- I realised that I've NEVER made a video dedicated to cacti and succulents... Can you believe it!? Although I'm typically more of a tropical plant gal, some of my favourite plants are actually cacti and succulents, and I feel like they don't get enough credit. Was just wondering the other day why you didn't do the cacti and succulents that often and here you are 😀
I've got a few of the same ones...
1. Yours has grown so quickly, got the same one but in 2 years only grown about 4 inches, in South West facing window
2. Got that one too, 3 years I've had it and did absolutely nothing. Even tried putting out on sunny balcony last Spring Summer to no effect.
3. Love the haworthia, they do seem to grow slower than Aloe varieties.
4. Need to get myself some jungly cacti!
5. I like the Desert Rose, I've got a couple with little leaves on, you might wanna look out for the Madagascar Palm, grows really quickly and spiky with leaves out the top
6. One of my favourites, wish my Ingens started branching! 100% put it on balcony, think I will do that this year once it starts to get a bit warmer at night, probably mid May.
Bonus one.. that is a beautiful one, loving the colours, even though like you I generally prefer green plants!
7. Burrows tail, I've got a massive one of these, grows so quickly as you say, but seems delicate, touch it and bits fall off!!
8. I think I need to get myself a Fishbone cactus too, look really good when big, they've got a few hanging in a local shop.
9. Aloe Tiki Tahi, they are beautiful too, mine has just flowered, big stalk grew within a couple of days.
10. White Ghost on my wish list, seem quite hard to come by, expensive whenever I do see them.

Hi claire! Ive had a Burros tail for many years, through good and bad (looking very bad for a whiiiile), and i will say, this one will not "regenerate" or reabsorb a lot of water into its older leaves, so if for a period of time its growing and getting less water, the leaves will be skinnier and look sparse(way less plump!) And will stay that way until months later they'll shrivel yp and fall off. Also if you let this one not get enough sun, the legginess is very apparent, because all the leaves start growijg less closely/densely on top of the stem stretching. So while Right Now theyre growing similarly, i think your bushy Burros tail had a shock at some point and used up water in its leaves to compensate. But good luck with all your newer cactus/succulents!
Ps: only reason my plant is better now is because of a severe trim, the bare stems werent a great look 😂
Hi Clair! Try the Euphorbia leuconeura (Madagascar Jewel). I absolutely love this one, it's a fast grower, too. I've been feeding mine MSU Orchid fertilizer, and she's starting to flower!
That's on my wishlist, kinda similar to the desert rose she showed actually.
I love Agave Victoriae-Reginae, it looks a bit like a comic book drawing of a plant.

I am growing desert roses from seeds for the first time this year, I am so excited if I can grow them into beautiful little plants, right now it's looking good! It's so much fun growing plants from scratch❤
The bigger burro tail must have been grown in lower light before it got to you. It's etoliated. You're growing it in great light now as the growth is nice and compact. You can't fix etoliation other than chopping the good parts and rooting them.

Looks like where your sedum was growing before you got it, didn’t have as good light as your place. The new growth is from your home so that’s why it looks healthier and like your original. Huge succulent guy here, I share your passion! CONGRATS ON 100K!!! 😃😃😃🪴🪴🪴
So there are two different sedums that look very similar. One is Donkeys tail which is a bit more blue and has rounded “leaves”. The other is Burros tail which is the one people love. The “leaves” have a minty green look and more of a tip which makes them lay nicely. If you google both you’ll be able to tell the difference. Sorry I don’t know their scientific names.
I got a Variagated euphorbia ammak for my birthday this year thanks to you and received it in February and it's already grown 3 inches 😍
I also got a cutting of that one recently, mines only grown an inch or 2 but I love him.
I love shoving haworthias in at the base of my taller succulents. They add such dimension and are happy with a wide variety of water/sun/soil needs.
I have my variegated gymnocalycium since about a month and it's currently flowering. As far as I know, you can pollinate the flowers with each other. The plant also produces little offshoots on its own, so you can propagate it by taking them off when they're big enough. Hope this helps :)
That fishbone cactus will take over your home! They get massive!! The blooms are beautiful, but they only last a day.

