  • Skiers have been trekking into Tuckerman Ravine for more than a century. Plan your trip: goo.gl/h0dJcY.
Because this glacial cirque on the slopes of Mount Washington holds snow late into the spring and early summer, it has become one of the Northeast's iconic backcountry ski destinations. These photographs and film clips, from the Appalachian Mountain Club's Library & Archives, show skiers in Tuckerman Ravine in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, the decades when backcountry and downhill skiing began to boom.

Great Footage. I had no idea skiing was popular in the 30s and that people were taking on Tucks then (with those old skis and ski boots no less). Wow.

Nifty. A friend of mine Colin & I made the trip from Ottawa in 2003. Good times.

There is supposedly a film of the great Brooks Dodge skiing the headwall, but I've never been able to track it down.

It's always great to see and hear about the rich history of Tuckerman Ravine. The Friends of Tuckerman Ravine works closely with the USFS and AMC to preserve and protect this unique resource. We are also helping to sponsor a student led film team that will be producing a new ravine documentary. If you have stories, images or even old film archives that you can share with us, we'd love to hear from you! www.friendsoftuckermanravine.org/ravinefilm

My dad said back in the 1950s they would just leave their skis in the back of one of the lean-tos along the trail and just grab them the following season. Nobody stole anything.

Seems like a lot of people were pretty scantily clad. Tradition?

It's spring and early summer skiing. It's probably very warm out
