Just easier to say Anchorage.

    Thanks for sharing your story and journey, as I wish you and Kenai all the best and good health. Congratulations on your success! I have lived a number of my years in the bush; however, currently I find myself living in a Matsu Borough town. You can understand I am trying to find an affordable "remote" piece of land on the road system....with or without an existing rustic cabin. There are just too many people here where I live and all the incompatible attitudes you can imagine. The AK state land sales and auctions are no longer affordable for common folks. Any tips, leads, guidance, or strategies that you could share would be much appreciated. Thanks and the video was well done and quite enjoyable.

      You are lucky to be here in Alaska and looking. At least you can drive around and walk the properties when one comes up!😁 I know Free Spirit Jim has been looking for awhile too! He is out there all the time but I guess a lot of properties are in really bad shape? It's funny because I still browse Zillow looking at properties. I am not looking to buy more land just habit I think! 🤣 You know there are still some of the same properties I considered my second and third choices still listed?? 😲 And I would say that I was looking for YEARS! This property was the ONLY one that made me buy a plane ticket. I guess what I am saying is, it may take some time but it's worth it. 🤗Your perfect place will just come up one day and it will all just be life changing after that! I still say Zillow is the best place to look since it lists every single listing though. I know you will find that perfect property soon! 🧡💚

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska 👍 Thank you much for your kind words of encouragement and for the Zillow tip! I've been mainly checking the remote property lists, but now I can expand my search. I am also encouraged by your success and determination. All the best to you and Kenai.....be well.

      Oh one last thing about Zillow! On the left side where you see all the listings, if you click on the (top) part that says "Other listings" those tend to be the for sale by owner! When I contacted anyone there, they responded super fast! Contacting a realtor is a good idea sometimes too. Two that I spoke to in the beginning of my search basically saved me from making big mistakes. Property full of muskeg or property with a road access but only accessible by snowmachine in winter! Good luck! And I still search Zillow when I have a moment! I will let you know if something nice pops up! 🧡💚

He is blind, but very independent has two post grads and a masters all with a 4.0. In a way you are like him. I mean learning to live a completely different life with real challenges not just traffic problems lol, and learning how to ebb and flow in this new life. My brain would shut down with first roof sloffing or my car not starting. Lol😳 Never mind being face to face with wolves, coyotes and bears Oh My!!!😂😳

    Hello! I started at episode #1 and I am fascinated to see how it goes. I share your thought about living alone in a remote location. I used to solo backpack in the wilderness of California sometimes for a couple weeks at a time. I always hated to leave. It always felt like I was leaving my home. I just wanted to say hi for now and will now binge watch until I catch up. Springtime will be here before you know it.
