    Very nice video. I trap in Northern BC Canada and also have a trapping channel. We have mink and muskrat but I target more beaver and otter. Fun watching other trappers methods.

    Is there anything in the world better than a prime muskrat? Honestly, I'd rather catch them over anything else. Great numbers, extremely sustainable, literally no one cares -- I've told my vegan friends that I like trapping muskrats, let them hold a hat, and they were like "oh yeah. we get that." -- and the fur is amazing. Super warm, super soft, and so pretty. I caught a really dark otter with a gorgeous throat patch last year. And honestly, now that I got one, IDK that I'll even bother with much other than muskrats.

    Another awesome video keep em coming I always learn something! What did you make your baseplate out of ? Flat steel with coni bracket?

    • @HeirstotheOutdoors
      @HeirstotheOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, flat 3/16 steel plate with coni bracket tack welded to it! Happy to hear you take some stuff from our videos. We should have a beaver video coming next week. Covers 330s and snares!

      I think they already answered this in other comments. One said a bare plate that has the other parts tack welded and I see another reply that cited F&T Post, so maybe they have some on the site so you don’t have to make ur own. Hope this helps and good luck this season

    How do you trap muskrats in deep water and there is not very much muskrats

    • @HeirstotheOutdoors
      @HeirstotheOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      The short answer is you don’t. Make sure there are muskrats there and find where they are going in the shallow using the methods shown in this video. Good luck!

    Did you know that the Common Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is the largest extant rodent of the hamster family?

    • @HeirstotheOutdoors
      @HeirstotheOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      I did not! I figured they were like beavers, but I’m not one of the Heirs trappers. Very neat! 🤣 -Brian

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 Před 2 lety +2

      Muskrats and beavers are not related because they are not similar in molecularity, muskrats are part of the hamster family along with the hamsters, lemmings, and voles, while beavers are their own family, interestingly, all semi-aquatic rodents evolved this niche independently, the mouse-like rodents (suborder Myomorpha) have many semi-aquatic members such as members of the hamster family like muskrats and water voles, in addition to many true mice and rats (families Muridae and Sigmodontidae) also having evolved semi-aquatic niches, even a few cavy-like rodents (suborder Caviomorpha) like the nutria (Myocastor coypus) and capybaras (genus Hydrochoerus) have evolved to be semi-aquatic, squirrel-like rodents (suborder Sciuromorpha) have only one group that evolved the semi-aquatic niche, the beavers, thus muskrats and beavers are only similar due to convergent evolution.
