About two weeks ago, Springfield released the 18" and 20" barrel Hellion rifles! They improved the safeties.

I've had mine for a few months now too. I use it for friday night rifle league and Black rifle league on Saturdays in Washington state.
So far, It has been very reliable and accurate with a variety of ammo. Cheap Wolf, Tula, and PMC 55gr runs fine. But loud, since the muzzle is much closer to your ear than AR15. Hornady/Lake City/Frontier 68gr and 77gr bthp feels light. Less muzzle blast. More "kick" recoil. The whole gun kicks AR180ish since it has an AR180 style bolt carrier. Coil recoil spring fits inside of the bolt carrier like G36 and AR180, AK47, MCX, Bren too.
Trigger is not much different than a M&P, VP9 or Glock. Very similar to striker pistol feel. Not worth complaining about. It would be nice if it included an adjustment for takeup.
Bullpup handles unique. Recoil impulse is lighter than my friends Tavor, long stroke piston vs short.
No bolt carrier mass, unlike Tavor, which is a heavier long stroke design. This is more G36k-ish.
Hellion feels slightly different than an AUG. Slower and heavier. Aug has a cleaner single action style trigger compared to longer 2 stage on Hellion. But this VHS-2 has an adjustable gas block and suppressor setting. Those other bullpups don't. The short stroke piston is nice with suppressor. No blowback, no gas face. Gas vents out the front. One friend let me try his Keltec RDB, but it jammed, and trigger froze. He had to send it back. I didn't get much time with it.
When reloading the VHS-2, I grab the new mag, and use my left thumb to bump the empty mag out. The mag release is behind the mag, like HK G36/AK47. You can "karate chop" the bolt release instead of pinch. Using the charging handle is another option, but awkward and takes longer because it's all the way up front.
My only complaint is the weight. You would think an all-polymer frame bullpup would weight less. Slightly heavier than Mk18. Same length. This Feels more like a bullpup M14 when compared to Mk18. Different balance too. The trigger is 16 inches length of pull from your shoulder. Versus 12 inches with AR15+pistol brace. But this points faster. Less weight towards muzzle. The length of pull feels a mile away, Like it's made for someone over 6 foot tall. Not sure how the metric conversion works out. Read: "Gun for Tall people"
but allows you to maneuver it one handed. Neutral balance.
I replaced the stock four prong flash hider. I have a dedicated outdated Liberty monocore thread-on-leave-on 223 Can, and KAK blast forwarding redirecting muzzle device for when the suppressor is on another gun, or short overall length is needed.
This is the single biggest difference of any mod you can do now.. It seems louder than M4. Muzzle is closer to your ear.
I went with the Magpul+rubber grip and mlok front grip. The mlok handguard doesn't have a metal heatshield or slots that work comfortably with a weapons light. I would like to see a aluminum picatinny handguard setup for optimum length for Surefire Scout or Cloud defense weapons light.
It doesn't look like VHS-2 military trigger group or safety is compatible with Hellion...a few design differences. Different chassis and grip assembly, and safety. Maybe some 922r or ITAR legal issues. It would be nice if it came with 3 position full auto, but ATF's gotta go first đŸ»đŸ‘
    Overall,
    I like this gun
Hopefully some new aftermarket accessories will resolve these shortcomings.

    • @kassenz
      @kassenz Pƙed rokem +1

@@mikeabraham4224 the entire frame and trigger assembly is polymer. I haven't over torqued it yet. But it feels like it's threading into plastic. The only metal I saw was : barrel, bolt, gas block, recoil spring assembly, trigger bar, pins, qd sling point, pop up sights, optic rail. And serial numbered barrel is in a trunion. I don't see any way to get inside of the trigger or trunion area. Hammer and sear are metal, but cassette is plastic. Most of the parts are the same type of plastic, same used in Springfield/HS XD models. Feels sturdy. It doesn't feel like a aftermarket bullpup kit at all.

I’m seeing this in the $1700 dollar range lately. The bolt release is weird for sure. The safety selector is slightly awkward when you are used to an AR but your thumb adapts pretty quickly. I have large to extra large hands and don’t have an issue with mine. I have not put it on paper yet but with a Primary Arms LPVO it seemed to be grouping nicely shooting into a dirt hillside 100-150 yards away using Red Army ammo. I like it. Good review by the way.

It's not ergonomic, but I'm 6'3" tall, so my hands are probably larger that most.
The trigger is the Hellion's worst aspect, everything else is great; I'm actually surprised MrGunsNGear was so bothered by the bolt release. It's an easy ambidextrous bolt release design, & mine is easy AF to actuate.

