What definitely contributed to WotC's biggest losses lately is coming more from Magic the Gathering. The last major expansion set that was released a couple months ago was released with over half of all the cards printed miscut, which basically made that entire Magic expansion worthless. D&D not selling has also contributed but probably not as much.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před rokem +15

That's plausible. But remember that MtG is also multiple times bigger selling than D&D; so even if D&D's losses are as little as $9-10 million, that would still be really bad for D&D...

They will shut that division down and try to figure out how to get something out of it maybe by selling it off. @qtsssim very short version? Wizards decided to bring back Dragonlance spell jammers, Dark Sun.
People started getting all up in arms saying that Dragon Lance was problematic, due to its use in narrative of love spells or potions. They agitated to have it canceled. Wizards tried to break contract by just refusing to accept any manuscript given and hoping the writers would give up. The writer took them to court, the court told wizards they couldn't do that, and the book has been published. The synopsis on the back indicates it's about a young girl who tries to go back in time to stop the war of the Lance to keep her father from dying.
In the meantime, they have released what they had for spell Jammer which was incomplete, unfinished, and had people up in arms because a race of monkey people was apparently racist somehow. And I think Dark Sun they have buried under the rug

I purchased the 5e PHB the day it came out, but realized it wasn't for me. So that's the last time I directly gave WotC my money. Before that it was some 3.5 splat book around 2007. I have brought some 2ndhand WotC StarWars Saga edition books, never played it, don't think I would intentionally play it RAW given the choice. However I like reading RPG books even if I don't intend to ever play them. It's interesting to see how different mechanics work & how they address the main theme.

First of all, it's a very Bleak and harsh setting. It's possible, if they stick to how it was designed, to die of heat exposure or dehydration. Most people are selfish and it's a setting of violence which is abhorrent to these people.
Then you also have the half giants, which gets into something they have been calling problematic, the idea of a half breed. Add to the fact that they are essentially mentally disabled, and you're going to get some ableism cries.
The dwarves are sterile and are basically mules. That's going to upset people both from a racial standpoint and from a gender standpoint.
Slavery is a large component of the setting. I think that's self-explanatory.
Dark Sun has a special snowflake race, the ThriKreen. It's not possible to make something horny out of such a character,

this might also be the real reason for the open license changes. theyre realizing that people wont buy their woke garbage and will simply evade to community products and books written by fans of DnD who are actually talented and invested into the game, and its settings. so theyre either trying to curb that or theyre trying to at least make some money off what other people develop as the wording in the changed license allows them to come in any time on you and demand any portion of the sales that they see fit.
i think whats going to happen in reality is, that people will simpy make their own game systems instead, or stay in older DnD systems like 3e or 5e.
they dont realize that there is no cornerning and monopolizing the tabletop market. because making your own content for a tabletop game, or even making your own system is easier than writing a mod for a PC game, since it doesnt even require any coding skills on top of writing, or game design skills.
its insanely easy for anyone to basically come up with his homebrew content for an old DnD edition, or even make their own system.

I liked the concept of f e a t s, I felt that they were a nice addition. 3rd Edition was also where I felt they hit their stride in terms of overall presentation of product. They released a ton of books that were largely lower and little bits in details, each setting kind of had their own theme in terms of publication. For example Forgotten Realms books were printed to look like they were on parchment, Ebron had that punk aesthetic. For the price of the books you got a lot of material.
As far as critical role declining numbers, it's not so much wokeness specifically in my opinion as it is two things. One, the Purity Pony fighting will continue to narrow the focus, until inevitably everybody gets the accusing finger pointed at them. This has happened to critical role several times in the last year. The other thing is they are catering to an audience with the retention span of a mayfly. They're all in on it in the beginning, they're all obsessed with their fanfiction and their shipping, but inevitably something will attract their consumer mentality and they will drift away.