You can make euphorbia branch by cutting off the entire tip of an arm. I do this when I have small ones and they branch nice and low so it keeps them safer (centre of gravity is lower)

About your second sedum burrito, the pot is very crowded and as it gets more space between stems it tends to grow more "normal" : I would try to divide. Mine has 13 stems totals and is growing full and chubby 🥰

I've been expanding my rhipsalis collection and added agudoensis recently-very beautiful. Also, collecting haworthia with windows -truncata, mutica. They remind me of Chuckles jellies :-)

26:06 the good thing about stratum is that it contains a good dose of nutrients! So I think people really like it for props so they get that dose during root growth! ❤
29:50 and it looks your newer burritos tail wasn’t getting enough light before it came to you. I believe that’s why the new growth looks compact and plump, while the older growth looks etiolated.

Cactus always looks great in terracotta pots. Pick a good size one, to prevent the plant from falling over. Your fern leaf is amazing 😯!!! Congratulation on your 100,000 subscriber plaque. I have always enjoyed all your videos!!!!
I recommend hawrothia obtusa - it's my favourite, it looks so alien and cute. Also, haworthia truncata. Very unusual, very easy to take care of, and they stay pretty small.
All my big euphorbias are in clay pots. Gives them a bit of weight lol

What a beatiful species ^^ the Adenium has very pretty leaves. Some thing you can do with it (since i can see yours has the main "branch" quite long) is to accually cut it. Similar to as you showed with euphorbias the adenium will brach from the spots where the leaves were, you dont have to scared to cut quite low :) im doing that with mine at the moment since spring is good time to do it :) i dont want this comment to be too long so if you'd like more info just let me know :)

Gymnocalycium variegated plants are so addicting! It restarted my cacti addiction. 😅 They grow pretty slowly and at most maybe you will need a 5-6 inch pot. When it flowers, and if you have 2 flowers at the same time, just use a small makeup brush to spread pollen from one flower to another. If its successful, the flower wont fall of and will start to look rounder and rounder. When it turns pink and it splits open, your seeds are ready!
I don't own many cacti and succulents but right now I really love my variegated bear paw! I also used to have a beautiful fishbone cactus and it was growing really well, saddly it rotted from the base of the stems all of a sudden 😭
I agree with one of the other comments your burros tail had to have gone through something before you got it. See what happens chopping and propagate each one of the little leaves will give you a new plant I had one and it did go down hill one winter
I love my fernleaf cactus so much, I had to start mine from cuttings but she looks full and gorgeous now
Propagating the Sedum is the easiest thing in the world! When a leaf falls off and onto soil it will root and grow a new plant. I had mine in a large pot with other succulents and had to take out the leaves to stop it from overgrowing the whole pot 😅

The new, full burro’s tail plant you have looks weird to you because it was not growing in bright light before it came to your house. The new growth is tighter because it’s in higher light. Just my 2 cent guess!
I find the fern leaf cactus to be a really fast grower when it gets going! I keep mine in an anthurium mix in terra cotta and it’s loving life. Loved this vid :) yes please to pt. 2! 🖤
I have only a few succulents and no cacti to speak of, but your jungle cacti persuade me to get lepismium bolivianum ... and now I need more of them :-) Thank you for haring.
I’d be terrified of repotting that first beast, I’ve got a big euphorbia about thigh high I need to repot this year, not looking forward to it either!!
My Oma and Opa had a rancher home back when I was a kid that had a huge walk through terrarium octagon right in the center of the home, all living spaces/bedrooms were around the parameter, I’m praying for a chance to build our own indoor greenhouse / terrarium and I’d love to have one tropical, one more arid
I had a bigger Adenium that had a big caudex… like the one in the picture you posted…I overwatered… was one of my absolute favs and it went to mush, currently trying to find another, it’s one of my favs I found in Hawaii, even had it tattooed on my arm with the Plumeria and hibiscus
I’ve tried fluval for a couple things, mixed reviews, but it’s certainly more messy if it stays wet it breaks down more and becomes mud, so honestly I don’t see huge benefits
Lovely collection Claire! I too love cactus and succulents, in great part because I'm a chronic underwaterer! Also, because a lot of of them stay reasonably small and floor space is at a premium in my house. Plus, giant dogs, so yeah, accidents happen with floor plants! 😳

Like you I'm not a huge fan of colour in my houseplants; I have a lot of colourful art on the walls and want my plants to compliment it, not fight it.
As for your sedums, the old growth (on your new, bigger plant) looks like it happened whilst the plant didn't have good light conditions! The internodals are too long and the leaves are rather slender/curved, which usually indicate too low a light. Was it from a private seller /swap? The new growth in your care looks great though! In time I think it will look more and more like your smaller plant but unfortunately the old growth won't get any better. I would try taking one stem and propagating it via leaf cuttings to get many new plantlets that will grow beautifully in your lighting conditions. Wouldn't take long to have a big pot full of them that should grow nice and dense!

