Think of it this way... Seals have full range of motion, sharp teeth, powerful bite, and a mouth teaming with bacteria. It's a really bad combo. If his bite doesn't kill you, the infection likely will.

Probably yes but humans can’t pet him/her because he/she is going to be bullied by other seals if they do so. They protected him/her from a violent death or severe injuries.

Thank you for your inquiry but I’m not professional about animals. I’m just a student.
So far, I’ve learned that the reason for the touching restriction is because we have to prevent animals from getting used to humans. If we keep playing with them, they will recognize humans as non-threat. It results in more numbers of poaching and killings by bad people, because they just don’t run away from them.
It could lead to endangering animals or even the loss of species.

@@deceitfulviper I really don't think it would've made a difference. The fact that they didn't actively attack it or try to scare it off is enough to teach it not to be afraid of them. Offering food would be a different thing because it would teach the seal to actively seek out humans in hopes of receiving food. The simple act of petting it or touching I don't think would motivate it to approach humans anymore than their behavior in this video did.

The Blo0P I think it’s because when photographers are taking photos of wild animals, they’re not supposed to make more curious animals used to humans. I think it’s more to protect the animals than us, so they still have a reaction about danger.
if its a seal pup if you touch it the mother may not think it is theirs and leave it alienated. the smell of human contact bothers them I guess??

Almost all quoted cases involved the pup being physically removed from the beach and taken home. One case was taken to the car. One case saw the pup handled by ppl and dogs for the whole day. Obviously that's not what i mean.

Now the reason why this situation is correlated with petting them is because one, the seals might think that humans are friendly where in fact there are people who are NOT friendly. Two, if you start to pet them they will grow attached to you and that can cause some problems for example, they might not want to go back to their parents which is a total D-move. I understand your urge to pet them but for the sake of them not getting slaughtered for their meat and possibly cutting off their connections with their family I suggest you control your urges. there will be a time.

I think it’s illegal because if they get too close to humans they aren’t able to determine which are friendly and which aren’t. So the poor cute things will just scoot boop right up to a hunter. It also could be it messed with their heads about other animals but I’m not too positive on that. Especially if they’re pups
