Toenail Injury Time-Lapse Regrowth

  • On May 15th 2015, I tore my toenail completely off when I misjudged jumping from one rock to another at the beach. I wasn't sure it would ever grow back as the scab kept getting smaller and smaller but there was no indication that anything was replacing it. Eventually a nail started to reform.
    Being a surfer I was of course going to surf on it every day. The booties didn't hurt too bad and I'd put on a layer of Neosporin, some gauze, and then a Band-aid, and then go surf. After surfing I'd take of the Band-aid and let it breath and dry out. Then I would reapply the Neosporin, the gauze and the Band-aid. Then repeat the next day. After two weeks, I stopped using the Neopsorin.
    NOTE: Do not use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Those two things just damage the tissue. Use soap and water and wash gently.
    I tried to take a photo every day but as it got better it was easy to forget. This shows a 79 day recovery process which is faster than I thought it would take. It's not finished yet, but I would call the regrowth a success.

      I'm wondering how long it will take for a funky fungusy toenail to grow out disease free. It's not real bad, but I'm just starting to get serious about working on it.

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 6 lety +21

      Fungus is tough, because if the fungus isn't eradicated completely it just keep living in the toenail. That's why some people eventually have fungus infected toenails surgically removed, so they can start fresh.

    This was really reassuring, thank you. I had an accident while walking up some stairs about two months ago. My big toe nail went in the direction it is not supposed to, up. The surgeon at the ER cut off about half the nail and let the rest of it sit. Whenever I asked any healthcare professionals if my nail would grow back, they would say they didn’t know. Now I’m a little more reassured.
    I just pulled the last bit of it, which had been very loose for weeks, from the nail bed (it’s way dead and didn’t hurt at all). From looking at how your nail grew back, I think about 5 millimeters have already grown back, so that makes me happy.

      @@ke1echn3r hey there! I had replied but I guess CZcams took it down because I sent you a link to a type of bandage that worked really well. What I had written was that even though it’s been a few years, off the top of my head, it took about 60 days to start looking like it was going to become a fully normal nail again. Similar to this video, actually. You can see that in this video, it is pretty much fully better by day 80 ish. Now, you wouldn’t even know there ever was a nail injury to begin with! In our situation, the nail was almost completely ripped off and just hanging by the cuticle area. I don’t remember if a doctor suggested we could have it removed, but either way we ended up leaving the nail on. Neosporin would be applied on the skin underneath the nail regularly to keep it disinfected, and I would highly recommend any “self adhering bandage” or wrap. It allows you to gently wrap the toe to keep it clean and protect it, and it remains securely without getting undone. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I cleaned the toe with alcohol and peroxide to remove the dried blood that got out and used band aids for 3 days. Some of the blood was pretty dried and wouldn't come off because I didn't wanted to scrub hard because it hurt. Then one day I woke up to find my dog making a thorough cleaning with his tongue ¬¬ It was sparkling clean, so I had to use some more disinfectant again XD Now I can completely bend my toe and the flesh line is completely visible under the nail when light hits it; so I guess it'll take a couple of months for the new nail to grow and re-attach that flesh.

    My toenail suffers fungus (the toenail looks yellowish) and the right bottom edge of the nail is deeply ingrown. The toenail doesn't look so serious and crazy, but it's basically dead. I went to local doctor who gave my the antibiotics and some yellow liquid. It helped to heal the pain and prevent the formation of pus aside, but it didn't solve my main problem. I plan to visit the specialist and I'm thinking of nail removal, but I 'm afraid it will look weird and ugly after regrowth. 😐

      My big toe nail came off when I was 10...
      So earlier that week I had cut it down really _really_ short by accident (that's a non-starter) and then I was just coming out of the shower and when I opened the door it slid right on my toenail, pushing it down and making a massive slit and _cracking open_ my toenail from the pressure. If that wasn't bad enough, it cut down the nail even more to a point were the pain was unbearable (especially for a 10 year old). AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF, that just happened to be the toenail which was ingrown. So the pain was 10x more dreadful. And it bled so much. So freaking much.

      Depends on the situation. I was in the ocean surfing every day right after the injury. I need more than a couple days because the wound would sort of reopen over and over again. It may be best to complete the removal. The nail won't reattach. It's now vulnerable to getting torn off accidentally and more susceptible to getting it infected. If it doesn't come of easily with a little tug then maybe a foot doctor can remove. A large toenail can take up to a year to grow back. So that's a long journey with a dead toenail still attached.

