Sony A90K 42” OLED: is it Worth Buying?

- Reviewing the Sony A90K OLED TV (42”). I’ve been using it over the last 5 weeks for gaming, movies and productivity, but how does it perform and is it worth buying for 2023? It’s got some great features including HDMI 2.1, 120hz, VRR and an impressive XR Upscaler. But it’s also lacking a few features that could make the LG C2 the better buy.

Would you use a 42" in your setup? Also, I added some background music in today's video, let me know what you think (feedback welcome).
I'm a fan of the music. Great levels :)
I got the 48 inch a90k for a great deal on an open box, and I love it. It’s nice for RPG games and 4k blu rays.
Complements really well it was very suttle initially. Would definitely include in more intros or maybe with some B-roll. 👍👌🔥
Nice vid!
Quick question, LG C2 42" 0r C3 42", Is the C3 worth the extra £500 over the C2?
I've not got my hands on the C3 yet (will do within the next few weeks), but £500 is a lot for what I've seen on paper.
Just literally bought this TV for the PS5 and work. And course, I'm here on CZcams to validate my purchase and based from your review, it looks like it was worth it lol. Can't wait to get it. Stellar review mate, earned a sub.
It’s an awesome TV. Zero regrets so enjoy 💪
I saw it today.....the issue is the price.
@@craigharris41 Depends on where you're buying it from, i recommend Costco in-store its really cheap compared to online.
not worth it at all lol.
@@AppIeOfficial why ain't it?
Love the subtle music man, nice touch and what a great review. This has made me want one now 😫
Nice 42 OLED! I’m looking at adding an upgrade sometime to my office and this one forsure has a nice look to it!
Great review. I've had this TV for about 3 months now and I do really like it. Two things to be weary of though. First, With 120 hz and VRR enabled, some PS5 titles will cause the TV to flicker when opening the apps and even at random times while playing. It's not a common occurrence, but does happen sometimes. So unless I'm playing a really gorgeous and graphically intensive game like Spiderman, Horizon, etc, I just have it set to 60 hz with VRR off and haven't noticed any differences personally in the games being any less smooth. Completely eliminates the weird flickering.
And second, if you plan on playing blu rays on the PS5 with this TV, it's kind of a hassle. With the PS5 on, it locks the screen into game mode, so you can't switch the picture setting to cinema or anything while watching a movie. Most of the time I'll just use the TV apps like Netflix, HBO, etc to watch a movie and I can switch then, but with my PS5 being my only blu ray player, if I want to watch something that I only have a physical disc version of, I'm locked into the game mode.
A couple small issues in the grand scheme of things, but stuff to be aware of.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Idk if this is worth it for you to do every time but if you change the HDMI mode from Enhanced VRR to just Enhanced 4k you can switch from game mode
NICE 42" OLED! I've been looking for the best TV for gaming for a while and this has really helped out. Awesome video as usual!
Thank you. It’s a great screen.
@@SpawnPoiint but your talking that the screen is not bright enough so thats not so great

Very nice set!!! The video is the best 🎉🎉
I have a samsung 48" 4k tv (2019 model) and it doesn't exist anymore, the vast variety of tv's we have today and how fast and big the market is just insane, you can find any type of tv for any type of budget without a sweat, crazy times.
Not in Brazil, here we have very few options and they are very very expensive (taking into account the minimum salary and stuff)
I just bought this tv today. Love it
Nice 42 OLED! I’ve had my eye on the 48” version. Keep up the great content!
Nice 42" OLED
been looking for a new tv, so this video helps a lot
I got the 55 inch C2 last year, completely changed my experience of gaming and movie watching, I recommend to everyone that they need to save up for an OLED
Just got the 48in version of this for 550 at a Best Buy outlet store. I’m so thankful I found one for that price
I’m going to I’m finally going to be buying my PS5 and monitor next week after months of saving! Ordered my secret labs Magnus desk which is arriving next week and I cannot wait! For the last 8 years or so I’ve used a 22” regular 1080p tv with my PS4 so to jump to a 42” will be too big I feel otherwise I would possibly get one.
