      Good morning Paul, great to hear you've got the mail coach they're beautiful item, Glad you liked the look of these wagons I can't believe it's taken me so long to get around to using them. But that one of the reasons I was quite keen to try and get the 3- Rail down so I was able to use some of the items I've had sitting in boxes for far too long, inevitably, though, I have now bought a few extras here and there, I was at TCS show in Leicester last weekend I couldn't help but come away with some lovely wagons.

    Hi there Oscar ,, another gr8 video there m8. All the trains i have been getting in the last 12 months or so i have given them all them a good clean with cotton buds or tips and i use the generic home brand surface cleaner that you use on benchtops and stoves and sinks. I usually do a test on the painted surfaces first to see if the cleaner is going to affect the paint or not and then just go at it until my eyes get sore or i have had enough of cleaning for the night. Ive found it gets rid of dust dirt oil residue and nicotine stains off old trains and dry and dry it with a clean cotton buds or a tissue to clean up the bits that are still wet form the clean.
    I have a process of of giving the carriages or loco's a good brush down with a soft brissle brush the give it a going over with a manky brush (old shaggy toothbrush and the shaggier the better).
    I have this big long toothbrush that is from the 1960's and it works a treat. After that i clean all the trains roof sides and underneath i clean and polish the wheels with metho and that gets the wheels grime and dirt off them really good. Then i oil the axle boxs axles or pin points and then put a drop or 2 on all the moving parts like the hooks the centre pivot between the bogie and the carriage then laslty give the wheels a good spin and adjust the back to back wheel width if needed.
    The word you are looking for is corrosion or electrolysis beetween the alloy and the steel and is a common thing that iv seen in the last 30 or so years of owning a scrap metal business. The steel has a reaction to the alloy or die cast and corrodes each other out so if a boat is getting built it has to be all alloy construction as in the welds. I have seen old ally boats i have picked up for scrap that have used steel bolts on alloy and has rotted the alloy into a fine white powder but it does make it easier to clean up the alloy for scrapping of it.
    Anyhoo thanks again for the gr8 videos you do for us all.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

    When I had my Hornby Dublo system, I had 3 Duchess class, one in LMS red, one in LMS black and the 3rd in BR green. They were great looking locomotives. The only fault I found was that the rear 2 wheel truck had a tendency to de-rail, when proceeding backwards through points in the loco shed/yard area. I never had any trouble with the A4’s, or the Standard 4 tank, or the 0-6-2 tanks. There are several Dublo layouts which can be seen on CZcams. I greatly enjoy watching them all, but I always look to see what you are doing first! Kindest regards from Christopher in sunny (today) Sussex.

      @@ldb281 Having seen a photo of Sir William Stanier in the cab of 6256 (at the naming of the loco I believe?), I wanted a Duchess in the late period LMS black, with broad, maroon centre lining, with a fine, straw yellow edging.
      I got an old, much play worn, Duchess of Montrose at a toy fair, and stripped the body back to bare metal, and resprayed it with Halfords car paint. I bought some transfers of the lettering and numbers and had a go at it!
      This was back in 1999 and it was possible to pick up Dublo bodies which had been refinished, some quite skilfully.
      I also had a BR blue Duchess and an 0-6-2 tank. I also attempted to convert a Hornby A3 to three rail, but it lacked the weight to pull more than 2 coaches! Watching the splendid videos that Oscar does, I am tempted to run a bit of Dublo, but I lack the space. At the moment I am content to run 1970 to 1990 trains (Hornby, mainline, triang, airfix, wren etc in my loft space.

I had a few derailments running the duchesses through the curve & point near the engine shed near the sper that goes off to the turntable initially when I was putting the track down I lifted, adjusted, relayed the track slightly differently on a couple of occasions, I've hit upon a combination of curves and points, which seems to work... fingers crossed for now.

    So I`m not the only one that`s had problems with the Morley hand held units! I have had 3 that have had wires that have broken in various places, one went the same place as yours near the controller itself, I did a repair only for a few days later a wire broke near the middle of the cable. Then the other hand held unit did the same thing as your with the dial on zero the train went off like a shot, that wire had broken near where the plug goes into the unit. Then when I was using my Morley Crawler controller one of those hand held units developed a broken wire, that was found to be about 5 inches from the controller plug. These had held units seem to have real quality issues which is very disappointing as the controller itself is a good piece of kit.
    Regards
    Kev

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Kev, yes this is the second unit that this has happened to, although the first unit that went was as a result of me, accidentally tripping & kicking the control unit which I had stupidly left on the floor. This time around, I couldn't pinpoint an exact time it happened so I suspect just through use the cable has fractured. I've also had to rewire my Hammant & Morgan Hand Held Control Unit CUI in the past as one of the cables had fractured were enters the metal housing. I think there is only so much manipulation of any cable before it brakes, maybe a slightly heavier weight cable would be the an improvement, but I suspect with continued use a fraction will eventually develop. Still a lot more reliable than a Bluetooth or Wifi connection.

    Hi Oscar,
    Great maintenance video and running session with the refurbed trucks. Very timely as I picked up an EDP12 train set this week for a good price. Some damage to the end flaps of the box, otherwise play wear in keeping with age. The Duchess of Montrose, in green livery, is slightly below yours, condition wise. I don’t do 3 rail therefore considering converting to 2 rail, any pointers greatly appreciated. To some it might be sacrilege to do that but I am not in a position to branch out into 3 rail.

      Hi Gordon, thanks again for looking in. Glad you like the look of the trucks after the cleanup. Sounds like a great idea having a go at a conversion with the Duchess of Montrose. I've not tried a conversion either way from 2 Rail or to 3 Rail or 3 Rail to 2 rail. It might be slightly more complicated going 3 Rail to two Rail as a way of isolating/ insulating the wheels on one or both sides of the model will need to be worked out. I've included the link below which addresses the issues when making the 3 to 2 conversion.

    Hi Oscar,
    Your Duchess seems to have plenty of get up and go for a horseshoe version.
    I have two Atholls, one a horse shoe type and the other a block magnet.
    The horseshoe type has never has the sort of get up and go yours has, no matter how much I fettle it or magnetise it.
    New wagons look good with the timber loads.
    I also have Morley Controllers so I may have to keep an eye on my handhelds.
    Although I find them generally very good.
    If I had one gripe, it would be nice to have a positive click for off when using the main body control rheostat.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi, thanks for watching I magnetised the horseshoe as recommended by Ronald Dodd a number of times down the length of a magnet. The horseshoe motors definitely don't have the get up and go of the block magnet motors. Both my handheld units and the main body control units have centre click off, I got my first unit coming out of the first lockdown, I had read when researching these controllers that originally there was no centre click off position on many of there units, the centre clicked off feature was listed as one of the features of the Vanguard unit on their website at the point, I made my first purchase. I found them to be great equipment, far and away the best control I've experienced so far with the old model railway items in my collection.