    I busted my toenail several months ago. It was really bad, but not totally dead, and it was still attached at the quick. However, it seems that a new nail is forming underneath it while the old one is still trying to revive itself. As a result, the old nail remains attached at the base but grows outward and detached from the the bed from there, due to the fact that the new nail is always underneath it. I almost wanna rip out the old nail, but it’s still alive at the base, so that’d hurt a lot. I keep hoping the old nail will give up and die, making space for the new one, but in the meantime, it’s just ugly asf.

      Thanks for that story. It's a great visual. The old nail will ultimately be pushed out by the new one. I don't really think it's "alive". Just attached

    I feel so uncomfortable with injuries on nails, it makes me wince at the photos and stuff.
    Unfortunately, I got injured exploring a stream of a river with a crazy uncle of mine, he even pushed down his thumb on my torn toenail as if it was going to glue back, some folks are not right in the head.
    The accident tho was totally my fault as I followed him, and I am very clumsy, we were surrounded by tree branches and roots, eventually I hit some root and I felt like there were a splinter under my toenail, when I saw the damage I was very angry at myself for ignoring my senses for not turning back earlier.
    Now I'm stuck with half of a toenail of my big toe for about 3 weeks.

    At when end when you said it will probably grow back took me out LOL,. My little toenail fell off to my knowledge there was no drama I just woke up one morning and it was hanging off a little and I’m hoping it grows back just fine

      I wanted to be completely honest. If you destroy the matrix, it may never grow back. Fortunately the matrix will probably be still intact after losing a nail.

      @tnnt05 for a while I thought I would just have skin as well. Which I was prepared to accept because I didn't think it'd be that bad not to have a toenail there.

    Clay. Could you describe the pain when you first had it?

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 2 lety

      I honestly don't remember completely. I do remember that I knew something happened to my toe and it did hurt. I think along the lines of hitting your shin on a coffee table. Then I looked down and realized my toenail was completely gone. So I took a photo.
      Then I put some gauze wrap on it and a big bandaid and went surfing the next day. As long as I didn't hit the open wound, I really didn't feel much pain.

    I watched this because mine it hanging by one piece of skin by the tip. It's bloody and somewhere between your two injured toes. I'm pretty sure it's going to fall off. It hurts with any movement.
    I hope mine grows back. Hearing about the shoe thing is problematic. I'm in Maine, and it's snowing.

    my nails falling off has been a big fear of mine and lucky me... my toenail from my big toe collided with the door and basically lifted some of it off the nail bed. When I tell y'all I started freaking out cuz of the blood underneath my nail... I was also home alone and this had never happened to me so I was terrified. It's been 3 days since this happened and the toe nail only bleeds a bit at night from the sides bc im a terrible sleeper and its also purple but now I'm just waiting for it to come off.

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 3 lety

      Yep, waiting for it to fall off naturally is probably the best choice. Unfortunately I've never seen a nail reattach itself. So it will eventually come off but if it stays there long enough there might be a new nail growing underneath it.

    I stubbed my toe and the top half of my toe came off. By the way do you trim any top layers cuz my doctor said it'll grow upwards and form layers

  • @tomandalbert

    Been there. Having always caught my long board by the skeg I had a sore with sand in it that ever healed. The Public Service Hospital in San Francisco 5 years after clean out the boil and wondered where the sand came from. Well....1974 to 1979 I lived in a VW Bus with my dog Punch after getting out of the military.

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah. Ocean water sure slows the healing process. The simplest cut takes at least twice as long to heal if you surf every day.

  • @sonalidutt7704

    You changed dressing atleast twice a day??.... Bro you should have waited for atleast 2 days to change dressing

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 3 lety +1

      Not in my case. I surf every day. The dressing had to be changed. And if someone is exceciosing or showering every day, they need to do every day minimum. I think you are assuming someone is just sitting on the couch with their leg propped up.
      My partner just has her ingrown toenails shaved off at the doctor's and they also recommended twice a day dressing changes.

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 6 lety

      As long as the germinal matrix still there (most likely) it will grow back. That's kind of like the root or the seed of the nail. be patient. Big toenails can take 6 months or more to grow back.