Don’t forgot about money for games

I went with the 42 C2 and I couldn’t be happier. Insane tv
I'm kinda having remorse and wished I might have checked that C2 more. But the skeptic on me is wondering why you are watching videos on your 2nd choice....
Great review, SpawnPoiint. I recently bought a Sony A80K 55 inches TV for my new house entertainment device. (Can't wait, first house!) I would say all the features provided from the TV itself is more or less about every person's preferences. They may have some little or tiny cons in every model, but to me after been surveying so many type of TVs, A80K is my final decision. It has an overall brightness and with dolby vision / HDR features, i guess I'm more than enough satisfied for the product. I also gonna think about to use this TV as my WFH monitor though it may sounds crazy for 55 inches but I guess the productivity itself should be able to get the job done nicely. Again, i can't wait to get my hands on it! Subs from me! Keep it up! =D
Enjoy the new house! Thanks for the sub too!
Great review. Got this TV refurbished for half the price. For some reason when i plug in my sony x800 bluray player it converts from HDR to SDR for everything. It is connected to my yamaha receiver via the e arc. The receiver is not 4k compatible but with my previous lg oled i was able to bypass this by running an additional hdmi cord into the sony x800 player and then the tv ( which i have also done for the sony A90K ). What can i do?
Where is your desk mat from? And how much is it?
Great video as always dude!
Looks great 👍
What exactly means that this TV doesn't support 1440p, as SpawnPoiint said in 5:53?
I mean, if you set 4K in Windows settings and after that you set 1440p inside the settings of a PC game, the TV should display the game with black bars around or stretching it, right?
This was one of my choices last year but I went with the 42 C2 due to the cheaper price, 1440p support and more HDMI 2.1 ports. The processing of the Sony looks really impressive but not enough to make up for the previously mentioned 3 setbacks.
Also, Sony only gives you TWO HDMI 2.1 ports, and one of those ports is the e-ARC. Incredibly frustrating for a so-called premium brand like Sony. Meanwhile, the C2 has four 2.1 ports and flawless VRR support out of the box.
Same here. I got with the 42c2 last year as Monitor. And ive got 2 Sony oleds for bed and living Room. Overall i would say the processing and the sound quality is in Sonys Hand.
same went for the C2 last year
@@nik_cgn that’s my only regret getting the C2, since every Sony I’ve owned has had superior image quality and the acoustic panel tech is quite good for faux surround.
i have this tv and it definitely works with a 1440p resolution enabled via the nvidia resolution settings.
Keep going🔥
I'll try, thank you.
It's worth saying, that if you are NOT going to use external speakers (I don't because I use it primarily for productvity), the built-in speakers are surprisingly good for the times that I DO watch movies. It's a significant selling point for me. It sounds better than my 77 LG G2 for sure.
@@MaxPell-wu9zu Maybe I just have low expectations for built-in speakers, but Sony's are better than most.
Are you really comparing the sound of a 42-inch where you're sitting close to the monitor with a 77-inch where you're sitting far away?
@@MrChocobit I sometimes watch the 42" from bed, which is even further. I stand by my statement. The Sony speakers (which actually use the screen itself as the transducer) are DRAMATICALLY better than the shitty speakers in the LG.
How are the native apps on tv better than on a pc? I’d like to understand. Never seen a tv come close to how fast my pc is, good luck searching for something as fast as you do with a keyboard/mouse than with a remote.
Are there any smaller OLEDs that would fit on my desk on a multi monitor setup
@SpawnPoiint have you experienced any slowing down of your LG monitor's UI over time? How about this Sony you're reviewing here? I've heard this from a retailer, a common problem buyers of smart TVs supposedly experience
plus did you set up sound in settings in the right way? beacouse many people dont do it or doing it wrong ...
Great review but I have not problem setting the resolution to 1440p.
Have you ever had any over/underscan issues with these TV when connecting it to your Nvidia graphics card?
