  • What's inside a Top Fuel Dragster Clutch? How does a clutch work?
    Today, we're going to Steve Read's Top Fuel School to learn all about it! You'll understand how the settings could make the difference between smoking the tires, or a 320mph pass.

    I have so much respect for the people that can figure out the height of the buttons, looking in between runs to see how much a finger touch or not, and all that stuff..
    Lol, I don’t even bother arguing with someone who says “they just going straight line comment” anymore - like whatever, there is SO much that goes on one these it’s amazing and I’ll always love it!

    My friends Modified Pulling Tractor has a "Crower-Glide" Style Clutch and he does not use a pedal at all, 100% centrifugal. - It works great!

    Thank you sir. I was working with a fuel funny car team and we were learning the new technology of clutches. We had a unit from Crower that had 2 discs. Air gap and weights were critical set up points..Using nuts and half nuts with washers changed everything. I appreciate your knowledge and respect your ability to demonstrate it so clearly.

    Wow, and people think Torque Converter science is a type of Voodoo or Black Magic, this Clutch Set-Up know how isn't any different ! Very Very Informative, greatly appreciate you showing us how this works. Been watching the Nitro Burners since a small child, now I'm middle aged and always knew during the run it's the Clutch that is gonna determine how the car launches and accelerates during the run, Thanks so much for explaining how everything works, i can't wait till Part 2.

    In a way it's kind of similar to a snowmobile primary clutch with weights and profiles. The drag car clutch is way more complicated and more tuneable. Cool stuff.

    Thank you Steve and 👋from your mother land🇬🇧
    My take on this is $$$ gets you 11'000bhp
    Knowledge and experiance (with a few $ thrown in) gets you down the track and the win light turned on.

    I'm interested in your statement about adding cutters on the floaters. I guess in my mind adding cutters would make it more aggressive, not slow it down for a looser track. Can you expound on that? In our TAD we have a 3 disc pedal clutch, we run a 3 or 6 cutter full width floater in the front and a 9 cutter half width floater in the back. I haven't learned exactly why yet but I'm interested in your thoughts about floaters.

    Is there a machine that can spin the clutch to see what it is doing without being in the car? Also, can the secret recipe be used on a spare clutch or does each clutch have it's own tune that has to be worked out?

    • @stevereadTF
      @stevereadTF  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes there is. A lot of the big teams have their own clutch Dyno.
      If it’s a similar clutch and it’s set up identically finger height wise there is no reason why it shouldn’t repeat. We have a spare clutch but in 25 years of racing nitro I’ve never had to put it in.
