Can one be said to be alive if one can't make judgements for oneself? A tree lives because it may move towards the sun. If our movements are controlled and dictated by another, are not they living us, aren't we as dead as the marionette? To exist, bare life, is not living.

When I saw "compliance culture" I thought he was going to talk about how people in western civs are scared to lose what they have speaking out, standing up for the right thing, and straying from the crowd/govt control.
I'd like a video on that, how govt has people by the ballz for 1 single reason- not enough people willing to stand with anyone who dares to oppose them.

The decline in trust is due to the breakdown of society. The Australian legal system is untrustworthy as it only delivers supposedly justice to those that can afford it, the family home has broken down with domestic violence and substance abuse at an all time high. For a society/government to be trusted they must do what they say they will do, not just parrot words to get back in power. We as a society need to be able to have faith that our government, courts, police and other institutions operate with a high level of integrity...doing the right thing because that’s what they should be doing, not just mouthing the words.

    • @isaacmcpeek9636

And the ultimate trust must be in God not that everyone must be extremely religious or think exactly biblically like I do but that society must be grounded in Christiandom of right & wrong not being subjectly different for each individual. Wrong is wrong and we all live in the same reality even if you don't think you do. We aren't grounded in truth anymore. Thats the problem everyone has their own "truth"

Apparently the reason Boy Scouts shake hands with the left hand was because when Lord Baden Powell was in Africa he saw the Ashanti tribesman did the same and shaking of the left hand required the tribesman to put down his shield whilst still holding in his right his weapon. Thus being unable to protect himself from a blow meant having to 'trust' the other person.

I can date the ‘lack of trust’ to the early 90s. My 5 year old went to school and I re-entered the workplace. Two things: very lowly paid NHS workers became obsessed with departmental budgets and all boasted that they mistrusted everyone. It was culture shock for me. Where, do you suppose that came from?

The big organisations and institutions have become so complex that they need automated systems in order to be able to operate. The systems then control the people and the people manipulate the system for their own personal benefit. Apple is a great example of this - a company with superb products and a slick interface with consumers. But try and complain and the customer service people are given lines from script saying how sorry they are about your situation and then tell you they can't do anything about your issue because the system won't let them or offer a poor compromise. The words sound sincere on a surface level but you come away with a really bad taste in your mouth and the overall feeling is the exact opposite of sincerity.
Banks are just as bad with their big social responsibility schemes or whatever happens to be the latest focus but with a system running the show, there is no human passion behind any of these initiatives and it's all about manipulating the public's perception.

Interesting the difference between the lack of trust in institutions in the USA and Ireland, for example. In the USA very little change and what change that has occured is as much to do with the media than fact. Whereas in Ireland every single old pillar of society has been torn apart over the last 30 years. Most for the better but some, not so much.

  • @Mark_Dyer1
    @Mark_Dyer1 Před 4 lety +3

At the root of the 'trust' of which Professor Ferguson speaks, lies the Judea-Christian inheritance of 'Western' civilisation: but there is an inherent weakness (particularly) in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. These were theological teachings: about the nature of The Father. They were not, first-and-foremost, a code of ethics. The 'Golden Rule' was not at their heart. At their heart was the ancient message of the Hebrew people: IF you love God, and repent of your sins, THEN you will behave accordingly. God's prevenient LOVE comes first: then that engenders our response (or ought to). The 'weakness' of this message is that it is fine whilst you are confronting similarly-minded 'people of goodwill'. But, what if you meet someone of 'ill-will' toward you and your society? In the words of Douglas Murray, "The masochist is fine, all the while he is play-acting: but what happens when a masochist meets a TRUE sadist?" The West today is confronting numerous ideologies of ill-will. Islam, Marxism, and Globalism are just three: and their adherents do not wish us well. For this reason - and in accordance with the teachings of the exiled Chaldean Catholic Archbishop of Mosul (who confronts Islam in its 'purest' form) - we need to 'suspend' our usual liberal attitudes of 'tolerance' and 'gentility'; and take some VERY brave decisions which will compromise our finer instincts. BUT, this needs a Political Class which is on OUR side. And that we do not have.