I also have a XR42A90K, but I'm connecting it to a 2080 Ti, and there's a major over/underscan issue going on.
If I physically disconnect the TV from power and restart it, the problem is solved somewhat, but temporarily, but it eventually goes right back to the signal not properly filling the monitor.
The picture signal is drawn outside the actual bounds of the display.
The only way I can permanently fix the issue is going into Nvidia Control Panel and decreasing the resolution of the signal to a slightly lower resolution, which isn't a great solution.
Btw, the option under settings to correct for this, that's currently set to "wide", is greyed out (disabled).
yeah I would lean towards the LG too. This Sony TV doesn't show FPS in a menu which I think is helpful nowadays for console gamers
How does this tv compare to the Sony X85K model or other non oled Sony tv's?
Would you be concerned about burn-in as a monitor? The app bar at the bottom, toolbar at the top and static backgrounds on for long periods of time seem a bit like tempting fate... any thoughts?
how is the input lag playing older games and older consoles like the ps3 the ps4 and scaler units 480p 4:3 like retrotink 5x. has firmware improved input lag? is the front of the screen made of scratch resistant glass?
Which has the better Picture Quality for watching movies/streaming, A90K or C2? i would ask about the C3 but its pretty much the same as the C2 with minor upgrades from the Reviews iv already seen.
Trust me: the C3 processor stomps the C2 for HDR for both movies and gaming. This whole 'its minor' is a little bit.... Wrong in my opinion. I sell TV's, I've literally put the same content on a 42C2 and a 42C3 and the C3 has genuinely got an edge for low black level HDR, Highlights, Colour volume. I love the C2, but the C3 is only getting a bad rep because the C2 is still on the market. The C2 got the same rep when the C1 was still available and went on to win multiple awards.... Seriously, go look, don't trust reviews
Hey can you tell me which tv is best for gaming and monitor in 2023?
Hello @SpawnPoiint I bought the 42" A90K a yeah ago. I can't complain about the video quality or sound for my purposes, but I've experienced so many user experience frustrations with the unintuitive navigation with so many options I don't need.
I'm not a gamer. I don't watch TV. I stream Netflix, sometimes CZcams, Amazon, Disney, etc. I just have time for basic consumption.
Even small details that I find incredibly annoying: when I perform a simple CZcams search at night when my boyfriend is sleeping and over the speakers I get an unnecessary Alexa type voice announcing "Okay, here's what I've found!" It makes me want to sell it and buy something else. Am I missing something? Any recommendations?
I am planning to get one of this - would you be able to guide me how do you connect MacBook Pro with usb C to the TV. What cable do you use to ensure the refresh rate remains high
Which MBP are you using? If it's the M1 Max or older, you can't get 120hz out of the HDMI. I'm locked to 60hz this way. I've used USB-C to DP but that won't work on this either.
This may work with other newer TVs too, but the my Sony Bravia X90K tv remote works with my PS5. Able to navigate apps and media with ease.
Finally, been waiting for your review on this tv. Always watch your review before buying. Thanks for making the choice easier 👍
That's awesome, thank you. I normally review within a week, but wanted to spend more time with it first.

if you using pc you can make pic much brighter and colors more realistic using nv settings and so on but not many know it also service menu on my c2 can do a bit to it
What size is the standing desk??
Great review and comparison. The price is the biggest factor for this TV for sure. My main TV is an LG C2 OLED and I really dislike webOS, so was heavily leaning toward the a90k over the LG offerings but couldn’t justify the price.
Today, I managed to pick this up brand new for AU$1596 including tax. The LG C2 is no longer available, and the C3 would have cost AU$2156.
I am SO DAMN HYPED! Can’t wait to set it all up. Upgrading from a placeholder 1440p IPS monitor, so I know it’s going to blow me away.
Did the A90K blow you away then?
@@jukebox2568 in terms of picture quality, and speaker sound, yeah I’m really stoked. Google’s OS is alright, fairly snappy but does have some annoying moments.