I’m propping Alocasia frydek corms in fluval and they are LOVING it. I have them in a jar with a tight lid and they are already rooting and sprouting after just 3 weeks! They are still little babies but the green leaves are just starting to poke out and it’s awesome!!!! 👏🏾 I was hoping you would show more of the African milk tree because yours is growing much quicker than mine and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong with it. It’s right by my window and under a grow light. I don’t overwater it, roots are healthy… So I’m confused as to why it seems to be stuck.

Love your cacti/succulent collection! I too have a burrow's tail. I had three bushels (3 stems per bushel) potted up together in a drainage pot and one bushel in a no drainage pot (my only plant I have in no drainage). The one in no drainage is doing so much better - none of that crinkley-ness toward the base of the stems and its growing much fuller!! I actually ended up tossing the one in drainage bc it got to looking so bad lol I found that interesting!!
22:57 In regards to some of your questions and comments about the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii. So, yes, if you pollinate with another G. mihanovichii (and even some other species within that genus, which hybridizes super easy), it will develop a small fruit. It starts out green and then as it matures it changes to a red color, it then rips itself when it is ready for harvest. I imagine it does that so it`s easier to attract polinators, since the skin of the fruit is a bit hardy (for bugs, the main group of pollinators of Gymnocalycium cacti). It`s nice that it`s in a high pot, a lot of people argue that Gymnos have long taproots and that it prefers to have tall pots. Contrary to some other genus, Gymnocalycium tends to grow on umid subtropical climates, so it can handle a bit more umidity and a bit more organic matter on the substrate. I`m saying this bc people tend to avoid organic components when making substrate mixes for cacti. It`s funny (and I say this in a positive way) to see somebody that is not in the Gymno hobby, which is a hobby in itself believe it or not, talking about not getting duplicates bc there are people that ONLY collect variegated G. mihanovichii lol A fun fact about Gymnocalycium, is that gymno = naked, and calyx = bud. So the name of the genus means ``naked bud``, that is bc the flower doesn`t have any spikes or hairs, and is, thus, ``naked``.

I have a Crown of Thorns (euphoria milii) that has been spitting out flowers left and right and it's been making me really happy.
I just purchased an Aloe Aristata (Snow) it’s so interesting and different. Seems to be very easy to care for and lovely to look at. And at a garden seminar I found another plant I just had to buy lol it’s a Tigers Jaw (faucerta Tigrina) still learning how to care for this, but so far it’s doing well. Love watching your videos and congratulations on your 100,000 plaque.

Check out Astrophytum, Ariocarpus, and Lophophora. I think you’ll like them. Lophophora might be illegal to grow in the UK, though. I have lots of cactus recommendations, but hardly any of them can be grown at home. I mostly grow columnar cacti. They are too tall and heavy for indoors. They also etiolated and bend towards the light. They really need to be grown in full sun. Oreocereus, Espostoa, Eulychnia, Pilosocereus are awesome. If you want a crazy columnar check out Pilosocereus palmeri. Copiapoa are also an amazing genus, but they are hard to grow. They come from the most arid deserts on earth.

Yes part 2 please and also stratum is overrated for me. Yes the flowers can be pollenated and you can get seed if the flower fruits. You have to let it dry out a the harvest the seeds. You can pot them in moist soil and put them in a plastic bag for 4 months and the start opening the bag little by little

I love your succulents, that's all I have for Plants, and I love them. I don't have room for jungle type plants. They are too big. Plus to be honest I really don't like them. But succulents have my heart. I love your variegated cactus that has 2 little buds. I have been looking at that one, on an on-line plant shop here in Canada. I'm waiting until I have a bit more money, to order it and an inner variegated Indian Rope succulent. I have 18 Green Indian Rope Hoya's. But no variegated ones. So hope to have some, by the end of the summer. They really are beautiful. The reason I have so many Hoya Carnosa Compact's, is because I rescued 16 of them from a nursery, they had Mealy bugs, and got them all for 16.00 a dollar each. I have been working with them, since before Christmas, and Finally they are putting out new growth, which is great, as they were only 2-3 leaf plants. I love watching their progress. My other 2 re about 5-6 yrs old now, with lots of growth. I am training them to climb up a plant Rack, type thing. They are doing good on them.

