- Summer must be getting closer because to weeds are starting to grow again.
Some of my maize ground was missed when strip sprayed...what to do, one of the last cows has calved and I've got a couple that are going to the works to.

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

I don't farm anymore but still like to watch good video
👍
The expression of the cockie that I worked for in relation to another weed (ragwort) at Wharepapa South was 1 years seeding 9 years weeding, we didn’t spray back then, we pulled it, and there is only one word to describe that job, hard yakka, especially when much of it had crowns that could be as big as a small shovel head indicating that the plant was regrowth and what you were doing was a waste of time but I was just a know nothing boy and told to shut up and keep on pulling, blisters and all!
We owned a lifestyle block for 32 years and had an IH454 to do various jobs for about 16 of those years. I knew that tractor of yours was an IH model as soon as I heard the starter motor lol and only got a quick glimpse of some of the controls in the vid, but the dash layout, stop, start, run lever and the gear/PTO selection panel all look exactly the same as the arrangement on the 454. Is the park brake down at the rear of the L/H/S footrest panel as well? … In that 16 years that tractor never missed a beat, the only thing it needed was normal routine servicing (which I could do), it didn’t even need a battery as it had an Optima Red Top with a 720cca rating in it when we bought it … great old tractor.
The water in the drains looks pretty clean from what i can see already, but i do like a bit native flora along water ways
Great video Andy its always best to get rid of passengers early before the scheduled drops like an a ABs pass
😂👌
Hey Andrew, that MT heifer still has a high BW it's now just BBQ worth 😉
Haha that’s a brilliant dad joke 😂😂
I can’t wait until you hit 20k so you can show us the finich contracting yard
That video Won’t be till next winter now probably, they’re getting really busy and I’d rather do a vid while all there gears in the yard 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer sweat as👍
The new replacement heifer I kept this season, was in heat and I di⁰dn't notice. I was walking her mom out of the milking area and she tried to ride me from behind she almost had me glad my brother was helping because he yelled at the right time so I got away quickly it could of been bad.
Love the way you are with your ladies ❤
Thanks 🙏
Another great video. That paddock where they missed that corner and you were talking about getting it spayed out could you get it deep rip to break up the ground to help stop it getting boggy . I would spray out those paddocks you where not sure about to kill off weeds in them and direct drill them . A bit like your cows do point going through summer with a paddock not fully producing grass
Empty tomato sauce bottle with granules in it on the motor bike works a treat
When my cow gets a nursing ring she keeps it for her lifetime.
Fair enough 👍
Woo getting so close to 20k subs mate, feels like it was barely 12k not that long back
im on high input fresian dairy farm in manawatu so we always have slow milking cows so we put a small river rock in middle of cups or put front cups on back -back on front to add weight/pressure
Are your parents sister and brother
Weighting cows is old school, when my parents brought my grandfather’s herd 35 years ago they culled all cows that used weights now we don’t have slow cow 👌
kiwi ji 13 what you on about
@@haydensmith2395 cows get used to how you milk them, keep putting weights on they keep being slow. Remove the weights and cull a couple slow cows and you will find they milk out faster. That’s why it’s called waiting
@@FamilyFarmingandFun Well said
What I have noticed about your farm is very little fly cover. Your cattle are free of them. Amazing. In Australia they seem to be literally everywhere. US cattle always covered in them. Yours seem squeaking clean without a bit of them. Incredible. I know New Zealand has the pesky buggers, just impressive is all.
Nice video!
Sad to get rid of a cow but that's milking cows. That missed heifer looked good didnt she come back into heat to be bred later? Have a great day
Could do but she’d be a whole year away, so don’t really want to keep her that long 👍
مقطع مثير وممتع ومتميز ورائع جدا وجميل جدا
I think ill steal your double handle bungie idea for barricades when setting up Am Pm Pdk
It works mint I reckon 👌
Also pasture spraying would help with the weeds
Yep certainly would, definitely a goal for next autumn/winter
@@TheOnceADayFarmer not sure why but my comment has been deleted 3 times. Plants are cheap, look up benlee nursery we got 400 plants for around $1200. And you already have the fencing materials down there so there’s no cost there. Will look great planted👍
Hey Andrew how is Nell we just finished caving🎉
She’s good! She’s going to make an appearance on a video soon 👍
That’s awesome! You beat me 😂
Hey Andrew when you were showing us the drain is that your back boundary on other side of the drain. Got to love the old international tractor on the feed wagon. Thanks for the video. How is the new addition to the family going ?
Yes that is our boundary, that paddock was one corner of the farm 👍
Taylas doing really well thanks, she’s sleeping through the night which makes it a lot easier on us 🤞
Great overview of the farm today thanks.
How old is your oldest herd member and what's average milking life of this breed ?
Oo im not 💯 but probably around the 11 or 12 year old mark.
I don’t know the average but could be around the 6-7 year old mark maybe at a guess.
love the vids
Did you ever consider getting ACRs in the milking parlour?
Don't understand why you can't spray your field completely and plant corn in it. That is the way no-till corn is done in America. I would be concerned in the strip till corn that the grass left would compete with the corn.
I think he will spray it all out when he plants it. I think he said
wishing we had 1 cow left to calve, but sadly not
as always a fantastic video
You will do at some point 😅 thanks 🙏
How many cow's do you have bro ??
What a shame about that heifer, are you not even a little tempted to keep her and see how she does for you? On the other hand, tasty beef 🍽
Cattle love licking macinery, and leaving it all sticky 😝
Not really because I’d have to keep her another whole year so is a bit costly unfortunately 😅
@@TheOnceADayFarmer it really is a pity she was empty. But as I said the cloud and all, extra burgers 😜
Always get a couple but yep extra meat 👌
I am interested in the purchase of cow&open Young heifers can you guide
You didn't think about making silage with your new maze ground?
Nah, don’t have enough grass at the moment
Use granels on your weeds
How come? As opposed to chipping?
Yep, scotchies, nodders, and winged thistles and various other weeds can be taken care of with a thistle hoe, I have even had success with Californian thistles with a thistle hoe, I would do them when it looked like it was going to rain making sure there was hollow stem for the rain to get into and the water would rot the roots in the ground that are all over the place. If you put stock onto the thistles that you have grubbed straight away its one of the first things they munch up as the prickles go soft in the initial wilting stage as they must taste nice at that stage, haven't eaten one myself lol
Is cow 297 a pet ? 🥰
We brought her when she was a heifer and she’s just always been friendly, she may have been a pet club calf 🤷
Im not sure if you said it or not in your video, but i was wondering what is the point of stip spraying?
I think Andrew said it is so they can continue to get feed from it while the field is prepped for cropping, rather than a blanket spray out and lose the grazing.
It's also to stop the rain damaging the soil structure and crop as it can if heavy when the whole field is cultivated. The grass strips hold it all together.
Yep check out the video before this and I explain it 👍
@@S_Eglington So would andrew then come and spray the other strips after the first lot of stips had regrown?
@@danielwhite9025 He's going to plant into the first lot of sprayed out strips. How he's going to control the grass after that I'm fascinated to see.
What's the purpose of strip spraying.
For maize, you’ll see soon 👍