My biggest grievance with the a90k is that it’s a Sony, so presumably it would be the perfect TV for a PlayStation 5 Console. A couple of weeks after buying the TV, my PlayStation would stop transmitting sound randomly, and the only fix is to unplug the HDMI cable which is a major annoyance. I’d go so far as to say it’s a deal breaker.
And yes, it’s something to do with the TV and the 120hz HDMI mode with a ps5 attached. I don’t have the issue on my living room LG C3 at 120hz, and my PC that is connected to the a90k never drops sound even with 120hz mode enabled.
Disappointed to say the least.
@@ngc_au thanks a lot for the reply. I have a PS5 too so am a bit dismayed hearing that you had issues after connecting them.
Just wondering as you have a LG C3, would you say the C3 has about as good picture quality as the A90K? Or is the A90K so much better it’s worth 50% extra (where I’m at)?
@@jukebox2568sorry for the late reply. I would say they are just about as good. LG has some annoying ads in their OS. I would pick the LG regardless of those drawbacks if I could turn back time.
The sound issues have improved recently but it’s still annoying.
@@ngc_au thanks for the response.
From what you’ve said, I think I’ll go with the LG C3 then - it’s less than half the price of the A90K where I’m at!
I recently bought this tv and connected to my pc. Randomly I lose sound and have to reset eARC sound every time. Does any one know a permanent fix. Thanks
Nice 42" OLED. I prefer Google TV over WebOS myself so I just plugged a Chromecast with Google TV into my LG C1 :)
Great choice on the Chromecast, I think I'll do the same on my main TV now.

Hi guys,
I have a question, which one would you choose in 42, sony a90k or lg c3? I want to pick up one for black friday and I am confuse to choice one. I know that both models are cool. I should use for videogames 80 percent of the time. I want to connect ps5, series x and x360 and ps3. So, for picture quality, which one would you prefer? Thanks for advance
How is the reescaling with old gen consoles? Which one is better fpr this purpouse?
How does this compare to the Asus pg42uq?
Ik that It has exclusive features for gaming but does it work with xbox ???
Most of the time the treble and midrange is fairly good for use in a study room but bass is far from sufficient. Back in 2014 I bought a flagship Sony XBR950 4K TV and it sported a 3.5" jack dedicated for connecting with a subwoofer. However, all TVs on the market today have been deprived of this convenience, forcing customers to get a sound bar. It is scandal.
YMMV. powered satellites will be fine for line-out. The reason soundbars are huge, is that subs need a lot of space. You can get 'tower' vertical subs, vertical speakers are space efficient compared to a bar/soundbar, but YMMV. People don't like tower speakers anymore.
The other issue is, Dolby Atmos with discrete speakers is not cheap hardware, compared to 5.1 or DTS. If you build a tower system, it needs like 4-5 speakers per tower for up/side/front firing, and there's an expensive amp required to power it and hook up all the cables around the room, sic. Soundbars don't need to do the full discrete speaker logic, so they can save money on the amps needed.
Fiber/SPDIF is usually better quality than the line-out, and works with Subs that have an amplifier anyway.
Arguably, inbuilt sound would be much, much easier to move the speakers into the stand. That would be the best option, but if they do this, they don't sell new TV's.
Part of the situation is, soundbars also force you to upgrade, i.e. Big Bars, Big TV, sic. I think LG made a G1 or G2 that had a soundbar built into their wall-mount unit, because they could make the unit thinner without speakers, and have a slimmer unit. The Samsung One Connect and Frame TV's also have an external power brick for handling cables etc.
The main reason why a TV can't deliver good sound, is that modern TV's are flat, there's nowhere for the sound to go except down, or into the back wall, because sound requires moving the air. You can't easily get around the distances needed to build a "bass" waveform. This is why the Sonos Arc/PlayBase has a bit of a chamber system to improve the bass response, it's also why soundbars get bulky/long. Surface area, matters. A cube box, is the more efficient system to move air, but you can cheat it a little by having the sound change direction or bounce around a little to increase energy over time.
