Aging and finishing wood technique

- Using Gransfors Bruks broad axes we creating hand hewn antique look on a wood to be used for making furniture, door moldings, displays, shelfs and many other.( Hand hewing is ancient technique used to make flat surface from a round log, it was used way before sawmills were invented. Hand hewn logs mostly were used for building homes and ships.)
Here is several steps that we do after creating hand hewn look on a wood:
- aging the wood surface by using stain made from vinegar and steel wool,
- sanding the surface with orbital sander 120 grid sand paper
- sealing the wood with Shellac (prevent from blotching),
- staining the surface with oil based stains Early american or Dark Walnut (stain made my Minwax or ACE)
- putting finishing coat with water based polyurethane

A gentle giant and a woodworker, great combination! Nanny is such a great helper, she also guards and is a great quality control inspector, LOL! One of my kitties who is named Angel is just as hairy and big as Nanny, however, I also call him Mr. Attitude when he acts up, LOL! I love wood and done a few things, this technique I've never seen until today. I also liked the minwax. Had no idea the wool, water and vinegar could be used as a stain, great color!
Everyone needs a KITTY SUPERVISOR to keep things on schedule. I find that cats pay attention to detail. They have an excellent eye.

Darius. In everything you do, your as like God ....kind, gentle and very much a perfectionist . Quite a great craftman too. Your nanny is like a nanny, always around to help keep things in order. I miss seeing your great dog , Hudson. I still watch the video you did in commemorating his indeed wonderful friendship to you . I still always have wondered just how did he pass away? Was it old age , cancer or something else. I had a dog who , with God as my witness , looked exactly like Hudson,except for the one blue eye, his name was Mikey. I put him to sleep at seventeen and a half. He too was always my best friend and always look at your video of Hudson to bring back my good memories of my Mikey.

I am young in mind, I am old in life, but new to woodworking. Thank you for the video and ideas. I recently bought a new LT35 Wood Miser with full hydraulics and I am loving it. I want as much visible wood in my house as I have time to create. I have nearly 100 logs on the ground all ready to go.

Ha ! You realy are a kindred spirit ! I used to do scenic art for feature films, also sets for various productions and some zoo exhibit work......have done lots of aging of fresh wood, and rusting of new galvinized corregated panels.....always looking for the least toxic way to achieve these effects because we usually doing locations work....I personally do not wish to poison my planet. Your work is beautifull.....and vinegar is your friend !

Nanny is a good supervisor. My Cats Bushy and Owen look like Nanny’s clone. Bushy has passed and Owen showed up to take his place..
I like the finished look. I could see a mantel of a fire place , or beams of the ceiling of a house. I would use it mostly as an accent since it has a busy effect.
