  • Testing a few of my air rifle moderators down range to see which is most effective and holds the tightest groups at range
i'm testing the older Bsa vc, the Weihrauch hw100 and the Airmaks modular silencer from my Katran.
we look at group size in pretty tricky wind at 45yds
i also have a little shoot on my biathlon targets
the rifle is an Anschutz 9015 the scope is a prs specific discover ed 5-25x56

I discovered by accident that an old, inexpensive steel moderator improves the accuracy of my springers. The difference isn't vast, but definitely noticeable. I assume that's because the weight helps to reduce movement of the barrel.

      @Biffo1262 Před rokem +4

Yes, it reduces muzzle flip same as a barrel weight and the only reason I would use a silencer on a springer.

Haven't been able to watch this vid as yet, I'm stuck in McDonald's having breakie, but I have found that moderators can make a profound difference in accuracy, my hw 95. 177's accuracy was greatly improved by swapping out the weihrauch silencer for a huggett belita 👍🏻.
Looking forward to getting home and giving the video a good watch 👍🏻👍🏻

I have a hw mod with my gun and although very good i wanted something shorter. After scanning a few different ones from different brand's, i settled with an A-tech wave moderator. I'll say this.. it's cheaper than the hw mod by 40 quid and it's quieter too. Accuracy is still great and i saved over an inch and a half in length. Looks great too.

At 50 yards my locally assembled (Philippines) PCP with 1,800 psi plenum, 1.2 gram (18.5 grain) 22 cal at 875 ftps holds sub 1" groups. BTW - using homemade modulator - plastic tube, rubber hose to create baffles, bottle bottoms for caps, and hair curlers for expansion chambers

I have a Walther RM8 with a silencer which I believe to be a Weirauch, and a Walther Reign on which I use a Hogan Decimeater. Both good and quiet. Never noticed any accuracy issues with either silencer. What is surprising is the dramatic amount of POI shift with/without silencer on the Reign. POI drops by 70mm at 40m when silencer fitted. Not a velocity issue as checked by chrono. Tight groups under both conditions. Same test on the RM8 with similar power output yeils about 12mm POI shit only.

Shame about the wind, would of been very interesting to see groups on a calm day. There was barely any wind where I am yesterday so played around with moderators on my Steyr Pro X. Had intended to use an old SAK but was slightly outperformed by the Weirauch borrowed from my HW100KTLA. There's a guy on the airgun forums who makes silencers and claims to be a bit quieter than the Weirauch. I've asked for one to be square ended at each end as I think it will suit the look better than tapered.
Be interesting to see how it perform. Noise levels aren't my main concern as such, looking for a tight group and to suit the overall appearance.
While I was there I did some pellet testing with the HW100KTLA at 40 meters.
Really likes the standard weight QYS Streamline 4.50, tightest groups I've seen so far.

I was quite surprised you were saying the Weihrauch HW100 was going to be pretty much the quietest you're going to get at the start. The few Weihrauch HW100 I have had over the years always had relatively mediocre performers when it came to audible levels. Even the budget minded Hogan Decimeater and Viper 2 were both noticeably quieter.

Any reason why you chose to use the shooting glove when you decided to use a HFT target when all results were equal to your point and in the same prone position. also why did you arrange such an in depth test in such conditions . why not set up inside like at a indoor shooting range . I have no idea why you would think this is worth logging

It was a nice excuse to get out the workshop 😉
Reality is I'm always outdoors at the mercy of the wind/weather.
You would be amazed how many people really don't understand how the wind will affect groupings etc. Especially on here you will seldom see it. Everything is edited to be perfect. I'm quite happy to show what real world conditions look like even when I shoot badly.
I could have easily edited all that to look perfect, but its not my style.. 😉

Your heart rate is being partially affected by you talking, if you watch yourself you are actually getting slightly out of breath making your heart work harder which makes even more out of breath because the heart is the muscle car of the body, it is a big muscle that likes to guzzle oxygen, I like your commentary however it may be worth doing a test, you say its when the cameras are on because when your not filming your not commentating. Love the channel, I am 60 now and have been shooting since I was eight without a break and yet I still learn new things from your channel, keep up the good work.

Hello, The Moderator, Silencer, As really influence the performance the assuracy in one way that sometimes the best choice pellet for one configuration will not perform the same way with the other one.
For eatch extra update to the original configuration you need to test again other pellets to find out the most switable for that configuration.

98bpm/min, normal? mate see a Dr, seriously, camera or no camera. Ok good video, no need for a crazy heart rate. I think many silencers/moderators for PCP/airguns are full of design flaws/over designed, as in a complicated system trying to mimic the gimmicky systems of real firearm silencers where the ballistics are way way different. For instance if one uses a firearms silencer on a PCP, same calibre, it's really going to affect the trajectory. Too many baffles, lead to too much internal turbulence. If that turbulence interferes with the projectile before (and to a lesser degree after) the projectile leaves that instrument then, sure the trajectory could be interfered with. Simple plates (acting as an orifice plate design) with the correct (yes, i say correct) machining will help to reduce turbulence, especially at the exit. In fact early real firearm silencers were nothing but a bunch or orifice plates within a tube and even today they suppress sound levels as good as any funky CNC milled chunk of metal. But I digress. I use a basic version of one orifice plate silencer (it's an old but works perfectly- Airforce airguns-whether they made it or not I don't know), LW barrel 0.22cal and it has basically zero affect on slug trajectory at 50-53m out. Nice rifle too BTW. Great looking channel, I'm into fishing as well. Subscribing.

No guarantee how things are going to work out but worth experimenting with, which is why I have a varied collection, currently using a FOX 300 silencer.

    • @lankymk

      @@peteralexben
One reason I don't like silencers with (mesh) openings is I don't like the idea of water getting inside on a rainy day, whether that's an actual problem I don't know.
One thing I like about the Fox silencer design is no felt inside so wont clog up, plus it's easy to strip and clean if needed.
Maybe a future test video for Tillly, see how easy for water to enter a meshed silencer, wet the inside to see effects of moisture inside a silencer and test dirty felts compared to clean.
I've used silencers for years and never had an issue but would be interesting to see this stuff tested.