If you can't move enough air, then you can't get volume or stereo separation, or get rid of the distortion of the frame / desk it's standing on. While it's possible to make TV sound better ... it's very difficult without putting large 'horn' shapes inside the back plastic of the TV, which would affect cooling and weight. The effect would probably work well, but you'd also get ugly frames / side channels for the air to pass through at the sides/top/bottom of the TV as well.
Were is your desk from?
Nice 42" OLED TV. Sony has always been the king of picture quality in my opinion. Only downside is it's very expensive.
Thank you! I agree with that, the picture quality is top tier, but the price makes it hard to justify over the others.
Try bad boys, the upscale of that is insane 😍😍

That’s a crazy good price for the S95B! I did a review on that a few months back. Great screen and incredibly bright. If you need it to be bright (loads of natural light or near windows) get the S95B. Otherwise the C2 wins on everything else.

It’s the Herman Miller Embody
I’ve had this TV for about 4 months now and it is definitely 10000% worth it. It was a little hard getting used to the dim OLED display. But, compared to my 42inch X85K the 48inch A90K blows it out the water! Even though it was a bit pricey it’s worth it!
would you say the 48 inch version of a90k is to big for gaming like shooters like battlefield or warzone ? im thinking about 42 but i have no tv at all atm so for movies of course 48 is better for watching movies.. but my preferences are 100% pure gaming experience first. Big Greetings from Frankfurt Germany :)
@@chaokakaotv3614 Greetings my friend! Honestly some may say it is big for a gaming tv but, it also depends on how close you are to the tv. @@Adri9570 Hey man! I was actually thinking where was it that I should have updated about the TV, I thought it was reddit lol
So far I've used the TV for gaming on PS5 and home office and things been really great!
I followed HDTVTest channel C2 guide for configuring the C3's picture, but not to the litter though.
Picture quality and colors are really superb and will ruin you, can't look at the other TV and monitors anymore, nothing beats it! Unlike previous models, this one can get really bright and you'll have no issues seeing in a bright room.
Sound is good imo, but not great. It has a lot of settings to test and that can be tiring. Tested only a little and settled on the standard settings because I didn't like the other options out of the box. I might give it another go in the future and do more testing.
Gaming mode is awesome, supports VRR, G-Sync, Free-Sync, ALLM and it is awesome for SDR (tested it with fighting games) and HDR gaming (tested it in COD MW2). I game for long hours and the TV doesn't get that hot. It is well ventilated.
It is light weight and I'm planning to desk-mount it.
Menus can be confusing at first, but it gets better over time. It has plenty of apps support.
When setting up for the first time, I panicked when I saw black lines on the screen and I started to believe I got a faulty one. After looking in the menus I found and used the built-in pixel cleaner feature under the support menu and that did the trick "phew"
If you have a C2, then wait if money is a factor in your decision. But if you have an older model or something else, f'ing go for it man!
I hope that covered it all, and plz ask me if I missed something.
Nicr 42" OLED. please answer.
Ps5 for gamimg causes the tv to be stuck in "game mode" because of VRR. Fine for gamimg but i prefer to watch through my ps5. Mainly to use my game headphones. How can i quickly turn this off when its stuck in game mode?
I have a follw up if you respond
Yeh that’s tough. You might need to change the HDMI settings on the tv. This gives you the option to enable VRR per port.
@@SpawnPoiint i actually thought of getting an HDMI splitter to switch ps5 to a NON-2.1 hdmi port when I want to watch.
2nd question. Have you experimented with screen quality between streaming apps off the TV versus the ps5? I think its better with ps5. I could just be imagining it.
Can you show your fps gaming monitor
Please try using a 55" 8k TV as a monitor.
Just on the verge of finally purchasing my 1st playstation5 after quite a long waiting period , wondering if you could possible give me advice , which is better ? the disc version or the version that you need to download games ? Any advise would be much appreciated , thank you .