All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.
@34:50 I don't mean to be yet another person telling you that this plant is not an Aloe VERA. It is absolutely an Aloe, and is not at all a Haworthia, but Aloe vera is a specific species in the Aloe genus, and it is the one with medicinal properties. There are many other Aloe in the genus that are different species/cultivars/hybrids and I personally have a collection of both Aloe vera and other Aloe species because I find them so attractive around the house. Not trying to be rude or anything, I just wanted to try and clarify that because when they say that plant is not an Aloe vera, they are technically correct. (although they're wrong to claim it is a Haworthia!)
It’s an Aristaloe hybrid, not an Aloe.
@@morningstar8187bro. I googled Aloe Tiki Tahi and hers is identical to it. Hundreds of identical pictures to hers all call the same thing. Idk what to tell you guys.
@@1faithchick7 It’s a commercial name. Sellers use a lot of invalid and outdated names. Stores still sell snake plants as Sansevieria even though the genus is invalid. Taxonomy evolves over time. Genuses and species are shuffled around. New genuses are created. Old genuses are merged together. It’s not set in stone. Google “Aristaloe aristata”
@@1faithchick7 btw using that same logic “cowboy cactus” euphorbias are are a cactus. Just because stores use a fancy commercial name doesn’t make that name correct. The genus Aloe has been split into multiple genuses quite recently.
Hi, I have a non varigated version of your gymnocalycium stenopleurum, I find one side appears larger because light is coming from one side, rotate it regularly and it seems to redistribute the moisture inside making it more regular in shape or just embrace it. It seems to flower easily year round for me indoors in New Zealand and self polinates, i tried to pollinate mine and it didnt work, but a month later a new flower did it itself or a insect did it, either way i now have a fruit.
I dont have a large cactus collection but the one I've found most extreme for this is stenocactus crispatus (reminds me of a brain he's pretty cool) ......... it's probably considered leaning, but I find it corrects itself when rotated. My theory is it redistributes the moisture in the plant away from the heat to conserve moisture.
I can see some large terracotta planters in your future 😂 Help keep those large euphorbia upright 😀🇨🇦

The second euphorbia looks like my E. mayurnathanii.. it grows slower in the beginning, I bought mine last spring and it hasn't given me any new growth so far. Hopefully this summer it will 😊
I recomend you look at Euphorbia platyclada and Aloe erinacea, they're two of my favorite succulents 🤩

So many beautiful plants!! I’d really recommend looking at the opuntia rubescens ‘consolea’ - easiest cactus I have and the way it looks so 2D contrasts nicely with the euphorbia it lives next to! Could be a great addition for future cactus room!
Oh roadkill cactus, they get pretty beefy for an indoor setting though.

I always hear how easy succulents are and they are so hard for me. I either over water or go too far and underwater. I cannot get it right. My jades will be fine then drop a ton of leaves. Can’t keep string ofs alive. And others. I don’t do well with them. I wish I could because I love jades when they take the tree form and string of turtles

Also; put your Haworthia under a grow light, a succulent soil mix, when watering use some fertilizer in your water for it and they grow so so fast

Hummingbirds love desert roses 🌹. I know you don’t have them in England, but other pollinators will be attracted to it should you ever put it outdoors.

There is more to the strelitzia than just looking amazing. My father is busy working with some of the universities here is South Africa, concerning its medical properties. The seeds can be used to treat diabetes is a far superior way than insulin (which eventually becomes toxic), they are still figuring out quantities, and which species have the best chemicals, but the research looks very promising. (Edit: seeds are toxic if you just eat them, i believe you can make a tea by soaking them in hot water, but still.. be very cautious with quantities if you are adamant on testing, as too much will be poisonous)