The game should be enjoyed by everyone but I don't think an enjoyable game focuses on it. And I would say I don't think it's only the wokeness that is responsible for their declining numbers, only part of the reason. I think they are focused on it being a show rather than just enjoying a game much like the first season. With money and popularity came the demand to entertain and put on a show. I feel like they lost some of their spontaneity and improvisation because of this and people can see it. Add on top of that a political and social wokeness that is voiced and presumed that their viewership totally is on board and you've got a declining viewership. This of course is just my opinion of what it could be and I could be wrong. Wokeness is creeping into everything and CR and new D&D materials are just other areas that they are. What do you mean Spelljammmer hasn't come out yet?
it has - a few months back and it was dissapointing to say the least.
They add some "races" (that barely feel special outside their nice art and concepts - some of which taken form 2E Dark Sun and Spelljammer),
some spells, some monsters and some new mechanics (gravity and spaceship combat) and a new hub (2E Spelljammer's Rock of Bral)
and a new adventure that feels half-baked and with a plot that a three -year-old would feel embarrassing his mental level
but all of these are so kimmed, bare and void of actual, interesting, cool changes and mechanics that they feel like free content some company would through at you from time to time.
The Rock of Bral explanation is only a page-and a-half of content (I can also publish a DarkSun book where I only put a nice picture and say this world is called aThas, it is really hot and dangerous and people are thirsty... and that's it) - They add a map though... hard to understand why as they provide no information about the place.
The Races have so few meaningful traits and are outright confusing - The blob creatures, for example, have the very special trait of pseudopods that can do... nothing - so why have them? they add nothing to the gameplay!!!
The shipcomabt basically tells you (It really tells you that - explicitly) that hand to hand combat is better and you should not really do ship combat. If you really want such a thing they took the 2e rules of spelljammer and removed everything from them so that they feel like ranged combat without cover (there are no explosions, ship maneuvers, gravity, interesting features of every ship - nothing).
They removed space exploration so space is just a place for random encounters from city to city.
They say nothing about the politics of space which were so important for the meta-plot of 2e Spelljammer.
They created a very confusing cosmology in which space is part of the Astral plane so basically space travel is just "believing in yourself to go to the second star on the right" like Peter Pan.
I think this is the problem of WOTC - not the wokenss or lefist tendancy, one can easily delete political elements from his campaign or change them - the games are just unplayable. I did Wild beyond the Witchlight with my kids and it had a lot of color, and whimsical characters and setting but I really tried hard to find actual GAMEPLAY.
The game just tells you - here is a talking frogman, here is a fat witch, here are lost children in the woods , your characters could never kill monsters as they are too strong, the NPCs need nothing from you and you need to do nothing... have fun. THey want to change DND (an rpg that started as an evolution of classic miniature wargames) into a game where there is no combat, no dungeons and NO GAME AT ALL - a walking simulator. It is as if they think DND should be more like Fantasy cons where everyone does cosplay and take a picture of themselves next to a dragon manaquin.
    I am really frustrated.

It's fantasy, it's ok to say orcs are evil, geez. I played MTG when I was in high school about 20 years ago, and stopped playing because of the corporate practice of WotC at that time, when 8th Edition came out, but that's a different story.
Recently I was wondering where MTG is now, so I searched and looked cards etc, didn't seem bad at first, although a bit bliated with extra rules for my taste.
Then I looked the most recent conference where they announced the new Dominaria expansion, and how wherever I clicked on the video, they were talking about diversity of the setting, diversity this and that.
And I was like, "wait, what happened to MTG that diversity became a selling point?" 20 yearrs ago, I found MTG the most diverse, crazy fantasy setting I have ever seen. It wasn't a thing, that was it's default high concept, every deck was like a plethora of creature types, extreme magical ideas, while keeping rules quite simple (there wasn't nearly as many keywords as now).

I don’t think that’s correct about the ravenloft book. I bought it , they changed some dark lords but it’s more of they got overthrown and their place taken by the new ones in a few of the realms. Which is completely in line with the lore of the 90s set. Th big retcon they did do was move the domains of dread as a pocket dimension within the shadowfell . The only thing I think lines up with what you’re talking about is a single page that describes the different horror themes; body, folk, cosmic , etc and discuss with your player which these you’ll be running to see if any are “triggering “ which yeah is silly but the rest of the book is actually a solid toolbox for running your own horror games. Much better the spelljammer. Though I will pull out my older ravenloft books and Do another comparison but yeah it’s not “scooby doo”.

@@KingZNIN boy howdy I seen to see you in a lot of these threads making smarmy little comments that are exceedingly off base.
You are wrong. Ravenloft has always been relatively consistent. Mysterious dark Powers kidnap the worst of the worst all over the multiverse, and trap them in ironic hells. None of the dark Lords are redeemable because none of them are willing to make the changes that need to be made. LORD soth was the only exception, and that was simply because Weiss and Hickman pushed it because they didn't want their character in ravenlock.
Even when Raven lost supplements were put out by sword and sorcery, it was the same Core group of people maintaining the lore, they called themselves the Kargat and for a time maintained a website.
5th edition has made drastic changes and it is more like scooby-doo. The dark Lords are all given sympathetic edges. They're given excuses for their bad behavior. Players are given excuses for their behavior, ways that they can be changed, and in some cases they are portrayed in a sympathetic light.
The concept for ravenloft has always been two things. One, it was based off of classic movie monsters and classic horror movies. And two, it was supposed to be an epic end level challenge for players that had seen and done everything. The Raven Loft setting gives evil more strength and take strength away from the good side of things. Everything in the setting is considered a challenge to the players. The vistani are shadowy mysterious figures that are just as likely to curse the players as to give them the information they need to continue on their quests, and other people they encounter are either people created by the realm as a part of the torment of the dark lord or they are other people that have been trapped as well. Also, generally speaking dark Lords are not necessarily aware of the existence of other realms. Though there are exceptions.
Now with fifth edition the dark lord is a sympathetic figure who might be turned away from evil, has some Noble motivations, the vestani are your friendly neighborhood mailman, and everybody in the ravenloft knows that they are in domains that can now be crossed as long as you have a special magic item

