  • TikTok's Singaporean CEO Chew Shou Zi was grilled about his ties with China during a Congress session about the dangers children face on social media platforms on Wednesday (Jan 31). A US senator repeatedly asked Mr Chew if he had ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party, to which he responded, "Senator, I'm Singaporean. No."

The senator's line of questions is totally legit because he knows that CCP membership has nothing to do with nationality. E.g., Norman Bethune, a Canadian, was a CCP party member.
Also, from Eileen Gu's case, we know that dual-citizenship is not impossible in China. So even though Zhou kept repeating he's Singaporean, this is not a proof that he doesn't have Chinese citizenship, or he is not a member of CCP. So the senator has to press on!

@Nal1 Let me say it again and please pay attention: In countries that don't allow dual citizenship, they may have special provisions for people of special importance. For example, China's Eileen Gu. Moreover, Taiwan also doesn't allow dual citizenship for naturalised foreigners, but if you are of special contribution, you are allowed to keep.your original nationality.
So, let me ask you, are you sure Singapore doesn't have this kind of provision for some important people? Are you sure Zhou is not eligible for this special treatment? I bet you don't know. Neither does the senator, that's why he has to ask! (I bet he doesn't even know Singapore doesn't allow dual citizenship.)