Banks & Politicians are ethically and morally bankrupt, the intellectuals took long enough to figure this out.
Bankers: We'll take your money and "invest" it. No, you can't get it back.
Politicians: Do as I saw, not what I do.

Niall Ferguson has failed to identify the core mechanism that caused the GFC of 2008, glancing upon it when mentioning regulations, and that's the government. It was made law that the banks MUST give loans to minorities, regardless of their ability to pay it back or not because to deny them was considered racist. This extended to entire communities in the form of NINJA loans (no income, no job and no assets) thus mortgages came into being that were dead weight. That dead weight was packaged with other assets (loans) that were equally useless and sold so that they could regain just some of the loss incurred by the coercion of these regulation and laws. Eventually, the bubble collapsed as the money just wasn't coming in.

    • @samharkin9981
      @samharkin9981 Před 4 lety

@Max Raider I understand your concern but it's a lack of diversity of mind and ultimately the expansion of government that has corrupted so much. Look at the Dodd-Frank act of 2010. Paraded as punishing and regulating the banks. It instead destroyed the smaller banks that place commercial and competitive pressure on the big guys to compete, and further entrenched even more government into the sector. There's no crisis so bad, government can't make worse sadly.

    The spoke in the wheel
In the age of Langu the word went on trial
and spoke with it’s tongue in the land of denial
to an audience riddled to the bone full of fear
and willing to sacrifice what once it held dear
I dare you to say how it is that you feel
cried a student more prone to the cult of ideal
Alright said the hydra and spat out its venom
But I don’t really wish to end up like John Lennon
Shot in the back from the shadows where hid
the morbid recluse with the miserable grid
and what if I tell you what you don’t want to hear
will you poke out my eye and spit in my ear
But of course came the retort of the misguided fane
and we’ll denounce your family and tarnish your name
then we’ll rewrite your story and completely erase
any mention or murmur to our current malaise
For it’s not in our interest this pursuit of the truth
redefining our plans whilst misleading our youth
our aim is more subtle our goal is quite clear
to put words in the mouth of everyone here
whilst erecting a statue to our lord Tedium
standing proudly upon our resplendent museum
from where those that pass through catch a glimpse of the dead
exchanging existence for someone else’s instead
of living their own in their own unique way
hence reliving their sentence thus repeated each day
Then stop said the hydra for I shall not let you through
for life has more purpose than the voo that you do
and if I need to bite you then I certainly will
even though that I know it’s myself that I’ll kill
But for those that come after they shall not have to tread
upon the eggshells laid down by the true living dead
in order to capture the essence to be
and the voice that belongs to the will to be free
so while you drive a wedge that will tear us apart
I encourage my neighbour to speak from the heart
And so set the seal of this moral impasse
whilst one chose the live inside a kingdom of glass
the other continued to flourish and grow
whilst others around him simply chose not to know
But great is the present as the past slips away
and the future unfolds with each passing day
to reveal to the few that dare to unravel
that times is not space and space is not travel
But the spoke in the wheel and the wheel is the word
and the wheel keeps on whirling that’s why they call it the world
and the word was once heaven until they dropped in an L
to make sure that the language remains under a spell

By Theodore Dalrymple, Our Culture, What’s Left Of It...
In Marx “we enter a world of infinite bile - of rancor, hatred contempt - rather than of sorrow or compassion.”
“As you read the Manifesto, a ghostly procession of catastrophes seems to rise up from it, as from the witches’ brew in Macbeth.”
“The Manifesto makes no mention of individual life. For him there are no individuals, or true humans, at all.”
“It is no wonder, then, that Marx speaks only in categories: bourgeois, the proletarian. Why study a man, when you know Men?”
“He was notoriously scathing about all would be practical reformers. Only he knew the secret of turning the nightmare into a dream. There is no need for other parties, let alone individuals with their own personal quirks.”
“Where Turgenev (in Mumu) hopes to lead us to behave humanely, Marx aims to incite us to violence.”
“The Communists openly declare that their ends can be attained only by forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions.”