MTG is currently going through a pretty harsh market fatigue. With how much new product they are printing they have card reveals practically every month now and people who have been fed up have hit their breaking point. Also, despite magic and fantastical races inherent to the system DND has been struck with the worst curse a RPG system can have, mundanity. Worse is they inflicted it upon themselves. They took the idea of Strixhaven, the magical college started by 5 elder dragons facing an insurrection from evil former students, and they made it boring. I've bought several 5e books, one (PHB) to support my FLGS and then the rest with trade credit at the local huge used book store (which prices used 5e books at new 5e prices and sometimes more than new prices, which is a big WTF?) because I'd rather not give money directly to Hasblow. I don't run 5e though I will play it when one of my players wants to take the big chair for a bit. The books I've acquired have been from when newer DMs I know were asking me "I must be missing something because I don't get it. How can I make this work?" and me picking up the book to try to read it and help them out. Sadly, my answer is usually that the book was poorly written and looked like it had been done piecemeal by different writers who worked separately and didn't communicate with each other (effectively splitting the party and wondering why everything goes to crap) and not edited before going to print. That's a disappointment to me, but unfortunately not a surprise.
The biggest problem I've seen with D&D this century is that the game is rulebook and rule focused while the game I started playing in '79 was more creativity and adventure focused. The Holmes Boxed Set and AD&D I started with was not big on rules for every situation, encouraging the DM to have the freedom and creativity to open up their own sandbox of rules based on their own group(s) and experiences. I remember one of the things we learned from Gary Gygax (who we got to talk to on the phone for half an hour or so as part of a school project in middle school) was that he didn't put in a lot of rules because it was impossible to make a rule for every single thing that might come up in a game. Instead they made a framework of what he called suggestions, which he actively encouraged us to ignore at times if it made our games better, and left the rest up to us. The more rules one puts in a game, the more one limits what the players can do and how it can get done. Creativity and consistency in judgments at the table was what Gygax wanted from and for DMs. I think later editions lost some (or perhaps a lot) of that. And the awful writing practices embraced by the company haven't helped.

Spelljammer is the worst offender, a book with nothing on Spelljammer Setting lorewise with 70% of new Monsters recycled One or versions of Player races and a disappointing Adventure.
The point of no return for 5ed was Tasha Cauldron. Before the sourcebooks were a bit Lazy but Fair. Not Great products but okish. Then the Wokies on Twitter demanded and Wotc delivered.

Then they forgot about them and now no one plays them and they linger into the oblivion cause Wokies dont play their game( Big Surprise)and normies dont care.
-Slavery Is wrong! Brothel are wrong and sexist(in a medieval Setting).
Words redacted from the sourcebooks by the ministry of New-Language. Rewritten Lore on Volos guide.
-Curse of Strahd was Racist against Vistani. Wotc: not our fault Ad&d writers and Dragonlance creators(the same creators of Ravenloft) were Racist ( they are not). Strahd revised Edition
-Lawsuit against Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss (ended in a soap bubble)
-This Is not enough! Ravenloft Is Racist!
    Van Richten Guide to Genderswap.
Genderswapped Darklords for no reason, Npc made gay for no reason, blatant Blackwashing( It s fine if It s not Whitewashing) of the Foxglove Twins(White gals from the equivalent of Germany) into creole porto-ricans.
    Still not enough.
-Strixhaven Curriculum of Chaos with Gay balls and kisses. A Lgbtq friendly book.
One of the Worst selling sourcebook.
Another hint that Wokies dont play the game.
And of course was not enough.
-Coming Next Radiant Citadel. A book that takes pride in being Racist( no White writers allowed). Perfect. No complains. Sales are on rock bottom.
-And then Spelljammer. No One cared about It( not the fans that consider the 5ed edition Garbage nor the casual cause It s too pricey) till space monkey controversy.
Wotc bowed and apologiezed"past writers are Racist It s their fault", too bad Jeff Grubb Spelljammer Papa was never involved with 5ed revision.
-And then after that D&d One. And the Sign language bullshit.
And now we have Wotc financial datas.
35% losses on Digital market. 16% on hardcover sourcebooks. Not counting Magic the Gathering 30 Anniversary fiasco.