Not me. One of the main reasons to get a 16 bullpup is so you dint have to F with or worry about their BS new pistol brace rule (if it holds) and you still have basically a rifle not much longer in overall length than an ar pistol with a brace and 10 in barrel.
F their pistol brace I can shoot my scorpion just fine and with accurate precision in the distances that I would be using it to defend myself or other people anyway. Then I also have my bullpup.

The bullpup design allows for better mobility inside of vehicles and when in buildings, but this rifle belongs in the field and isn't hindered by length when it's time to fight through buildings.

Question about the triggers in Bullpups.? Why hasn't someone replaced the "trigger linkage bar" with a taught steel wire and changed the operation from push to pull.? If there is a ratchet cog at one end then it could be tightened as the steel wire will inevitably stretch over time, but even as it stretches the wire will will simply slacked and the trigger pull will become a little "squishier". As the trigger is one of the primary complaints about bullpups, I am amazed that no one has fixed the "squishy trigger" issue.

I really do like Mr, GunsnGear, but For how many videos I’ve seen of this rifle, it’s amazing to see all the “experts” continuing to run the bolt release incorrectly 😂. I’m an instructor, myself, so I try to do as much research as I can. The design is meant for you to insert the mag, rock your hand back and push the end of your thumb into the release. No pinching required. This info was easy to find, even for me

A modernized AUG or a much improved X95 seem like the best bullpups, but seeing as those won't exist I'm interested in this one. Springfield screwed up putting a different grip on it than the VHS2 has (kinda like the people that made it had that grip for a reason), and the LOP is just a struggle for me but maybe I'll get one.

In my (admittedly limited duration and non-professional) experience with my Hellion, I've noticed that you do NOT have to squeeze the bolt release tabs. You can hook a finger on the front part, and just pull back like charging an AR15 from only the left side. It's stiff, but doable, and gloves shouldn't be a factor with it. It's also far quicker for me.
My problem comes in with mag insertions. If I try to seat a magazine and tap it in the mag well, the stock smokes me in the jaw if it slides off my shoulder. I also don't really like fingering the magwell to lock the bolt open without a mag. I haven't found a workaround for that, and I feel like "VHS finger" could be the next "Garand thumb" if you slip.
And, for anyone curious, my Hellion works with every mag I've tried - aluminum mags, P-Mags, 40 round P-Mags, Surefire 60 round mags, Schmeisser S-60 mags, and my Magpul D-60. The D-60 REALLY digs into your shooting wrist though, due to the bullpup design, so I don't really advise it.

Noveske has the patent on nitriding and they don't even nitride their barrels.
The hellion is designed FOR assaulting, which typically means you may be laying down long strings of fire in a short span of time, really heating up the barrel.

@@johnschmidt501 "military version" LOL Maybe that's because they don't know how to chrome line ? Properly ? I have a number of "Nitrided" barrels and i'm NOT impressed. One example is my PSA M16 with FN CHF barrel is about a 1.5-2MOA rifle with 77 grain OTM's while my Aero M16 with Nitrided barrel has horrible accuracy. My PWS Mod1 Mk116 has a nitrided barrel and it's blah. I have a BCM BFH Mk2 16" middy that shoots 77 gr OTM's 0.75" MOA and a DDM4V11Pro that shoots 77 grain OTM's 0.75"MOA. The BCM is NOT a heavy barrel, rather government profile while the DD is a S2W barrel ie. their Heavy Barrel. The fact that the nitrided heavy barrel of the DD can't outshoot the BFH BCM government profile barrel shows me that i should NOT be impressed with nitrided barrels.
My Noveske SPR with 416R SPR profile shoots less than 0.5" MOA.
Point being.... i'm not impressed with nitrided barrels... the accuracy OR the longevity.
Daniel Defense makes their rifles for SOCOM and foreign armies, Law Enforcement.. etc. An old Ranger Buddy of mine is their head of sales for military, Law Enforcement and foreign and he personally told me in 2017 at the NRA convention in Atlanta WHY they stopped nitriding the S2W barrel on their Pro line.. and it is because the difference in accuracy is negligible and the chrome lining lasts longer.
Who knows though... i have an open mind... maybe over time from rounds 5k-15k the nitrided barrel is more accurate ? I doubt it but to PROVE it, would require testing.

I really like the iron sights as well. They are cowitnessed with a vortex red dot.
Tend to use the charging handle more than the bolt release button at the mag well. The safety is fine for me as well. I would say it could be turned just a few degrees downward and it would be perfect.
