- Imagination is a powerful thing. It can transport us anywhere, especially when real life is less than ideal. For D23 Member Paul Bottos, the world of Mickey Mouse helped him through some tough times growing up. “I came from a very dysfunctional family,” explains Paul, “[and] from the young age of 11, I was placed in many foster or ‘group’ homes until I was 18 years old. I think I went to 24 different schools before I was in Grade 9.”
When the opportunity to move out on his own presented itself, Paul took on the challenge-but he wasn’t without support, even if it came from a beloved animated character. “I was always fascinated with Mickey, ever since I was a young boy,” Paul says. “When I was in my 20s, I started going out to garage sales and antique shows… [one time,] I saw a little plastic Mickey Mouse, and it reminded me of my childhood… memories of the good stuff children think about when things go bad.” The memories were so powerful that be began to collect all things Mickey-and now, 30 years later, he’s amassed a large (and very impressive) collection! He calls the room where he keeps all his treasures his very own Walt Disney World: “If I lived closer to one of the Disney theme parks, I would be there every day too,” he admits.
Paul’s Mickey Mouse collection has brought joy to his life, and given him hope for a brighter future despite his difficult past. “It just makes me feel good inside and I try and share it with all,” Paul says. And to think it all started with a mouse…

This really made me emotional just watching it. I feel this guy so much. Anytime I go to Disneyland I can feel myself getting tears up because Walt Disney’s work really bring me joy. And it just feels like you’re walking into a piece of history. I’d love to visit where he went one day. And I’d love to see this guys collection and meet him because he seems to be one of the most genuine people in this world.

What a great role model Paul is, especially for the young men who sometimes need permission to feel their emotions. I'm a collector myself and didn't grow up with a dad, often I find myself looking for content in this digital age that will teach me the skills that I missed out on. It's validating to know that strong men cry and laugh and are passionate about their interests/hobbies. Too often we forget to teach our sons these things - thank you, Paul for providing that positive archetype for us.

I just recently started to get into Mickey Mouse im 25 and i found out that the Disney company was founded on the same day as my birthday and then i watched an 11 hour documentary about Disney and it made me a fan
I happen to also collect MIckey but haven't got that many items. I have slowed down recently.

As a a child I had a Mickey Mouse playing tennis watch , The hour hand was his arm The minute hand was a tennis racket and the seconds was a tennis ball that seemed to be driven from the outside of the dial. I’m trying to locate the same style watch as a memory. Would be around 1978 ish
