Gundula Janowitz is my favorite Soprano. Her voice is heavenly. Her 4 last songs, Die walküre, Beethoven 9 mov 4, le nozze di figaro, die fledermaus, cosi fan tutti, are some of the recordings that I so wholeheartedly cherish.
This piece, sung by Gundula Janowitz is the non-plus-ultra! Since many years I own the CD with the rendition of Gundula.....the very best! Love it deeply! Thank you Gundula!
I saw Janowitz in recitaal @ Herkuelesaal in Muenchen - Marien Leben 21 songs (I believe) about the Virgin Mary. Many famed singers were there, presumably to see heer fall on her face, when complete they all jumed to their feet to cheer her. It was a magical hight. I adore her.

Thanks for posting. I agree that Gundula's never been bettered and the voice is heavenly to say the least. She has a unique way of singiing, apparently so effortlessly with breathing so unnoticeable, which can't be said for many other great singers. Here she displays peace, perfect peace !
This is absolutely lovely. Janowitz the great,Her 4 last songs of Strauss is magic & should be in everyones collection. How considerate Karajan looks towards Gundula, fitting in with her timing, I suppose I could say that in the other order.Magic anyway. Many thanks.
wow, except for the lovely pianissimo at the 5 minute mark.... I don't love her voice! It's just my opinion, but her voice is too thin and a bit metallic for my liking - but that's what makes the musical world go around!

Karajan had several favorites at different periods: Leontyne Price earlier, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Barbara Hendricks, and Kathleen Battle after this…

Could someone describe the quality of her voice? It's very bright...almost metallic...lots of high overtones. Like a violin E string.
She used to be called a tea kettle😂 I love her voice, the timbre is very bright and she has fast vibrato.
