  • January, 2021: Josh Swan of J.W. Swan Boatworks is a sawyer, arborist, educator, boatbuilder, and boat restorer who lives in Ashland, Wisconsin. Andrew Guest, shipwright and Rosalind's owner, visited last winter to pick up half of the larch planking stock he bought from Josh, then, in this video, returns in October, 2020 to pick up the rest and to raid Josh's piles for other useful things. In this video, Josh talks about why larch makes for great planking, is lovely to harvest, and is appropriate for Rosalind. Andrew talks about the other wood he selects, and where that wood will be put to work on Rosalind. Andrew finds some Cornish pasties in the Upper Peninsula. And finally, we pay tribute to Captain Luc Maheu, who died tragically and suddenly in October. To come: more toolmaking, rudder design and building, and as requested, a primer on the goos and glues used in Rosalind's construction.
Rosalind, a vernacular working sailboat built in St. Ives by William Paynter, has had a long and well traveled life. She's being rebuilt in Mystic, Connecticut by Andrew Guest, a boatbuilder and restorer who had already been thinking about building a lugger when he found this one destined for the chainsaw in Oxford, Maryland. Subscribe to this channel to follow her extensive restoration.

Came to your site because of the guys on "Acorn to Arabella." Enjoy watching large pieces of wood being incorporated into sailing craft. From the third coast.

edited to add: continuing to make progress on the shop. I finally paneled over that ugly insulation inside. You guys came out about a month too soon. Glad you three (and the truck) made it here and back. Eager to have you back in Lake Superior country again soon. Keep up the great work. -Josh

That kind of dense-growth larch makes extremely superior frame for windows, old windows from 100+ years ago were made of this type of wood, and has rot resistency that is unbelievable.

At last, I now know what Hakamatak (spelling?) is, been idly wondering. How did the Pasty rate?
It's soggy in Cornwall today, very, very soggy.
Happy New Year and all the best to you and Rosalind in '21.

Thank you, and to you! Well I still wish I was there, have to say the real Cornish ones are better but in this heathenish pasty deficient land it was a tolerable substitute!

Thanks! It draws some ire from the norwegians around here, along with my "parking for swedes only" sign outside. Both the flag and sign I inherited from my dad's workshop.
